BJP MP seeks action against Prada for Kolhapuri Chappal GI tag violation

India Today10 hours ago

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Dhananjay Mahadik has written to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, urging him to protect the Geographical Indication (GI) tag of Kolhapuri chappals after Italian fashion brand Prada showcased the traditional footwear without attribution. The controversy erupted after Prada presented Kolhapuri-style sandals in its Men's Spring Collection at Milan Fashion Week, pricing them at Rs 1.2 lakh without acknowledging the chappals' Indian origin, artisans, or cultural significance. Mahadik alleged this act violated the Artisan Act and disregarded India's GI regulations.advertisementKolhapuri chappals earned a GI tag from the Government of India in 2019, and have their roots in the 12th century. They are traditionally handcrafted by cobbler communities in Maharashtra and Karnataka. Mahadik said that Prada's move not only infringes on intellectual property rights but also threatens the livelihood and dignity of thousands of artisans.
Calling it a direct breach of GI norms, Mahadik appealed to the state government to raise the issue at the international level and with the Centre. His son, Krishnaraj Mahadik, along with community leaders, personally handed over the letter to Chief Minister Fadnavis.Mahadik further stressed the need for immediate awareness campaigns and legal steps to safeguard the identity and heritage of Kolhapuri chappals.- EndsTrending Reel

Delhi CM flags off 105 new DEVI e-buses, inaugurates Narela depot

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Friday flagged off 105 new orange-coloured DEVI (Delhi EV Inter-connector) electric buses and inaugurated the newly built Sector A9 depot in Narela, calling it a step towards cleaner and more efficient public transport for the capital. Gupta said the depot was completed in just 90 days and claimed it reflects the BJP government 's commitment to deliver on promises made to Delhi residents. She also attacked the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, accusing it of pushing Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) into losses and fostering a corrupt system. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist Reveals: The Simple Morning Habit for a Flatter Belly After 50! Lulutox Undo "Buses are Delhi's lifeline. But under the previous government, routes were cut, buses reduced, and corruption seeped in," she said. Referring to the CAG report, Gupta claimed that DTC had incurred losses amounting to Rs 65,000 crore during the earlier regime. She alleged that even the free bus ride scheme for women was marred by corruption and panic buttons were installed "just for show". Live Events Highlighting features of the new nine-metre-long electric buses, Gupta said they are equipped with air conditioning, panic buttons, and real-time monitoring systems. "When we removed paper tickets and moved to cards, AAP spread lies that women would no longer travel for free. But the move was only to curb corruption," she said. Meanwhile, Delhi Transport Minister Pankaj Singh, who was present at the event, said the previous government denied people their right to better buses. "These buses should have arrived by last monsoon, but the former government failed to deliver. Today, the BJP is fulfilling that promise," he said. He said that earlier DEVI buses were green in colour, and this is the first time an entire fleet of orange-coloured buses has been introduced. This adds more vibrancy, and we will continue increasing their numbers, as we have been doing since the launch of the DEVI buses. Delhi BJP leader Yogender Chandolia dismissed AAP's claim that this was just a rebranding exercise. "If these were AAP's buses, they would have been on the roads months ago. These are new buses, purchased and brought in under the BJP. AAP never procured small electric buses - they reused old ones," he said. Chandolia said the new compact DEVI buses, with seating for 23 and standing space for 17 passengers, are ideal for navigating Delhi's narrow lanes and will benefit people. "This is the real Rekha Gupta Model - clean, modern, and efficient public transport," he added. Currently, Delhi operates around 2,000 electric buses, and officials said the number will continue to rise, with a goal of achieving 100 per cent electrification of the bus fleet by 2027.

Congress 'appeasement' of illegal immigrants led to massive encroachment of Satra land: Himanta Biswa Sarma

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday (June 27, 2025) alleged that the previous Congress government's appeasement of illegal immigrants led to massive encroachment of more than 13,000 bighas (more than 4,300 acres) of 'Satra' (Vaishnavite monastery) land in the State. He affirmed the Bharatiya Janata Party-led (BJP) ruling dispensation's commitment to reclaim the land for these Vaishnavite monasteries. "The Congress Govt ignored sentiments of the indigenous people while pandering to their illegal immigrant vote bank, which led to 922 Satra lands being encroached upon," Mr. Sarma said in a post on X. He said thousands of bighas of Satra land have been encroached across major centres, including 7,137 bighas (2,355.21 acres) in Barpeta, 2,583.79 bighas (852.66 acres) in Nagaon, 2,757.39 bighas 909.94 acres) in Bajali and 896.76 bighas (295.94 acres) in Lakhimpur. "We are on a mission to reclaim them," the Chief Minister asserted. Mr. Sarma had earlier this month announced that the government will set up a permanent 'Satra Aayog' to look after the welfare of these Vaishnavite monasteries located across the State. At a meeting of the temporary Satra Aayog formed to study the issues of these historic institutions, Mr. Sarma said the permanent body of the Aayog will work to lend sustainability to the Satras. The Aayog, formed on November 24, 2021, with AGP MLA Pradip Hazarika as its chairman and BJP MLAs Mrinal Saikia and Rupak Sarma as its members, visited 126 satras and examined the existing problems there and gave several recommendations in the report.
