Himachal CM directs scientific investigation into mysterious apple disease
A delegation of apple growers called on CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Tuesday and apprised him of a new disease. The disease was causing apple leaves to turn yellow and fall prematurely, leading to sharp decline in yield. The delegation urged the CM to take prompt action to investigate and control this issue.
Taking cognisance, CM directed the vice-chancellor of Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, to dispatch the University's expert teams to the affected areas immediately. He instructed that the disease be scientifically investigated and that orchardists be educated on preventive and control measures on the ground.
Sukhu emphasised that the disease was spreading rapidly and causing financial losses to the growers and it was imperative to address the situation swiftly. He asked the VC to submit a detailed report to the state government within seven days so that the appropriate measures could be taken at the earliest.
BJP's promise of raising Minimum Import Price (MIP) was misleading
Kuldeep Singh Rathore, AICC spokesperson and Congress MLA from Theog, speaking on the apple growers' crisis, said, 'The BJP leaders are talking about raising the MIP, but it seems like a hollow promise. We fear that import duties might be reduced instead. Any agreement like this must be bilateral, not one-sided. We have strongly presented our case. I thank all leaders working sincerely, including Anurag Thakur, who wrote to the Union minister,' he said.
'This is not about Congress or BJP. All MPs should stand united to protect ₹5,000 crore Himachal's apple economy, which is facing a crisis,' he said.
Nauni varsity scientists to visit apple orchards in Shimla district on July 9, 10
Experts from Nauni agricultural university will be conducting field visits and awareness campaigns across several areas of Shimla district on July 9 and 10. The initiative aims to alert farmers about prevalent diseases in apple and other stone fruits—particularly Alternaria leaf spot/blight and other foliar diseases.
Each team will include a plant pathologist, entomologist, fruit scientist along with other experts. They will carry out on-ground assessments of pest and disease conditions in apple orchards and provide scientific recommendations to growers.
A detailed advisory for orchardists will be issued after analysing the observations and findings from the visits.

Odisha announces 21 NACs to boost infrastructure and services under urbanisation
The Mohan Majhi Government on Friday (August 15, 2025) announced the creation of 21 new Notified Area Councils (NACs) to boost infrastructure and services in line with Odisha's urbanisation needs. 'Better infrastructure and urbanisation are key components of development. Only 17% of our population lives in urban areas. Considering the State's rapid growth and people's aspirations, our government has decided to establish 21 more NACs,' Chief Minister Mohan Majhi declared during the Independence Day celebrations here. The creation of NACs was a major campaign plank ahead of the 2024 elections. The previous Naveen Patnaik Government had promised to set up NACs and municipalities to woo semi-urban voters, but the names were never announced. After unfurling the Tricolour, Mr. Majhi dwelt at length on women's empowerment and safety — an issue on which the Opposition parties had been sharply critical. 'I have said on various platforms that the government follows a policy of zero tolerance towards crimes against women. Anyone committing violence against women — no matter how powerful or influential — belongs behind bars, not in civilised society,' he asserted. The CM, who also holds the Home portfolio, said the police had been given full authority to take necessary action. 'I have issued clear instructions that any neglect of women's safety will invite strict legal action. While law and order is generally under control, it must become more effective and robust,' he said. The State Government has recently faced criticism following a spate of incidents — including four girls committing self-immolation and several cases of gang rape and sexual assault — with both the Congress and Biju Janata Dal attacking its handling of women's safety.

Bengaluru: What began as an investigation into allegations of mass burials at Dharmasthala — one of the country's most prominent Hindu pilgrimage centres — has evolved into a politically charged contest over faith, identity, and control of the narrative. The special investigation team (SIT), tasked with examining claims that hundreds of bodies were secretly buried, has so far produced limited physical evidence. "In the near future, we will be marking the 200th birth anniversary of the great social reformer Jyotiba Phule. We are going to begin the celebrations for this anniversary. Phule's principles and the mantra "priority to the backward" are an inspiration for us," said Modi. The proposed celebrations mark the elevation of Phule, who was born into Mali caste, to the national pantheon.
