DRI Pune seizes hydroponic weed worth ₹10.3 crore, three arrested
PUNE The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Pune unit, intercepted two passengers arriving from Bangkok at Pune Airport on May 12, and seized a significant 9.864 kg of narcotics, said officials.
Acting on specific intelligence, DRI officers examined the checked-in baggage of the passengers and recovered 11 airtight pouches containing a greenish, lumpy substance suspected to be hydroponic weed. Field testing confirmed the presence of narcotic substances.
In a coordinated follow-up operation in Mumbai, DRI officials apprehended one of the suspected receivers or distributors of the consignment. A search at his premises led to the additional recovery of 478 grams of narcotics, including hashish and hydroponic weed.
In total, 10.3 kg of narcotic substances with an estimated illicit market value of ₹10.3 crore were seized.
All three individuals involved — the two passengers and the Mumbai-based distributor — have been arrested under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.

Pocso case: Proceedings against Indian Institute of Science assistant prof to continue
Bengaluru: The high court has refused to quash legal proceedings against an assistant professor at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, who is facing trial under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (Pocso) Act. The case stems from an incident on Sept 30, 2018, during a birthday party of the accused's daughter. It is alleged that during a 'Ghost House' game held in a dark room, the professor inappropriately touched a 10-year-old girl who was among the guests. Following a complaint from the child's father, Jalahalli police filed a chargesheet against him. The accused has denied the allegations, claiming that he merely stepped in to control the children's play. He argued that the complaint was lodged to harass him and cited several procedural flaws in the investigation. These included the similarity of witness statements, alleged irregularities in the court's cognisance of the case, the absence of a medical examination of the child, and inordinate delays in the trial process. However, the additional state public prosecutor countered that around eight children had come forward with similar accounts of inappropriate conduct by the accused, underscoring the need for a full trial. A fter reviewing the case materials, Justice M Nagaprasanna acknowledged the uniformity in the witness statements recorded under Section 164 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Yet, he held that even a single credible account is sufficient to warrant a trial under the Pocso Act. He also stated that the lack of medical examination does not invalidate the prosecution's case if other substantial evidence is available. The court underlined that Sections 7 and 8 of the Act define sexual assault as involving inappropriate touching of a child's private parts. It concluded that, if proven, the allegations against the accused would fall squarely within these legal provisions. The court added that the consistency in witness statements is an issue to be addressed during the trial, not a valid reason for dismissing the case at the pre-trial stage. Given that the matter has been pending since 2018, the high court directed the trial court to expedite the case and complete proceedings within three months.

