Norwich City release FOURTEEN players including Euro 2024 star following Jack Wilshere manager announcement

The Sun13-05-2025

NORWICH CITY have brutally wielded the axe following the end of the Championship season, releasing a whopping 14 players.
The Canaries have even let a star of last summer's European Championships depart.
The Carrow Road cull comes just days after interim manager Jack Wilshere was ruled out of the running to become the next permanent boss.
The ex- Arsenal and England midfielder stepped up from his role as first-team coach in April to take charge following the sacking of Johannes Hoff Thorup.
Norwich finished a disappointing 13th in the Championship and their list of freed players includes three senior stars.
That's goalkeeper Angus Gunn, long-serving Cuban winger Oriel Hernandez and Danish midfielder Jacob Sorensen.
Norwich-born Gunn, 29, played for England Under-21s but switched allegiance to Scotland and started all their three Euro 2024 games.
A club statement read: "As previously announced, first-team players Angus Gunn, Jacob Sorensen and Oriel Hernandez will leave the club at the end of their contracts this summer.
"Archie Mair and Jonathan Tomkinson will also depart the club upon expiry of their contracts, while Callum Doyle will return to parent club Manchester City following his season-long loan spell at Carrow Road.
"Discussions remain ongoing with Aston Villa and Lewis Dobbin over a potential extension to his loan deal.

"Discussions are also ongoing with Manchester City and Jacob Wright over triggering an option to make the midfielder's move to Carrow Road permanent.
"Caleb Ansen and Ken Aboh both return from their loan spells, while Brad Hills and Emmanuel Adegboyega remain at their loan clubs until the end of their respective campaigns.
"The club have also triggered a one-year extension option in Adegboyega's contract.
"Jonathan Rowe's loan to Marseille will become a permanent deal, following the obligation to buy in the agreement between the two clubs.
"Academy players Lewis Shipley, Tom Finch, Adian Manning, Ellis Craven, Daniel Ogwuru, Alfie Doy, Alex Roberts, Kingston Simbai and Gabriel Keita will also be leaving the club.
"Henry Bullen, Hugo Valencia Gomez and Lloyd Ofori-Manteaw will all sign professional deals with the club on July 1, whilst Harmony Okwumo will sign a contract extension.
"The club would like to thank all departing players for their contribution and wish them well for the future."
Stand-in chief Wilshere oversaw a 0-0 against Middlesbrough and a win over Cardiff City on the final day of the season.
But his brief stint in charge wasn't enough to convince the club's top brass to give him the job on a full-time basis.
Canaries Sporting Director said of Wilshere's departure in an interview with the BBC: "Jack is a fantastic person, he and I have a big history together.
"He's a great coach and will be a fantastic head coach, but that's not going to be here at this particular moment in time.
"Naturally, he's disappointed. He's super-ambitious, and he should be, but for where we are right now and the context, we're focussing externally.
"The emotional part, the romantic part of me would love to make that decision but my job is to not get wrapped up in emotion and to make cool, objective decisions."

