Great news for petrol prices in South Africa next month
While the petrol price is set to drop, the diesel price will hit South Africa's motorists harder in the pocket should market conditions remain the same for the next week and a half.
Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Wednesday, 23 July. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 decrease of 32 cents Petrol 95 decrease of 28 cents Diesel 0.05% increase of 66 cents Diesel 0.005% increase of 64 cents Illuminating Paraffin increase of 30 cents
If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 32 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of 28 cents for 95 users.
Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 64 and 66 cents per litre increase.
Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to rise by 30 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS:
1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices
2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products

The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 5 August 2025.

Limpopo man arrested for alleged R1.3 million Ford Raptor fraud
The Hawks have arrested a 27-year-old man from Limpopo for allegedly using fraudulent documents to purchase a top-of-the-range Ford Ranger Raptor worth over R1.3 million. The Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit, in collaboration with the Sekhukhune Tracing Team, apprehended the suspect in Groblersdal. Authorities are withholding his name until he appears in court. According to Hawks spokesperson Warrant Officer Lethunya Mmuroa, the suspect submitted a motor vehicle finance application to WesBank in April 2023. 'He allegedly attached a forged bank statement and a fake employer payslip to support the application,' said Mmuroa. WesBank approved the application, and the suspect was contacted by the dealership in Polokwane to collect the vehicle. He arrived at the dealership accompanied by two other men, who are also under investigation. After collecting the vehicle, the suspect failed to meet his monthly payment obligations. WesBank's attempts to reach him were unsuccessful. A forensic audit later revealed that the documentation submitted during the finance application was fraudulent. The bank reported the matter to the Hawks' Serious Commercial Crime Investigation Unit in Polokwane. In January 2024, investigators arrested a man who allegedly helped the suspect obtain and collect the vehicle. 'The investigation confirmed that the 27-year-old suspect worked with others to defraud WesBank and secure the Ford Ranger Raptor,' said Mmuroa. The suspect is expected to appear before the Specialised Commercial Crimes Court in Polokwane on 28 July 2025. Limpopo Hawks provincial head, Major General Gopz Govender, welcomed the arrest and praised the ongoing efforts to combat financial crime. Treasury experts to intervene as Free State municipalities face audit crisis
In a decisive move to address the dire state of municipal governance in the Free State, Provincial Treasury will begin deploying skilled experts to struggling municipalities across the province. Bloemfontein Courant reports that the intervention, announced by Free State MEC of Finance Moses Ketso Makume, comes after growing concerns over poor audit outcomes revealed in the latest Auditor-General's report. Speaking during the first day of the oversight visit by the Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs last Thursday, Makume said the deployment of internal experts is intended to strengthen financial and administrative governance where it is most needed. 'We are obviously concerned by the Auditor-General's report, but it is also an opportunity to improve governance in our municipalities so that they can do what is expected of them – provide services to the people,' said Makume. Not a single municipality in the Free State received a clean audit in the most recent reporting cycle. One of the most troubled municipalities, Nala Local Municipality was singled out for its instability after operating with two CFOs and two speakers simultaneously. This administrative chaos led to community unrest and recurring service delivery protests. In response, Amos Goliath has since been appointed as an administrator to stabilise the institution. Makume emphasised that relying on costly external consultants had failed to produce results, with no municipality achieving a clean audit despite the financial investment. 'We are going to make use of internal capacity to assist our municipalities and lift them out of this rot. This approach will empower local administrations and help save money,' he said.
