Kota Kinabalu: The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) urged the government to focus on strengthening students' proficiency in English and Chinese (Mandarin) before planning to include additional Asean languages such as Thai and Khmer. LDP Sec-Gen Datuk Chin Shu Ying although it may reflect Asean solidarity, the foundation of any language policy must be practicality and relevance to global and national development. He said English remains the most important language in science, technology, business, and diplomacy. At the same time, more countries, including in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East are beginning to adopt Chinese as a second language due to China's global influence. 'Our students are still struggling with English, and many lack adequate proficiency in Chinese. These two languages are not only academically critical, but they also serve as gateways to global opportunity. 'If Malaysia wants to remain competitive, our students must be equipped in both,' he said. Chin noted that major foreign investors such as Microsoft and Amazon, along with leading Chinese companies like Huawei, Alibaba Group, and ByteDance, have all made significant investments in Malaysia and continue to expand their operations here. 'These companies consistently identify language proficiency, particularly English and Mandarin, as key employment criteria. 'Without strong communication skills in English and Chinese, our graduates will face limitations not only abroad, but also in high-value sectors within our own country,' he said. Chin said weak English and Mandarin skills remain among main factors contributing to graduate unemployment. LDP warned against overloading an already stretched curriculum. 'Support for Asean unity, but not at the cost of undermining our students' ability to compete in the real world. Strengthening in English and Chinese is not optional, it is essential. Let us first ensure our students master English and Chinese before introducing additional language electives. 'Only then can we build an education system that is practical, competitive, and globally aligned,' he said. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Thailand deploys F-16 jets in second strike ahead of midnight ceasefire with Cambodia

Image from The Nation Thailand/ANN BANGKOK (The Nation Thailand/ANN): Thai Air Force strikes border targets hours before ceasefire, as Cambodia continues troop build-up near disputed temple zones. Hours before the agreed ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia is set to take effect at midnight, the Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) conducted a second round of F-16 fighter jet operations targeting areas near Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temples in Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province. The evening sortie involved two F-16 jets and followed an earlier morning mission in the same area. Both operations reportedly achieved their objectives and the aircraft returned safely to base, according to military officials. The Second Army Area's Operations Centre reported on the situation as of 12pm today, confirming that fighting along the Thai–Cambodian border remains intense. Cambodian forces were observed reinforcing their positions and increasing troop deployments from further inland in an effort to seize control of strategic locations near the Ta Muen Thom and Ta Kwai temple zones. Cambodia and Thailand agreed to an "immediate and unconditional ceasefire" from midnight (1700 GMT) on Monday, in a bid to halt their deadliest conflict in more than a decade after five days of fierce fighting that has displaced more than 300,000 people. After days of efforts by Malaysia, chair of the Asean regional bloc, the United States and China to bring both sides to the table, the two countries' leaders agreed to end hostilities, resume direct communications and create a mechanism to implement the truce. At least 36 people have been killed in the fighting, mostly civilians. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet thanked his acting Thai counterpart Phumtham Wechayachai for what he said was a positive role and said he deeply appreciated Trump's "decisive mediation" and China's constructive participation. "We agreed that the fighting will stop immediately," he said, expressing confidence that both sides could rebuild trust and confidence. - The Nation Thailand/ANN