Wednesday's briefing: Coote charged and Levy reflects on Postecoglou sacking

Former Premier League referee David Coote was charged over remarks he made about ex-Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp. Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy described sacking Ange Postecoglou as 'emotionally difficult'. Elsewhere, Jobe Bellingham followed in brother Jude's footsteps by making his Borussia Dortmund debut, while Trent Alexander-Arnold previewed a new era at Real Madrid. Former Premier League referee David Coote has been charged by the Football Association over remarks he made about ex-Liverpool head coach Jurgen Klopp. Coote was sacked in December by Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) after a video circulated on social media the previous month of him making derogatory comments about Klopp. One of those remarks referenced Klopp's nationality, and the FA said that constituted an alleged 'aggravated breach' under its rules. In the video, Coote is heard saying it had been 's***' to be fourth official at a Liverpool match in the summer of 2020, describing Klopp as a 'German c***'. He also said Klopp was 'f****** arrogant'. Coote declined to comment when contacted via a spokesperson, while the FA has not shared a date by which he must respond. Dismissing Postecoglou was emotionally difficult – Levy Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy insisted he had no regrets about appointing Ange Postecoglou as he described the decision to sack him as 'emotionally difficult'. Despite guiding Spurs to a first trophy in 17 years by securing Europa League glory, Postecoglou was dismissed earlier this month and then replaced by Thomas Frank. Losing 22 Premier League matches and finishing 17th ultimately cost the Australian his job. 'We were over the moon to win a trophy but we need to compete in all competitions,' said Levy. 'We felt that we needed a change. Emotionally it was difficult but we believe we have made the right decision for the club.' Bellingham makes Dortmund debut Jobe Bellingham made his Borussia Dortmund debut from the bench as his new side scraped a goalless draw in their Club World Cup opener against Fluminense in New Jersey. The England Under-21 international played the final 31 minutes at the MetLife Stadium following last week's big-money switch from Sunderland but could not inspire a breakthrough in a tight Group F encounter. Bellingham, 19, followed in the footsteps of elder brother Jude, who spent three years with Dortmund before moving to Real Madrid in 2023. A crowd of 29,755 were in attendance at the 82,500-capacity MetLife Stadium, where Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel make a fine double save to deny Fluminense a second-half winner. Alexander-Arnold ready for new challenge with Real Trent Alexander-Arnold insisted everyone is 'starting from scratch' as they try to take on board the methods of new Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso. The former Liverpool defender is expected to make his Real debut in Wednesday's Club World Cup clash with Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal. While Alexander-Arnold is still getting to grips with new surroundings and a different language after joining the LaLiga club last week, head coach Alonso has only been in position since the start of the month. 'It's a new coach and a new coaching staff, so in that sense we're all starting from scratch,' he told RM Play. 'We're all trying to learn and absorb all the information and put it into practice as quickly as possible.' What's on today? Manchester City begin their Club World Cup campaign against Moroccan side Wydad Casablanca in Philadelphia, while Alexander-Arnold could be involved when Real Madrid meet Simone Inzaghi's Al Hilal in Miami. England Under-21s will bid to qualify for the knockout stages of the European Championship in their Group B clash with Germany. Premier League fixtures for the 2025-26 season will be announced on Wednesday morning.

Former England striker Toni Duggan welcomes WSL expansion to 14 teams from 2026

A proposal put forward by Nikki Doucet, chief executive of Women's Professional Leagues Limited, was voted through at Monday's WSL Football shareholders meeting. It still requires the approval of the Football Association board but, if it gets the green light, 14 teams will compete in the women's top flight from next year and the 2025-26 WSL campaign will conclude with a relegation/promotion play-off. An update on the structure of #BarclaysWSL and #BarclaysWSL2 for the 2025-26 season 🏆 — Barclays Women's Super League (@BarclaysWSL) June 16, 2025 Duggan told talkSPORT: 'I just love what women's football has done. I was part of it when they scraped it back to eight teams. 'Don't get me wrong, it was difficult to take because a league of eight teams, you were only playing a few games a season. 'We've had to gradually build to get to this stage and I think this is the right time for it, really. 'Over in Spain, if I'm comparing the two, I think Spanish football can learn from the WSL because if I'm being honest, there's too many teams over in Spain and they need to condense it to bring the talent together.' Duggan, who played for Everton, Manchester City – with whom she won the WSL title – Barcelona and Atletico Madrid during a glittering career which also brought 79 senior international caps, announced her retirement at the age of 33 in September last year. However, she admitted her excitement at a development she believes is significant for the women's game in this country. She said: 'Obviously clubs now have to adhere to certain things. They have to have a stadium big enough, they have to be able to have television companies there, they have to have good facilities. Former England striker Toni Duggan announced her retirement last September (Martin Rickett/PA) 'I just think that's important for women's football. It's a given for the men's teams, so that's the direction the women's game has gone in and now we're in a position where we're ready to make it a 14-team league, and I think it's exciting.' If the expansion from a 12-team WSL to 14 gets FA approval, it offers three Women's Championship clubs the chance to gain promotion during the 2025-26 campaign. The top two in the Championship – which will be rebranded as Women's Super League 2 from next season – will go up automatically and the third-placed side will take on the team which finished bottom of the WSL in a play-off.