Drug cartel kingpin deported from Malaysia in custody of Navi Mumbai police, one aide held from Nerul
NAVI MUMBAI: The Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC) unit of the Navi Mumbai crime branch took custody of the drug cartel kingpin, Navi Chichkar, who was arrested in May by the Mumbai Narcotics Control Bureau in the Rs 1,000 crore drug seizure case. ANC team also took custody of Chickar's aide identified as Prabhat Pandey (30). Chichkar was deported from Malaysia after a red-corner notice was issued against him. The custody of Chichkar' and Pandey was taken by the Navi Mumbai ANC in connection with the seizure of 17.2 grams of hydro ganja worth Rs 2.80 lakh on April 14. This followed a raid conducted on a tip-off about a drug deal being carried out in a terrace flat in Sector-15, Nerul. The flat owner, Ashish Gaware (22), and Ahmed Aulagi (23) were arrested, but their associate, Akash Maurya, escaped and is still untraceable. Sandeep Nigade, senior inspector of the ANC, said, "The alleged drug kingpin, Navin Chichkar and his aide Pandey were produced before the Belapur JMFC court and remanded in police custody untill June 16. Till date, 18 accused have been arrested in the drugs cartel operated by kingpin Navin Chichkar and 14 more accused are wanted." After a fortnight of the drug seizure, the Navi Mumbai crime branch team arrested a former national hockey player, a customs superintendent, a clearing agent, two police constables, and two angadias in connection with the April 14 hydro ganja bust by the Navi Mumbai Crime Branch's Anti-Narcotics Cell (ANC). The alleged kingpin of this drug cartel was Naveen Chichkar, the elder son of builder Gurunath Chichkar, who shot himself in the head at his Belapur office on April 25. Chichkar's police custody was obtained for further interrogation, informed a crime branch officer. Builder Gurunath Chichkar left behind a note in which he alleged being 'harassed' by cops who repeatedly summoned him for inquiry into the drug cases filed against his sons, Naveen and Dhiraj. After the April 14 drug bust in Nerul, during interrogation, the arrested duo, Gaware and Aulagi, revealed the names of former hockey player Sujit Bangera and Sahil Lambe (27), both Nerul residents, who allegedly smuggled the hydro ganja from Thailand to Mumbai via flights. At Mumbai airport, the contraband was cleared by customs clearing agent Kamal Chandwani (56) and customs superintendent Prashant Gaur (40), both Kharghar residents, who were also arrested. During the investigation, the police found that Kharghar police constable Sandeep Bhalerao (40) was communicating with Chandwani for the past six months, and ANC unit constable Sanjay Phulkar (36) was in touch with Bhalerao since the cartel bust. Hence, the two cops were also arrested. Further investigation showed that the cash obtained by Bangera and Chandwani from the sale of hydro ganja was routed to Thailand through two Vashi-based angadias, Ankit Patel and Rinkunkumar Patel, who converted it into cryptocurrency, and hence they too were arrested.

Goon Spent Year in Jail, Builds Body in Barrack, Returns Posing Bigger Threat

Nabbed by Nagpur police, the court had convicted him to undergo term at Nashik Central Jail. But things seemingly went haywire, and Gaikwad used the opportunity to focus on his body and gain strength. Back in Nagpur after his release a year ago took many, including the police, by surprise. Gaikwad was a different person altogether — not that he had reformed — but he returned with spitefulness with his chiseled bodybuilder's body, and his cold-viciousness only to go back to return where he had left his criminal past behind, albeit with more vengeance. With his new muscular avatar, he once again unleashed his reign of terror. Gaikwad returned augured a bigger threat to the police at Kaikade Nagar where he would brandish his muscular body and turn violent at the slightest provocation. He kept the cops on their toes with his criminal activities, which included assault, snatching cash at knifepoint, extorting traders, threatening those who crossed him, and other offences. Gaikwad would demand free goods from shopkeepers at knifepoint. Residents were left desperately seeking police intervention. He was slapped with MPDA once again and sent back to prison for the second time on Tuesday. He is currently lodged in Nagpur Central Jail. Gaikwad's physical transition happened gradually during his stint in Nashik Central Jail in 2023 where focused on diet and building muscles. "Gaikwad was uncontrollable. It seemed either he would murder someone or get murdered by rivals or even by the enraged public," senior inspector Mukund Kawade said. Gaikwad already had around 17 offences registered against him under various sections. "Earlier, though he had several offences, Gaikwad was meek before his first MPDA detention in 2023. Somehow, he built his body in prison and returned stronger and more desperate, posing a greater threat," said the senior PI. Kawade stated that a strategy was formulated under the supervision of Zonal DCP Rashmitha Rao to curb Gaikwad's activities. ACP Narendra Hiware assisted in the legal process. "We registered an offence of assault as soon as a complainant approached us. Gradually, we registered more cases, which unsettled his confidence. In the meantime, we prepared strong legal records and evidence to back yet another MPDA proposal," said Kawade. "Our proposal for a fresh MPDA action against him was finalized with the help of the modus operandi branch. CP Ravinder Singal approved the proposal, which paved the way for his swift arrest. He is currently lodged in Nagpur Central Jail but will be shifted to other prisons in the state," Kawade added.
