Brasilia:
India and Brazil on Tuesday set a target of nearly doubling the bilateral annual trade to USD 20 billion in the next five years and inked six agreements to expand cooperation in a range of sectors including energy and agriculture following talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The two leaders also deliberated on combating terrorism, with Modi saying both sides were clear that there is no place for double standards on terrorism.
"We have a similar thinking on the fight against terrorism -- zero tolerance and zero double standards. We are clear that there is no place for double standards on terrorism," the prime minister said in his media statement.
"We strongly oppose terrorism and those who support terrorism," he added.
The two sides inked six agreements, including a pact on combating international terrorism and transnational organised crime and another on the exchange and mutual protection of classified information. They also signed memorandums of understanding (MoUs) on cooperation in renewable energy, sharing large-scale solutions for digital transformation, intellectual property, and agricultural research.
PM Modi travelled to Brasilia on Monday evening after attending the two-day BRICS summit in this seaside Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro.
"We want India-Brazil relations to be as colourful as carnival, as passionate as football, and as connecting hearts as samba, without long lines at the visa counter! In this spirit," PM Modi said.
"We will make efforts to facilitate people-to-people contacts between the two countries, especially tourists, students, sportspersons and businessmen," he said.
On various geopolitical developments, the prime minister said India-Brazil partnership is an important pillar of stability and balance and that both sides are unanimous that all disputes should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
PM Modi said both sides discussed ways to enhance trade.
"In today's discussions, we talked about strengthening cooperation in every field. We have set a target to take bilateral trade to USD 20 billion in the coming five years," he said.
The current annual bilateral trade is around USD 13 billion.
"Our cooperation in the field of energy is constantly growing. Environment and clean energy are the main priorities of both the countries," the prime minister said.
"The agreement that has been made today to increase cooperation in this area will give new direction and momentum to our green goals.
The prime minister said the growing India-Brazil cooperation in the field of defence is a symbol of "deep mutual trust" between the two sides.
"We will continue our efforts to connect our defence industries." Both sides are also working together on the adoption of UPI (Unified Payments Interface) in Brazil, he said.
"We will be happy to share India's successful experience in areas like digital public infrastructure and space with Brazil." "Our cooperation in artificial intelligence and supercomputers is growing. This is a proof of our common thinking of inclusive development and human-centric innovation," he said.
The prime minister said the two sides are also boosting cooperation in the area of agriculture.
"Now we will also work together on agricultural research and food processing. We are also increasing our win-win cooperation in the field of health. We emphasised on the expansion of Ayurveda and traditional medicine in Brazil," he said.
PM Modi also referred to India-Brazil coordination at the global stage.
"As two large democratic countries, our cooperation is relevant not only for the Global South, but for the entire humanity." "We believe that it is our moral obligation to raise the concerns and priorities of the Global South at global forums," he said.
"Today, when the world is going through a period of tension and uncertainty, my friend explained in great detail," he added.
In a post on 'X', PM Modi described his talks with Lula as "fruitful" and said that the Brazilian president has always been passionate about India-Brazil friendship.

Thailand-Cambodia conflict, India-UK trade pact and more: The week in 5 charts

(1) India and U.K. sign trade pact India and the U.K. signed a significant trade pact, reducing import tariffs, supporting cross-border service sector activity and streamlining social security payments for Indian temporary workers in the U.K. on Thursday (July 24, 2025) last week. The India-U.K. CETA, while reducing tariffs across several tariff lines, has also risked the entry of cheaper processed foods into the country, along with products high in sugar, sodium and fat. With lax labelling and advertising regulations, these products might increase the diabetic and obesity burden of the country if left unregulated. (2) France to recognise State of Palestine French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Thursday (July 24, 2025) that France will recognise Palestine as a state, amid snowballing global anger over people starving in Gaza. State for the stateless: on France and Palestinian statehood Mr. Macron said in a post on X that he will formalize the decision at the United Nations General Assembly in September. 'The urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved.″ The French President offered support for Israel after the Oct. 7, 2023 Hamas attacks and frequently speaks out against antisemitism, but he has grown increasingly frustrated about Israel's war in Gaza, especially in recent months. France is the biggest and most powerful European country to recognise Palestine. More than 140 countries recognise a Palestinian state, including more than a dozen in Europe. France has Europe's largest Jewish population and the largest Muslim population in western Europe, and fighting in the Middle East often spills over into protests or other tensions in France. Thursday's announcement came soon after the U.S. cut short Gaza ceasefire talks in Qatar, saying Hamas wasn't showing good faith. (3) Thailand, Cambodia agree to truce Thai and Cambodian leaders agreed to halt hostilities in their deadliest border conflict in more than a decade, after a push by the US and regional powers for a diplomatic resolution. Thailand's Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet held discussions Monday (July 28, 2025) in Malaysia, hosted by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Anwar facilitated the dialogue in his role as the chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, with Washington and Beijing dispatching envoys. The talks mark the first formal dialogue since fresh clashes erupted on July 24, with at least 36 people killed and more than 150,000 civilians displaced on both sides of their 800-kilometer (500-mile) border. Tensions escalated rapidly over the weekend as heavy artillery fire and aerial strikes were reported, and both sides accused each other of targeting civilian areas. The current conflict traces its roots to long-standing disputes stemming from colonial-era maps and treaties that defined the two countries' boundaries. Relations had remained relatively stable since a 2011 clash that left dozens dead, but renewed tensions have triggered fears of escalated fighting. (4) Seven students killed in Rajasthan after school roof collapses A portion of a government school building collapsed in Rajasthan's Jhalawar district on Friday (July 25, 2025), leaving seven children dead and 28 injured. The school building was old and collapsed as a result of heavy rainfall in the region, Amit Kumar, a local police officer, told Reuters. The part of the Piplod Government School building housing Classes 6 and 7 gave way, burying about 35 children. Angry locals said they had informed the tehsildar and sub-divisional magistrate about the condition of the school building but no action was taken. 'This happened due to negligence of the administration,' Balkishan, a local resident, told reporters. (5) Former Kerala CM and Communist stalwart V.S. Achuthanandan dies at 101 Former Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan passed away in Thiruvananthapuram on Monday (July 21, 2025) due to age-related ailments. He was 101. VS, as he was fondly known, was a symbol of resilience, integrity, and a century-long commitment to the working class in the State. The communist stalwart became a moral compass for the Left movement in India, and his life mirrored the evolution of communist politics in the country. Born in 1923 in the coastal village of Punnapra, Alappuzha, Achuthanandan was shaped by poverty and early loss, forcing him into work by the age of 11. But the hardship only sharpened his resolve. Drawn to the freedom struggle and workers' movements, he joined the Communist Party as a teenager. Over the decades, he became a key organiser of land reforms and trade unions, surviving arrests, underground life, and inner-party rivalries. He was among the founding leaders of the CPI(M) in 1964 after the party split — a decision that shaped Indian Left politics for generations.

Mandi flash flood: Jai Ram Thakur meets PM Modi, seeks concessions in Forest Conservation Act, relief package to resettle displaced families

Himachal Pradesh Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jai Ram Thakur Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged for concessions under the Forest Conservation Act so that displaced families in Mandi, the worst-hit district in the recent flash floods, can be resettled safely on alternative land. The former chief minister also urged PM Modi to provide an area-specific relief package for rehabilitation and reconstruction, and sought to initiate a study to examine the root causes of recurring natural disasters in the state, in a bid to mitigate future losses. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu has also been urging the Centre to relax rules and regulations under the Forest Conservation Act to rehabilitate the displaced families on forest land. The 1980 Act aims to regulate and restrict the de-reservation and use of forest land for non-forest purposes. It mandates prior approval from the central government for any relaxation in the rule. During Monday's meeting, which lasted around an hour, Thakur, who represents the Seraj Assembly constituency in Mandi, briefed PM Modi on the overall devastation caused by recent natural disasters in various parts of Himachal Pradesh. He said the PM took detailed stock of the damage and assured full support for rehabilitation and reconstruction efforts. Thakur said he informed PM Modi that people had not only lost their homes but also their land, leaving them with nowhere to rebuild amid a disaster that caused losses exceeding Rs 1,200 crore across the state. Damages worth over Rs 1,000 crore were reported in Seraj constituency alone, he added. On the night of June 30, 42 lives were lost in Seraj, Karsog, and Nachan following flash floods triggered by the cloudburst in Mandi, with Seraj alone accounting for 29 deaths. Over 500 homes were completely washed away, while another 1,000 houses sustained major damages. Thakur added that heavy damage was also reported in Nachan, Karsog, and Dharampur, where Syathi village was completely razed.
