Hasina sentenced to 6 months jail by International Crimes Tribunal for contempt of court
A three-member tribunal, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder, passed the order today after reviewing a purported leaked phone conversation involving Hasina that circulated on social media last year, Daily Star reported.
In the audio clip, Hasina is allegedly heard telling former Gobindaganj upazila chairman Shakil Akanda Bulbul, "I have had 227 cases filed against me, so I have received a licence to kill 227 people."
The tribunal considered the statement contemptuous and a direct attempt to undermine the court.
Shakil Akanda Bulbul, a leader of the Awami League's banned student affiliate Chhatra League from Gaibandha's Gobindaganj, has been sentenced to two months in prison for his role in the conversation.
According to tribunal sources, the sentence will take effect only once the convicts surrender before the court or are arrested by law-enforcers.
Once enforced, the sentence will be classified as non-rigorous imprisonment.
This marks the first time Hasina has been sentenced in any case since her ouster from office on August 5 last year, in the face of a so-called student-led protest, and her fleeing to New Delhi, India, where she has been staying since then under heavy security.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) had conducted a forensic analysis and confirmed the authenticity of the audio.
The charges were filed against Hasina and Shakil by the ICT's Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam on April 30.
The tribunal accepted the charges that day and ordered the accused to respond by May 15. When they failed to do so, the tribunal issued a summons on May 25 for them to appear in court.
Although the law does not require the appointment of a state-funded lawyer in such cases, the court appointed a legal representative for Hasina 'in the interest of justice'.
For the full hearing of the case, the ICT appointed AY Mashiuzzaman as amicus curiae (a friend of the court).
Following the hearing, the court on Wednesday found both Hasina and Shakil guilty and delivered its verdict.
The ICT was originally established by the Awami League government in 2010 to try war crimes committed in 1971. After the fall of the Awami League government on Aug 5, 2024, the interim government initiated trials against Hasina and her associates under the same tribunal.
So far, three arrest warrants have been issued by the tribunal against Hasina. Among them, one warrant is based on five charges of crimes against humanity for her role in suppressing the July Uprising.
The interim government has amended the law to allow for the trial of the Awami League as a political party for its role in the July–August crackdown. Until that trial is concluded, a ban has been imposed on all activities of the Awami League.

E3 nations threaten to resume sanctions on Iran
Tehran, Aug 13 (UNI) France, Germany, and the UK, collectively known as the E3, have once again threatened Iran with the reimposition of the snapback UN sanctions, unless the country resumes negotiations, reports Iran International. In a letter to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the Security Council, the E3 foreign ministers reiterated their threats of reimposing international sanctions on Iran under the tenets of the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, unless Tehran resumes talks or asks for a deadline extension. 'We have made it clear that if Iran is not willing to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, E3 are prepared to trigger the snapback mechanism,' the ministers wrote, according to Financial Times' report. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbass Araghchi had dismissed the threats, stating that the E3 nations lacked both the capability and the authority, to reimpose said sanctions. Nonetheless, Iran's Ministry of Intelligence has warned ministries and businesses to be prepared for the looming snapback sanctions which seem more and more likely. The leaked document by the Ministry cautioned that renewed sanctions would target arms sales, freeze overseas assets, and reimpose restrictions on industries such as oil, petrochemicals, banking, shipping, insurance and sensitive technologies. As a countering move, a senior Iranian lawmaker warned on Wednesday that the parliament could move to withdraw Iran from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) if Western powers were to reimpose the UN sanctions. 'If the other side takes steps toward operationalizing the snapback mechanism and uses it, the Iranian parliament will definitely respond,' Manouchehr Mottaki, a member of parliament's economic committee, was quoted as saying by Iranian media. He said lawmakers were 'ready to pull the trigger' on an NPT exit, adding that the West had no legal grounds to restore sanctions under the 2015 nuclear deal and was using the threat only as leverage. SC ruling raises MP's political temperature
Bhopal, Aug 13 (UNI) The Supreme Court's ruling in the case pertaining to the constitutional validity of Other Backward Classes reservation -- under the Madhya Pradesh Public Service (Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and OBCs) Amendment Act, 2019 -- has raised the political temperature of the state. The apex court, while hearing the case yesterday, placed it in the 'top of the board' category and ruled that daily hearings would take place from September 23. New Delhi, Aug 13 (UNI) The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) today trained its guns at Gautam Adani, saying a summons was issued by a US court against the businessman but the Indian government didn't act on it in an alleged bid to shield him. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj claimed the US District Court for Eastern New York had issued the summons in September 2024 related to alleged corruption involving Rs 2,200 crore, but it remained unserved due to government inaction.
