Kelantan cleric entitled to his opinion, says Tuan Ibrahim

KLANG : PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man has downplayed a prominent religious scholar's call for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's administration to remain until the end of its term, describing it as a personal opinion.
Tuan Ibrahim said Sheikh Wazir Che Awang Al-Makki Hafizahullah, who is the deputy chairman of Jabhah Pondok Kelantan, was entitled to express his views like anyone else.
'That is his personal opinion. I believe if there's a new prime minister, it might improve the economy.
'We have our own experts who can offer better perspectives,' he told a press conference after officiating the Selangor PAS Youth general assembly at Dewan Mawar Biru Duo in Kapar here today.
Earlier, it was reported that Sheikh Wazir had expressed hope the unity government under Anwar would remain until the end of its term.
He said a frequent change of government was 'not in line with Islamic values' and could negatively affect the advancement of Islam and the economy.
He was believed to be responding to ongoing efforts by certain quarters, particularly the opposition, to topple the government with a major protest rally planned next week.
Yesterday, Anwar challenged his critics to table a vote of no-confidence in the Dewan Rakyat if they wished to take over Putrajaya.
He called on those who wanted to topple the government to follow the proper process.
If they did not have the support in the Dewan Rakyat, he said they must wait for the next general election instead of resorting to street demonstrations or inciting the public.
Perikatan Nasional has planned a 'Turun Anwar' mass rally for July 26 in Kuala Lumpur to push for Anwar's resignation.
The organisers expect up to 300,000 participants although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300.

Anwar: Go and table a no-confidence motion if you actually have the backing, Speaker won't stop you in Parliament

PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — The government will not obstruct any vote of confidence from being tabled in Parliament, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reportedly said today. New Straits Times quoted him saying he had instructed Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul to allow such a motion to proceed if submitted. 'If there is a motion today, the very first day of Parliament, I will wait for the vote of no confidence. If they have the majority, go ahead. That is our system,' he reportedly said during the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly. He added that any move to unseat the government through unconstitutional means would be unlawful and risk destabilising the country. Malay Mail understands that so far there is no plan from the Opposition to table a no-confidence motion, despite a meeting to galvanise the disparate parties chaired by Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Friday. Johari said over the weekend that the current sitting will be focusing on the 13th Malaysia Plan instead. Today's remark echoed the one Anwar made on Saturday, where he stressed that issues should be addressed comprehensively through dialogue rather than incitement or emotional appeals, including demands for his resignation. Anwar said detractors should just table a motion of non-confidence against him in Parliament if they really have support, rather than organising a protest scheduled for this Saturday, Yesterday, Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar reminded civil servants not to participate in a rally scheduled to be held in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday. He said it is inappropriate for civil servants to join such a gathering, as doing so would be inconsistent with the principle of 'Loyalty to King and Country', as enshrined in the Rukunegara. The police previously said it expects between 10,000 to 15,000 participants to attend the 'Himpunan Turun Anwar' rally scheduled for July 26. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail assured the public that police would handle security control during the rally in a professional manner, but reminded all parties to comply with the provisions of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

Wait for Wednesday? PM asks to be given more time to finalise ‘extraordinary tribute' announcement

PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said his anticipated major announcement has been delayed to tomorrow or Wednesday, which he described as an 'extraordinary tribute' to Malaysians. He said more time is needed to finalise the matter following the recent unity government retreat in Port Dickson. 'These concerns require me to consider what changes and announcements are necessary to ease their demands,' he was quoted saying by New Straits Times. 'I have said that within a day or two, that I will make the announcements, whether in the form of additional measures, but it needs a little more time to address them properly,' he added during the Prime Minister's Department monthly assembly. Anwar said last week the Finance Ministry is currently refining proposals that can be announced immediately to ease the burden on the people and address current issues. According to the Prime Minister, the government is currently looking for the best approach to balance the rising cost of living with the country's fiscal capacity, given that existing expenditure on assistance such as the Rahmah Cash Contribution (STR) and civil servant salary increases has reached billions of ringgit. On July 14, Anwar hinted at the matter through a post on Facebook with a poster reading 'Coming Soon', along with the message: 'An Extraordinary Appreciation for Malaysians. With Malaysiaku.' The post caught the attention of Malaysians online who generally expressed excitement and anticipation for the announcement which is expected to provide comprehensive benefits to the people.

Anwar denies last-minute switch in CJ pick, says vilified for one week just because process was still ongoing

PUTRAJAYA, July 21 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has reportedly denied claims of a last-minute change in the proposed candidate for Chief Justice. He said today that the appointment had already been submitted and approved by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong earlier in accordance with the Federal Constitution. 'They said the [judicial] system was compromised. There were those who wanted to politicise the issue,' he said at the monthly assembly of the Prime Minister's Department as quoted by New Straits Times. 'For a week, we were criticised, with claims that the prime minister did not respond. How could I respond at that time when the [judicial appointment] process was still ongoing?' He explained that under Article 122B of the Federal Constitution, the appointment of the Chief Justice requires the prime minister's recommendation and the King's consent after consultation with the Conference of Rulers. Court of Appeal Judge Wan Ahmad Farid will be sworn in as the country's 17th Chief Justice on July 28, succeeding Tengku Maimun, who retired on July 2. Datuk Abu Bakar Jais has been appointed as the new president of the Court of Appeal, while Datuk Azizah Nawawi has been appointed Chief Judge of Sabah and Sarawak. Anwar said earlier this week that 8 newly appointed Court of Appeal judges and 14 High Court judges are scheduled to be sworn in on July 28, with no judges removed. The appointments came following a purported leak from a Judicial Appointments Commission (JAC) meeting, which came hot on the heels of allegations that there had been attempts to influence the appointments of new judges. The claim later prompted nine government backbenchers to call for a Royal Commission of Inquiry, with Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail confirming an investigation into the matter.
