Attempt being made to disturb Madurai's tradition of social harmony

The Hindu19-06-2025
Madurai has a tradition of social harmony where equality and brotherhood is followed. The Sangh Parivar is conducting the Lord Murugan devotees conference in Madurai to disturb this harmony and keeping the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections on their mind, said VCK president and Chidambaram MP Thol. Thirumavalavan, on Thursday.
Addressing the gathering at the Human Chain protest organised in Madurai by the members of Madurai Madha Nallinakka Makkal Kootamaipu, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that BJP, Hindu Munnani and the Sangh Paraivar who have never voiced for the public with respect to several issues had earlier tried to divide the people through the Tirupparankundaram issue. Now, they are attempting to disturb harmony though the conference.
They have never spoken for precedence to Tamil in the temple rituals and are taking steps to eliminate the findings of Keeladi and Tamil civilization. The Sangh Parivar is trying to use the method which is being used by them in the North to divide the people. The people of Tamil Nadu should stay united and oppose the attempt being made to disturb communal harmony, he said.
Advocate S. Vanchinathan, the Coordinator of the forum, said that the conference organised by Hindu Munnani is not a religious conference, but was a political conference targeting the 2026 Assembly elections. Mixing religion and politics is dangerous. In the North, they divided the people in the name of Lord Ram and here they want to do the same in the name of Lord Murugan, he said. He urged the State government to monitor the conference and ensure that communal harmony is not disturbed.
Earlier, Mr. Thirumavalavan visited Tirupparankundram and interacted with the people. Addressing media persons, he said that an attempt had been made to divide the people. But, there was no enmity between the people and they have remained united.

‘Only education can break chains of dictatorship, Sanatan': Kamal Haasan at Chennai event

Actor and Rajya Sabha member Kamal Haasan has said, 'Education is the only weapon that can break the chains of dictatorship and Sanatanam.' The Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) leader was speaking at an event organised by the Agaram Foundation in Chennai on Sunday, ANI reported. On July 25, Haasan officially stepped into the Parliament for the first time, taking oath as a Rajya Sabha Member. (PTI) His comments come when a former minister in Maharashtra, too, held Sanatan Dharma responsible for caste atrocities, and sought to differentiate between it and Hinduism. 'There was never any religion called Sanatan Dharma. We are followers of Hindu Dharma,' NCP-SP leader Jitendra Awhad said. Haasan, in his speech on Sunday, said, 'Don't take anything else in your hands, only education. We cannot win without it, because the majority can make you lose. Majority (of) fools will make you lose… That's why we must hold on to it (education) firmly.' Haasan further said the introduction of NEET in 2017 for medical education admissions has 'reduced' chances for many students. The MP also recounted a recent interaction with Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin, speaking about Agaram foundation work. "I told the chief minister that NGOs were not asking for anything like money — they're only asking for permission to work. He assured me that steps are being taken in that direction. I am proud to be involved in this cause," he said. Haasan concluded his address by stressing that the work of real leaders often goes unrecognised, despite the lasting impact they leave behind. 'Leadership isn't about staying in power, it's about making change happen, even if your name fades away with the waves.' Kamal Haasan's Parliament debut On July 25, Haasan officially stepped into the Parliament for the first time, taking oath as a Rajya Sabha Member. The actor took his oath in Tamil, which was met with enthusiastic desk-thumping from other MPs. Haasan's induction into the Rajya Sabha is a significant chapter in his political journey, marking his entry into national-level legislation. His nomination was supported by the ruling DMK-led alliance, which had promised him a seat in the Upper House in return for MNM's support during the 2024 general elections. Speaking to the media outside Parliament earlier that day, the 69-year-old actor-politician told reporters, "I am very proud and honoured," as reported by ANI. Prior to this, Haasan found himself at the centre of a controversy sparked during the 'Thug Life' movie audio launch event held in Chennai on May 24. During the event, he had reportedly remarked that 'Kannada was born out of Tamil". The statement triggered strong reactions in Karnataka, leading the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) to ban the film's release and seek an apology from Haasan. The actor issued a clarification, stating that he never meant to offend anyone and emphasised his admiration for the Kannada language and its people.

I am neither B Team of DMK nor going to align with the party, asserts O Panneerselvam

CHENNAI: Former Chief Minister, who is heading the AIADMK Cadres Rights Retrieval Committee (ACRRC), on Monday stoutly denied the rumours that he will be acting as the B Team of the DMK as well as intending to ally with the ruling party. "There is not even an iota of truth in these speculations," Panneerselvam said in a statement here, adding that there was no politics in his meeting with Chief Minister MK Stalin except to inquire about his health. "Calling on people who return from the hospital and condoling those who have lost dear ones is Tamil culture. When my mother passed away, the CM called on me to console," Panneerselvam said. He also clarified that he has been treading the path shown by late leaders MG Ramachandran and J Jayalalithaa and wishes to bring back Amma's (J Jayalalithaa) rule in Tamil Nadu in the 2026 Assembly elections. Panneerselvam highlighted that his statement on Samagra Shiksha funds on July 29 was not the first on the subject. He said that nearly a year ago, he had placed this demand before the Central government and condemned the Hindu Munnani, which had criticised late leaders Periyar and Arignar Anna on June 25. Besides, when former BJP state president criticised Jayalalithaa, he strongly condemned him through a statement on June 12, 2023. Panneerselvam also stated that he had registered his view in support of the two-language policy in Tamil Nadu.

AIADMK subservient to BJP, DMK is fighting for Tamils, says Stalin

CHENNAI: DMK president and Chief Minister M K Stalin on Sunday charged that while the AIADMK has become subservient to the BJP by meekly surrendering to it, the DMK has been passionately standing against 'its anti-Tamil and anti-human' machinations. The DMK president, in a letter to the party cadre ahead of the death anniversary of former CM M Karunanidhi on August 7, targeted both the AIADMK and its ally, the BJP. '(Edappadi) Palaniswami, who lacks any basic ideologies, has knelt before the BJP and forged an alliance, much to the disgust of genuine cadre of the AIADMK. Besides leaning on the wrong place (for political alliance), Palaniswami has been unleashing a malicious campaign in his tour,' Stalin said. Taking on the BJP, the DMK president said while the saffron party continues to 'murder democracy using governors', the Tamil Nadu government, through its legal battle, has established that the popular government in the state is more powerful than the governors.
