Colorado pro day: Travis Hunter is a lock as a top-5 pick, but could Shedeur Sanders fall?

New York Times05-04-2025
BOULDER, Colo. — Travis Hunter and Shedeur Sanders, two of the most high-profile stars of the 2025 NFL Draft class, delivered on their promise to put on a show Friday at Colorado's pro day.
Over the next few weeks, teams will work to determine whether there's enough substance to match the flashiness, as both are expected to be selected on April 24 in the first round.

Hunter, the Heisman Trophy-winning wide receiver and cornerback, has been the easier evaluation for NFL teams. Though there isn't a consensus among teams on whether to play him primarily on offense or defense, there's no denying Hunter's talent, athleticism and intangibles. He's viewed along with Penn State linebacker Abdul Carter as one of the two most talented players in the class, and Hunter is a virtual certainty as a top-five pick.

In fact, there's a growing belief around the league that Hunter is the favorite to go to the Cleveland Browns with the No. 2 pick, according to high-ranking executives and coaches. The Browns have been high on Hunter throughout the process, according to sources. And as he went through his route tree Friday during warmups, Browns general manager Andrew Berry watched intently from 10 yards away.
Hunter later caught 15 passes from Sanders during the quarterback's throwing session. Hunter mingled with New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen and Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton after the on-field action concluded.
The Browns sent a heavy contingent to Colorado to meet with both Hunter and Sanders, including a Thursday dinner with the pair. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and head coach Kevin Stefanski were also present for the visit. But the Browns have also hosted Hunter, Sanders and Miami quarterback Cam Ward on official visits in Cleveland, so they're very familiar with the draft's top prospects. Berry also spoke with Colorado coach Deion Sanders on Friday after the pro day.
Shedeur Sanders remains the trickier evaluation. He completed 62 of 67 passes, including three drops, during Friday's workout, and he showed off his strong deep ball at times. His ability to throw an accurate deep ball is one of his greatest attributes, according to league evaluators, and they liked what they saw Friday.

However, there were some wobbly throws on some shorter routes, and his arm strength has been described by league evaluators as good but not great. That will surely be a concern for teams that deal with more wintry conditions later in the season.
Over the past couple of months, Ward has established himself as the clear favorite to be the Tennessee Titans' pick at No. 1. Several teams in the top 10 have prepared for that outcome during in-house mock draft simulations. That didn't stop the Titans from visiting Colorado, though, and their traveling party included president of football operations Chad Brinker and general manager Mike Borgonzi. Both met with Deion Sanders after the workout.

Of course, the Titans could still move the top pick, but that doesn't sound likely at the moment, especially after they declined to get involved with top free agents Sam Darnold and Aaron Rodgers, according to league sources. The Browns and Giants have inquired about the Titans' interest in trading down, according to league sources, but the Titans haven't even determined the level of compensation they'd require to consider such a move.
Judging by the Browns' and Giants' actions — as well as what they've said about refusing to force a QB draft pick in the first round — it's fair to deduce their interest in moving up has been centered around Ward.
But while the league believes the Browns are leaning toward Hunter, it's more of a guessing game with the Giants, whose large contingent in Boulder also included coach Brian Daboll. One top-10 team believed the Giants were pivoting away from a quarterback with their first pick, likely instead eying Carter.
The Giants aren't done with their evaluation, though. They plan to meet with Shedeur Sanders again before the draft, according to league sources.
If the Giants pass on Sanders, there's a fascinating question developing around the league: How far could he fall? The New York Jets could theoretically be in play at No. 7. The New Orleans Saints, who sit at No. 9, have been heavily involved in the quarterback pro days, but they had a scarce presence in Boulder. There are cases to be made for other QB-needy teams outside the top 10, but there aren't any sure things.
And due to the intrigue over the landing spots for both Hunter and Sanders, the spotlight doesn't look likely to dim around the pair of Colorado stars before the draft.

