Comedy icon Adam Sandler has returned to the putting green with the release of Netflix and director Kyle Newacheck's new film, Happy Gilmore 2. Set almost 30 years after the original movie, Happy Gilmore 2 follows the titular character as he comes out of retirement from professional golf to compete for a prize that will help pay for his daughter's (Sunny Sandler) ballet school.
Recommended Videos
Like traditional Adam Sandler movies, Happy Gilmore 2 unleashes a wacky, vulgar comedy extravaganza that aims to entertain. While it certainly isn't pitch perfect, Happy Gilmore 2 presents a decent sequel that puts a new spin on the original film's formula. At the same time, it plays it safe by featuring plenty of comedic callbacks to the first film while bringing back plenty of fan favorite characters, both in the flesh and in spirit.
The more things change, the more they stay the same
Fair warning: this long-awaited film may disappoint in its first few minutes with the sudden death of Julie Bowen's beloved character, Virginia. Audiences today aren't as fond of the films 'fridging' female characters as they were in the '90s. Happy Gilmore has invoked this kind of dark humor many times before with accidental deaths. In this case, Viriginia's death seems a step too far, even with her subsequent appearances in the hero's 'Happy Place.'
Nevertheless, Virginia's shocking death paves the way for a poignant tale of Happy struggling to cope with his resulting guilt and alcoholism and provide for his children as a single father. This harkens back to how Happy cared for his grandmother in the first film. However, the sequel also reverses this dynamic as the middle-aged Happy needs to be cared for as well.
All in all, Happy Gilmore 2 is a story about a grown-ish man coping with change, having seen so many people in his life die. This battle against change can be seen on the golf course, as Manatee threatens the sport Happy loves by starting American Ninja Warrior-style league catered to the new generation.
Wacky characters old and new
After all this time, Sandler proves he hasn't lost his comedic edge with his portrayal of Happy Gilmore. The character's still the same angry man-child he was in the first film. Despite that, Happy displays enough heart and maturity now that he is a middle-aged father.
This movie capitalizes on the nostalgia factor by featuring several returning characters. Shooter McGavin (Christopher MacDonald) proves he's as wicked and hilarious as ever. However, his joining forces with Happy to take down the Maxi league presents an intriguing new dynamic that keeps the story fresh. On the other hand, Hal L. (Ben Stiller) is still up to his under-handed schemes as a support group leader, showing how some things never changes, even after 30 years.
While there are plenty of beloved returning characters, the film delivers plenty of terriffic newcomers. It's clear actor Benny Safdie had a blast portraying the film's heinous and comical new villain, Frank Manatee. Bad Bunny holds up quite well playing Happy's new caddy, Oscar. Though many new characters like Slim Peterson (Lavell Crawford) and Drago Larson try to replicate characters whose actors have passed on, they still bring enough laughs.
Cheap thrills, for better or worse
Happy Gilmore 2 generates some decent laughs with its brand of slapstick comedy and toilet humor. There's more than enough of it to go around in this film, as the protagonist now raises four young Happy Gilmores who moon people and make phallus jokes whenever they can. However, the many scenes of characters receiving golf balls to the crotch and Happy sneaking drinks from hidden flasks can get old fast.
Though Happy is up to his childish antics on the golf course again, the film makes a mature but questionable choice of having him try to control his comedic anger. It all pays off in the movie's over-the-top climax, which shows Happy unleashing the beast as he and his team play on Manatee's extreme golf course.
Is Happy Gilmore 2 worth a watch?
Happy Gilmore 2 is what you'd expect from an Adam Sandler movie, but overall, that's a good thing. The humor in this film is hit-or-miss, with the franchise showing that it has some of its fire after all these years. Fortunately, the movie brings plenty of heart with Happy's cartoonish journey back from the brink with his new family. This sequel is no hole-in-one, and it may not satisfy everyone, but it is still an entertaining sports comedy.
Happy Gilmore 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

Grimm Reboot: Elizabeth Tulloch Offers ‘Exciting' Update on Potential Peacock Series — Would She Return?
It's been seven months since news first broke of a Grimm reboot being developed at Peacock, and we've been practically woging with anticipation ever since. So when TVLine recently connected with original series star Elizabeth Tulloch, we couldn't resist asking for an update, and the woman formerly known as Juliette (or Eve, depending on the day) was happy to oblige. More from TVLine Suzanne Rogers Exiting Days of Our Lives...?! Rep Addresses Wild Rumor Peyton Meyer Exits Days of Our Lives: Did Doug Williams Redeem Himself Before Leaving Salem? Days of Our Lives Snags Two-Season Renewal at Peacock, Keeping It Streaming Through 2028 'I know there's a script being written, and I know that David [Giuntoli] met with them,' Tulloch tells us. 'I don't think they would do a reboot or a spinoff or whatever it's going to be without David's involvement.' Grimm originally aired for six seasons (2011–2017) on NBC, starring Giuntoli as Nick Burkhardt, a detective who descends from a long line of Grimms — aka slayers of fairytale monsters known as Wesen. 'It's pretty exciting,' Tulloch says of the show's still-growing fanbase, which she attributes to the show's multiple streaming homes. 'A lot of people are sort of finding Grimm. We did 123 episodes, and it has like 90% on Rotten Tomatoes still.' As for whether Tulloch would like to reprise one or both of her roles in a potential continuation of Grimm… you'll have to watch the interview: In addition to Giuntoli and Tulloch, Grimm also starred Claire Coffee, Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell, Bree Turner, Reggie Lee, Sasha Roiz and Jacqueline Toboni. The series was created by David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf, who also served as co-showrunners. Both are reportedly involved in Peacock's potential reboot, along with original series producers Lynn Kouf, Hazy Mills Productions and Universal Television. Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva, CSI, The Blacklist) is writing and executive-producing the new series. At the time of the original report, a rep for Peacock told TVLine that it had no additional information to share. Hit PLAY on the video above to watch TVLine's interview with Tulloch, then drop a comment with your dream project below. Are you hoping for a direct continuation in which Nick passes the torch to a new Grimm? Or perhaps you'd rather get a spinoff following specific characters? Yahoo is using AI to generate takeaways from this article. This means the info may not always match what's in the article. Reporting mistakes helps us improve the experience. Generate Key Takeaways Apple TV+ is kicking off the month of August with a slate of new shows that couldn't be more different from each other — and that's part of what makes this month for the platform so exciting. From an epic Hawaiian historical drama starring Jason Momoa to a star-studded K-pop competition series, there's something here for almost any type of viewer. In this post, we're taking a closer look at four of the biggest Apple TV+ series to stream this month. The lineup blends history, comedy, sci-fi, and music, giving subscribers a taste of everything Apple's streaming service does best. It's also a reminder that Apple is quietly building one of the most eclectic libraries in streaming, full of prestige dramas and buzzy originals. And we'll start by taking a look at Momoa's new project, an action-heavy historical drama that should appeal to fans of the actor's previous work on shows like "Game of Thrones." Read more: 6 Apple TV+ Shows That Are So Good, I Wish I Could Enjoy Them For The First Time All Over Again Chief Of War (August 1) "Chief of War" is a retelling of the unification and colonization of Hawaii at the turn of the 18th century, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Momoa plus Luciane Buchanan, Temuera Morrison, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, and Cliff Curtis. The show, co-created by Momoa and Thomas Pa'a Sibbett and based on true events, follows a warrior named Ka'iana (played by Momoa) as he tries to unify the islands before their colonization by outside forces. Momoa and Sibbett both share native Hawaiian heritage; as a result, "Chief of War" is very much "a passion project" for them, in Apple's words. Two episodes are already available to stream on Apple TV+, and the show currently has a 90% critics' score on Rotten Tomatoes — where the critics' consensus summary currently notes that the series is "a brutal epic that recreates Native Hawaiian history with commendable authenticity." According to data from Samba TV, 485,000 U.S. households watched the debut episode during the "L+2D window," meaning either live or within two days after the debut's arrival. Per Samba, "That means 'Chief of War' was one of the more popular Apple TV+ releases this year, outpacing 'The Studio' premiere by 70% and coming within 1% of 'Your Friends & Neighbors" (season one, episode one)." Platonic: Season 2 (August 6) Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne are back in "Platonic," an underrated Apple TV+ comedy that aims to prove friendship in your 40s isn't impossible — but that it's also as messy and hilarious as ever. And that, yes, men and women can be platonic friends with each other. The pair's chemistry remains the soul of the show, as their characters navigate midlife hurdles like work stress, weddings, and relationship chaos. "Platonic" returns for its sophomore season on August 6, dropping the first two episodes before settling into a weekly release, and new guest stars this season include Aidy Bryant, Kyle Mooney, Beck Bennett, and Milo Manheim. I'll have a separate preview of the new season, but for now, "Platonic" is definitely one of Apple's better attempts at a low-stakes but highly enjoyable sitcom. It doesn't make some grand attempt at prestige TV; each episode is just a fun half-hour of TV. Nothing more, nothing less. Invasion: Season 3 (August 22) Here's one for the sci-fi fans out there. Apple's "Invasion" is essentially an alien invasion story where the emphasis is on how humanity reacts to an outside threat, as opposed to the show primarily focusing on that alien threat itself. From Simon Kinberg and David Weil, season three finds the alien threat evolving and the scattered survivors of Earth's first contact with extraterrestrials finally coming together for a hair-raising mission — infiltrating the alien mothership. According to Apple's official summary of the new season, apex aliens have now emerged and are spreading their tendrils across the globe. As a result, this season ramps up the stakes considerably on the latest Apple TV+ sci-fi standout, starring Golshifteh Farahani and Shioli Kutsuna. One of the things that Apple's streamer does better than almost all of its rivals is produce top-tier sci-fi content, and "Invasion" is no exception to that rule. The first episode of the 10-episode Season 3 debuts on August 22, with one episode each week thereafter. KPOPPED (August 29) Finally — in case you couldn't tell by the dominance of everything from the success of Netflix's "KPop Demon Hunters" to the worldwide love for Korean superstars BTS — K-pop is... kind of having a moment. Apple TV+ has already dipped its toe in these waters via its 2024 docuseries "K-Pop Idols," and it's now poised to do it again -- albeit, this time, with a music competition series. Closing out Apple's August release slate is the eight-part "KPOPPED," a spectacle-driven cultural mash-up hosted by Soojeong Son that pairs Western music icons with some of the hottest K-pop groups. The goal: To reimagine familiar hits in the format of a head-to-head battle. Picture TLC teaming up with ITZY, or Boyz II Men collaborating with ATEEZ, as they deliver genre-bending performances for a live audience in Seoul that votes for the winner. Executive produced by Lionel Richie and Megan Thee Stallion (who also stars here), "KPOPPED" features PSY, Kesha, J Balvin, Kylie Minogue, and more. All episodes drop August 29.
