Contract situation reportedly not in great place for Patriots dream trade target

Contract situation reportedly not in great place for Patriots dream trade target

USA Today13 hours ago

The rift between the Washington Commanders and two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Terry McLaurin isn't any closer to closing.
When responding to a fan question in a mailbag article, NFL insider Albert Breer claimed things were "not in a great place" between McLaurin and the Commanders. However, he does expect the two sides to resume negotiations when the players return from their break. Whether that leads to an actual deal or not remains to be seen.
Breer wrote:
"They have a lot of work to do. I'd expect that work will pick up again when the league comes back from break in a few weeks. But it's still not in a great place. So we'll see what happens—there's plenty of time to get something done."
The mere mention of a contract dispute involving a talented wide receiver should get the New England Patriots' attention. They are still reconstructing their roster, and the addition of a playmaker like McLaurin would be a major lift to the offense.
But how far is McLaurin willing to go to get a new deal? He skipped out on mandatory minicamp. Would he skip training camp and be willing to sit out actual games for a new contract?
The latter might be the only way a team like the Patriots would have any hope of a blockbuster trade.

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Compared to 3-Time Super Bowl Champ

Buccaneers' Baker Mayfield Compared to 3-Time Super Bowl Champ originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Baker Mayfield has turned around his career since arriving in Tampa Bay on a one-year deal to play with the Buccaneers in 2023. Advertisement Replacing legend and seven-time Super Bowl Champion Tom Brady is no easy proposition, but Mayfield's transition in Tampa Bay has been seamless. Posting two career seasons since being signed by general manager Jason Licht, Mayfield has helped the Bucs to a record-tying four straight NFC South titles and five playoff appearances in a row. As Mayfield enters his third season with the Bucs, his numbers are drawing a comparison to three-time Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback will enter his ninth season in the league next season, and has six Pro Bowl nods and three Super Bowl championships to his name, along with two losses in the Big Game. One to the Eagles last season and one to the Buccaneers and Tom Brady in 2020. Advertisement While Mayfield has not enjoyed the championships or accolades that Mahomes has, a quick glance at the pair's numbers tells a shocking story for some. FanDuel posted a graphic comparing the two former Texas Tech Red Raiders quarterbacks side-by-side. Fanduel Mayfield leads Mahomes over the past two seasons in every statistical category. The only one in which Mahomes is better is interceptions, where he has one less than Mayfield. The Bucs QB leads in passing yards (8,544 - 8,111), passing touchdowns (69 - 53), completion percentage (67.9 - 67.3) and passer rating (100-7 - 93). No one is saying Baker is better than Patrick, but numbers don't lie, and Mayfield should certainly be talked about in the same regard when it comes to regular season stats. Buccaneers' Wide Receiver Ranked in NFL's 'Bounce-Back' Players for 2025

Buccaneers' Wide Receiver Ranked in NFL's 'Bounce-Back' Players for 2025 originally appeared on Athlon Sports. After Chris Godwin was lost for the season last year in a Week 7 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are looking forward to his return in 2025. Advertisement Godwin was leading the NFL with 50 catches and 576 yards when he went down last season. He also had posted five touchdowns. The Bucs are hoping for a healthy return in 2025 where they can add him to a re-tooled wideout room that includes former Ohio State Buckeyes receiver Emeka Egbuka, who general manager Jason Licht grabbed with the No. 19 overall pick in the first round this year. Bleacher Report's Moe Moton has Godwin No. 8 on his list of the top bounce-back candidates for 2025. "Before Chris Godwin dislocated his ankle in Week 7 of the previous season, he averaged 82.3 receiving yards per game, his second-highest rate in a single term," Moton wrote. "Some managers have concerns about Godwin because of his recovery timetable, the Buccaneers losing offensive coordinator Liam Coen and the addition of rookie first-round wideout Emeka Egbuka. While those factors cloud Godwin's outlook, he remains the Buccaneers' most dynamic receiver, still in his prime. At 31, Mike Evans barely kept his 1,000-yard receiving season streak alive last year. Entering his second term, Jalen McMillan is in the early stages of development. Egbuka has to earn quarterback Baker Mayfield's trust as a reliable receiver. Advertisement "The Buccaneers promoted pass game coordinator Josh Grizzard to replace Coen. So, they won't go through a complete reset in the passing game. If healthy, Godwin will remain a key playmaker in what could be an aggressive aerial attack. In 2021 and 2022, he finished 15th and 19th, respectively, in fantasy scoring among wide receivers." Commanders Predicted For 'Rapid Improvement' In Offensive Rankings

Commanders Predicted For 'Rapid Improvement' In Offensive Rankings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. What a difference a year makes. The Washington Commanders entered last season as an unknown quantity after a host of changes both on and off the field. Advertisement Now, they enter 2025 as an NFC big dog with Super Bowl aspirations. Thanks to head coach Dan Quinn, general manager Adam Peters, and quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Commanders are ready to reload and go one better this upcoming season. The additions of Deebo Samuel and Laremy Tunsil to an offense that was already explosive could be what tips Kliff Kingsbury's unit over the top. And for Pro Football Network, in their latest offensive rankings, Washington comes in at No. 6. "The Before Jayden Daniels era was grim, posting underwhelming Offense+ grades of 69.0, 65.9, and 64.7 from 2021-23, but all of that changed with the explosive QB at the controls (2024: 86.6)," Pro Football Network writes. Advertisement "As he develops consistency and Washington embraces a win-now philosophy that seemed like a pipe dream 12 months ago, there's room for the Commanders to sustain their rapid improvement and flirt with the top spot in these rankings." Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn (L) and quarterback Jayden Daniels (5). Geoff Burke-Imagn Images Considering how potent the unit was last season, adding Samuel, who is devastating as both a runner and receiver, will give Kingsbury another thread to pull. Plus, the expected improvement of Daniels and the offense as a whole in Year 2 under Kliff is what gives fans hope and excitement that last season wasn't a flash in the pan. Everything has been going smoothly this offseason (Terry McLaurin contract aside), as the Commanders look every part an NFC contender in 2025. Advertisement The offense will be the driving force again, with Daniels at the helm, McLaurin and Samuel as his passing weapons, Brian Robinson Jr. and Austin Ekeler out of the backfield, yeah, this is a top-10 offense in football.