Steelers' Derrick Harmon gets emotional as he's carted off field with injury

The Pittsburgh Steelers may be without their top rookie for the near future. Defensive tackle Derrick Harmon was carted off the field during the Steelers' preseason finale against the Carolina Panthers. Harmon was injured while rushing from the interior. Panthers lineman Brandon Walton blocked him on the play and Harmon ended up on the ground as Carolina quarterback Jack Plummer rolled out to his right. Harmon was later seen on the broadcast reacting to his injury on the back of the cart. He's been ruled out of the rest of tonight's game. Pittsburgh drafted Harmon at No. 21 overall in the first round out of Oregon. One of the top interior defensive line prospects in the class, he is expected to start for the Steelers this season alongside Keeanu Benton and Cameron Heyward. That may change after tonight's injury. This story will be updated with more information when available. Rookie Jaxson Dart gets the start in preseason finale for Giants, and continues to make plays

Jaxson Dart played his final game of this preseason for the New York Giants. The way he has played in the three preseason games, it shouldn't be long before we see him again. The first-round rookie quarterback has been one of the stars of the preseason. He had more highlights on Thursday night, leading a quick touchdown drive to start the game and making other nice throws. That's what he has done all month. Giants coach Brian Daboll has said at every turn that Russell Wilson is the team's starting quarterback, and he seems set on that plan for the opener. But Dart has gone from a player who everyone thought might need to sit half of a season or more to one that should get a chance pretty soon if Wilson struggles at all. There will continue to be speculation if he should just start the season as QB1. He has conjured up memories of the 2012 Seahawks and Wilson winning the job as a rookie with his stellar play in the preseason. Dart got the start as Wilson rested in Thursday's preseason finale against the New England Patriots, and the rookie made plays right away. He scrambled around on his first pass and hit Gunner Olszewski on a short pass. Olszewski turned upfield and gained 50 yards. The drive ended with Dart hitting tight end d for a 7-yard touchdown. Dart was much better than his final numbers would indicate. The Giants dropped five passes that should have been caught, including two by Beaux Collins and two more deep downfield to Jalin Hyatt. All of those passes were on the hands of the intended receiver, as Dart consistently delivered accurate passes. Dart also had a 13-yard pass wiped out due to a holding penalty, and that penalty led to the drive stalling. Dart finally had a bad play late in the first quarter. He scrambled on a fourth down play for the first down, but was hit hard and fumbled, and was taken to the medical tent to be checked for a concussion. The Giants kept possession due to a Patriots penalty on the play, Jameis Winston came on for Dart and on his first play he threw deep. Hyatt held onto that throw for a touchdown. Dart was back on the bench after a quick trip to the medical tent and cleared concussion protocol, but he was done for the night after the big hit. After Dart took that hit, the Amazon Prime broadcast caught a moment in which Daboll told his young quarterback, "Slide." He'll learn. Dart was 6 of 12 for 81 yards and it should have been way better if not for the dropped passes. He was only inaccurate on one pass, into the end zone after Olszewski's big again. Every time Dart has played in the preseason, he has made things happen. He might need some development coming out of an offense at Ole Miss that is much less complicated than a pro offense, but the results with the Giants have been promising. Wilson is a bridge quarterback to whenever the Dart era begins, and at this point in Wilson's career he has a fairly low ceiling. Giants fans aren't going to be patient if Wilson struggles, because they have seen Dart's ability to make plays. Given how good Dart was in August, Giants fans should see him again soon.

Giants' Jaxson Dart clears concussion protocol after taking a hit in preseason game vs. Patriots

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart was evaluated for a head injury and cleared concussion protocol after taking a hit at the end of a long run in the preseason finale against New England on Thursday night. Dart fumbled when he was tackled by linebacker Jack Gibbens to end a 23-yard run late in the first quarter. He grabbed his head after the play, though it was unclear if it was from the hit or a reaction to losing the fumble. Dart was taken to the medical tent on the sideline and replaced by veteran Jameis Winston, who threw a touchdown pass on the next play. Dart exited the tent and went to the bench but did not return for the next offensive possession in the second quarter. It was not clear if Dart's night was done because of injury, precaution or a coaching staff decision to limit the first-round pick's playing time. Game broadcasters said coach Brian Daboll expected Dart to only play a quarter. Dart completed 6 of 12 pases for 81 yards, including a 50-yard gain to Gunner Olszewski and a TD toss to Greg Dulcich. The 22-year-old former Mississippi star had played well enough in exhibition again and impressed in training camp to the point that it looked like the Giants were preparing Dart to be ready to play early this season if starter Russell Wilson faltered. Wilson and most of the first-team offense and defense did not play against the Patriots. ___ AP NFL:
