Tesla's new sales boss comes from IT, not the showroom
Raj Jegannathan, a senior executive with a wide purview including several IT and data functions, recently took over the sales role, said the people familiar with the matter. Some inside Tesla have interpreted this to mean Jegannathan has assumed the role of Troy Jones, Tesla's top sales executive in North America until he departed earlier this month after 15 years with the company, said the people.
Jegannathan, who has recently grown closer to CEO Elon Musk, has no traditional sales experience, according to two people familiar with the matter and his LinkedIn profile. Reuters could not determine if it is an interim role.
Demand for Tesla's cars in Europe and North America has dropped sharply. Last quarter its quarterly sales plunged 13% to the weakest in nearly three years due to a backlash against Musk's politics, Tesla's aging vehicle lineup and increased competition from rivals offering more affordable alternatives.
Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Tesla's share price, which has fallen 18% so far this year, rose 3% on Friday.
Jones, the latest in a string of high-level departures, managed the fallout as Musk's political affiliation with US President Trump prompted left-leaning consumers to shun Tesla. As Tesla's sales were dropping earlier this year, Jones implored managers to work on selling and pushed back against concerns over political headwinds related to Musk, according to a person who heard the comment.
Other key figures who recently left include Musk's confidant Omead Afshar, who was in charge of sales and manufacturing operations in North America and Europe. Jegannathan's expanded role has been interpreted as taking over Afshar's responsibilities too, some of the people said.
Milan Kovac, head of Tesla's Optimus humanoid robot team, announced he was leaving in June. Other recent departures include top battery executive Vineet Mehta and software chief David Lau. Last year, Tesla faced a wave of high-level departures, including chief battery engineer Drew Baglino and global public policy head Rohan Patel.
Jegannathan has spent 13 years at Tesla in technology roles. He joined in 2012 as a senior staff engineer with responsibilities for internet traffic and cloud security, according to his LinkedIn page. More recently he has helped develop Tesla's data centre effort in Texas, two people familiar with the matter said.
His duties have expanded rapidly. Earlier this year, he became a vice president for IT/AI infrastructure, apps and information security, according to his LinkedIn page. In recent months he has taken over Tesla's vehicle-service operations, according to a person familiar with the matter and Jegannathan's comments on X.
Jegannathan was among the Tesla employees seconded to Twitter after Musk's takeover of the company in 2022, according to a person familiar with the matter and a media report.

Environmental concerns arise as Shell gains approval for oil drilling

However, environmental activists have decried the decision to grant the company an Environmental Authorisation to drill, saying the promise of development was nothing new while environmental destruction, the hardships of communities and towns becoming ghost towns when mining activities end are lived experiences. 'One of our key concerns is the reliance on the Saldanha Bay oil spill response 'stack,' which is designed for shallow water incidents and may not be appropriate or effective at ultra-deep levels. If something goes wrong at these depths, the consequences could be catastrophic and irreversible. Fish may migrate away or become unsafe to consume, leaving small-scale fishers without catch and income. In addition, the chemical impact of oil can kill off plankton – the foundation of the marine food chain – with widespread implications for ocean health,' said the organisation. The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment said their Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMRE) counterparts were the competent authority to grant the green light for Shell. DFFE spokesperson, Peter Mbelengwa, could not respond to further questions on concerns over the impact of oil spills and pollution on marine life and livelihoods, as well as community consultation. Trump's Golden Dome looks for alternatives to Musk's SpaceX
The shift marks a strategic pivot away from reliance on Musk's SpaceX, whose Starlink and Starshield satellite networks have become central to U.S. military communications. It comes amid a deteriorating relationship between Trump and Musk, which culminated in a public falling-out on June 5. Even before the spat, officials at the Pentagon and White House had begun exploring alternatives to SpaceX, wary of over-reliance on a single partner for huge portions of the ambitious, $175 billion space-based defense shield, two of the sources said. Musk and SpaceX did not respond to requests for comment. After Reuters reported initially that SpaceX was a frontrunner to build parts of Golden Dome, Musk said on X that the company had 'not tried to bid for any contract in this regard. Our strong preference would be to stay focused on taking humanity to Mars.' Due to its size, track record of launching more than 9,000 of its own Starlink satellites, and experience in government procurement, SpaceX still has the inside track to assist with major portions of the Golden Dome, especially launch contracts, sources say. Project Kuiper, which has launched just 78 of a planned constellation of 3,000 low-earth orbit satellites, has been approached by the Pentagon to join the effort, signaling the administration's openness to integrating commercial tech firms into national defense infrastructure and going beyond traditional defense players. Jeff Bezos, Amazon's executive chairman, told Reuters in January that Kuiper would be 'primarily commercial,' but acknowledged 'there will be defense uses for these [low-earth orbit] constellations, no doubt.' A spokesperson for Project Kuiper declined to comment for this story. The Pentagon declined to comment. The White House did not respond to requests for comment. Golden Dome's ambitions mirror those of Israel's Iron Dome – a homeland missile defense shield – but a larger, more complex layered defense system requires a vast network of orbiting satellites covering more territory. In the search for more vendors for the satellite layers of Golden Dome, 'Kuiper is a big one,' a U.S. official said. While SpaceX remains a frontrunner due to its unmatched launch capabilities, its share of the program could shrink, two of the people said. Officials have reached out to new entrants like rocket companies Stoke Space and Rocket Lab RKLB.O are gaining traction and will be able to bid on individual launches as the program matures, according to the U.S. official. Later in the development of Golden Dome 'each individual launch is going to get bid, and we have to actually give bids to other people,' besides SpaceX, the official said. NEED FOR SATELLITES There is an urgent need for more satellite production. Last year Congress gave Space Force a $13 billion mandate – up from $900 million – to buy satellite-based communication services in what was widely seen as one of many efforts to stimulate private sector satellite production. Amazon's Project Kuiper, a $10 billion initiative led by former Starlink managers dismissed by Musk for slow progress, Reuters has reported, has lagged behind SpaceX in deployment. But its potential defense applications – such as communications that could aid missile tracking – have drawn renewed interest as the administration prepares to allocate the first $25 billion tranche of funding authorized under Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill. Traditional defense giants Northrop Grumman NOC.N, Lockheed Martin LMT.N, and L3Harris LHX.N are also in talks to support Golden Dome. L3Harris CFO Kenneth Bedingfield told Reuters in an interview the company has seen a surge in interest in its missile warning and tracking technologies, which are expected to play a key role in the system. Northrop, meanwhile, is pursuing several efforts including a space-based interceptor, a component that would enable missile strikes from orbit, Robert Flemming, the head of the company's space business, told Reuters in an interview. 'Lockheed Martin is ready to support Golden Dome for America as a proven mission partner,' Robert Lightfoot, president of Lockheed Martin Space, said in a statement. Golden Dome's initial outreach this spring invited smaller, newer Silicon Valley firms seen as nimbler, more sophisticated and potentially less expensive alternatives to the big defense firms to the table – but that was before the Musk-Trump feud upended that calculus. Several with close ties to Trump aside from SpaceX, including Palantir PLTR.O and Anduril – were considered early frontrunners to win big pieces of the $175 billion project. But the Musk-Trump feud has reshaped the competitive landscape. Musk recently launched the 'America Party,' a tech-centric, centrist political movement aimed at defeating Republicans who backed Trump's tax-and-spend agenda. RAPID TIMEFRAME Trump launched the Golden Dome initiative just a week into his second term, pushing for rapid deployment. Space Force General Michael Guetlein, confirmed by the Senate on July 17, is set to lead the program with sweeping authority. Under a previously unreported directive from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Guetlein has 30 days from confirmation to build a team, 60 days to deliver an initial system design, and 120 days to present a full implementation plan, including satellite and ground station details, two people briefed on the memo said. The inclusion of commercial platforms like Kuiper raises security concerns. Its satellites would need to be hardened against cyberattacks and electronic warfare, a challenge that has plagued even SpaceX's Starlink network. In May 2024, Elon Musk said SpaceX was spending 'significant resources combating Russian jamming efforts. This is a tough problem.' Beyond the technical and political challenges, Golden Dome could reshape global security dynamics. A fully operational space-based missile shield may prompt adversaries to develop new offensive capabilities or accelerate the militarization of space.

Musk's X says it won't cooperate with ‘politically motivated' French probe
Elon Musk's social media platform X on Monday accused French prosecutors of launching a "politically-motivated criminal investigation" that threatens its users' free speech, denying all allegations and saying it would not comply with the probe. Earlier this month, Paris prosecutors stepped up a preliminary probe into X for suspected algorithmic bias and fraudulent data extraction, enlisting police to investigate alleged wrongdoing by the company or its executives. 'Based on what we know so far, X believes that this investigation is distorting French law in order to serve a political agenda and, ultimately, restrict free speech,' the social network posted on its Global Government Affairs account. 'For these reasons, X has not acceded to the French authorities' demands, as we have a legal right to do.' In the blistering attack, X also said the probe had been instigated by Eric Bothorel, a French lawmaker, who had accused 'X of manipulating its algorithm for 'foreign interference' purposes, an allegation which is completely false'. The Paris prosecutors' office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Neither did Bothorel. Musk, a former ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, has accused European governments of attacking free speech and has voiced support for some of the region's far-right parties. The French probe could deepen a rift between Washington and European capitals over what sort of discourse is permitted online, with senior officials from Trump's administration alleging the censoring of right-wing voices around the world. PREVIOUS RESEARCH X said Paris prosecutors had requested it hand over 'recommendation algorithm and real-time data about all user posts on the platform', for analysis by researchers David Chavalarias and Maziyar Panahi, who it said had both exhibited 'open hostility towards X', calling into question the impartiality of the investigation. Panahi denied any involvement in the investigation. 'My name was mentioned by mistake, based on my previous research projects with David Chavalarias, none of which have ever had any hostile intent toward X,' he said in an email. 'The fact my name has been mentioned in such an erroneous manner demonstrates how little regard they have for the lives of others … I will not hesitate to pursue legal action for defamation should I receive any form of hate speech.' Chavalarias did not immediately respond to a request for comment. X also chafed at the fact that it was being investigated under organised crime charges, which it said would grant the police measures including wiretapping its employees' personal devices. Pavel Durov, the Russian-born founder of the Telegram messaging app, is also under judicial supervision in France after being arrested last year and placed under formal investigation for alleged organised crime on the app. He denies guilt. Early in July, Musk responded 'true' to a post on X in which Durov said the French 'bureaucrats' investigating X were 'waging a crusade against free speech and tech progress'.
