PM urges UMS not to expel students involved in rally, says Zambry

The Stara day ago

PETALING JAYA: The Prime Minister has urged that the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UMS) students involved in the recent Gempur Rasuah 2.0 rally not be expelled, says Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir.
"Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said they may have made a mistake but their future and studies are far more important and should be prioritised," the Higher Education Minister said in a Facebook post Tuesday (June 24).
Earlier, UMS vice-chancellor Kasim Mansor had said that 13 students from the university who were identified as having taken part in the rally could face disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion, under the Universities and University Colleges Act 2012. 10A and above SPM students to get matriculation placements: MOE

Published on: Wednesday, June 25, 2025 Published on: Wed, Jun 25, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: For illustrative purposes only. KUALA LUMPUR: All students who obtained 10As and above in last year's Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination and applied for the Matriculation Programme will be offered places, regardless of race or background. The Ministry of Education (MOE) said this was agreed upon at today's Cabinet Ministers' Meeting. "This includes students who obtained 10As and had A- results. This policy is the same as the one announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last year. "This decision is made to ensure all top-performing students in the 2024 SPM examination have the opportunity to further their studies,' it said in a statement today. It added that the existing Bumiputera quota system for the Matriculation Programme remains unaffected. "The MADANI Government will continue to ensure access to education can be enhanced for the benefit of students, who are the country's future assets,' it said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? 10A SPM Students Of Any Race Applying For Matriculation Program Guaranteed Seat: MOE

The Ministry of Education (MOE) today announced a significant policy shift for the Matriculation Programme, guaranteeing a place for all Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 candidates who achieved 10As or higher, including those with A- grades. This guarantee applies irrespective of the student's racial background. The decision, which was confirmed by the Cabinet following a meeting where all ministers unanimously agreed on the proposal, aligns with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's earlier commitment. The Prime Minister had previously emphasized the importance of ensuring all high-achieving students have equitable opportunities for further studies. In a statement, the MOE clarified that while this new guarantee ensures automatic entry for top scorers, the existing Bumiputera quota for the Matriculation Programme will remain intact and unaffected. This means that the addition of these merit-based admissions will not reduce the allocated slots for Bumiputera students. The Matriculation Programme serves as a pre-university pathway, primarily for Bumiputera students, to qualify for undergraduate studies, particularly in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, at local and international institutions. Historically, the programme has operated with a 90% quota for Bumiputera students and 10% for non-Bumiputera students. The Prime Minister's previous announcement on June 30, 2024, to guarantee spots for 10A and above scorers was seen as a move towards greater meritocracy, while the latest clarification confirms the inclusion of A- grades in this guaranteed entry. Dissent crucial in democracy, says Anwar after caricature burning

(Bersih Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim believes dissent is crucial in a democratic country and freedom of speech must be upheld, says the Prime Minister's Office (PMO). Speaking during the daily press briefing, senior press secretary Tunku Nashrul Abaidah reiterated Anwar's order to the higher education ministry and Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) not to take action against its students for protesting. Tunku Nashrul said the incident was a reminder of the people's hope for the government to completely eliminate corruption. 'As the prime minister himself was part of a student movement, and once led a movement for reform on the streets, he understands that criticism, no matter how much it stings, is an important part of democracy. 'The future of our youth should not be jeopardised due to differences of opinion,' he said. Earlier, higher education minister Zambry Abdul Kadir said Anwar had urged UMS not to expel the students involved in burning a caricature of the prime minister during an anti-corruption rally in Kota Kinabalu last Saturday. The Gempur Rasuah Sabah 2.0 protest saw more than 100 people call for action to be taken over the Sabah water department scandal. Organised by several UMS students, the rally ended with the burning of a caricature of Anwar. Police are investigating the burning of the caricature under the Sedition Act 1948 and Penal Code.
