New Delhi: The Indian Armed Forces, during Operation Sindoor, decimated the terror launchpads and training camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK). Reports now suggest that Pakistan has initiated a fresh effort to reconstruct terror camps. This rebuilding process is receiving full support from Pakistan's military, the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), and government authorities. During the operation, the India's S-400 air defence systems also played a pivotal role. Now, the Modi government is planning to purchase of two more squadrons of the long-range surface-to-air missile system from Russia, news agency ANI has reported. What Role Did S-400 Systems Play During Operation Sindoor?
During Operation Sindoor, the S-400 systems intercepted multiple Pakistan Air Force fighter jets and airborne early warning aircraft. Notably, one system achieved a record by hitting an aircraft over 300 kilometres away, highlighting its long-range strike capability. When will Russia deliver the remaining two S-400 squadrons?
Russia has assured India it will deliver the two remaining squadrons of the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile systems, which played a crucial role during Operation Sindoor against Pakistan last month, by 2026-27. According to a Times of India report, the delivery of the fourth and fifth squadrons of the S-400 air defence systems, which has been hugely delayed due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, figured in the bilateral meeting between defence minister Rajnath Singh and his Russian counterpart Andrey Belousov. Why is indigenous LRSAM development facing delays?
The move to consider additional S-400 units is also driven by delays in India's indigenous long-range surface-to-air missile (LRSAM) initiative, Project Kusha. Developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in partnership with Solar Defence and Aerospace Limited and Bharat Dynamics Limited, the project is still some time away from full deployment, making an interim solution necessary.
It is important to note that Each S-400 squadron has two missile batteries with 128 missiles each. These missiles have interception ranges of 120, 200, 250 and 380-km, as well as long-range acquisition and engagement radars and all-terrain transporter-erector vehicles.
The IAF has deployed the first three S-400 squadrons in north-west and east India to cater for both China and Pakistan.

Changes likely under renewed GST Two new rates: The central government has proposed two rates, 5 per cent and 18 per cent, under the revamped GST regime, news agency PTI reported, citing sources. Meanwhile, a special 40 per cent rate is likely to be levied on luxury goods, it added. Move from 12% to 5%: Citing government sources, the news agency reported that 99 per cent of the items that currently fall under the 12 per cent GST tax slab will be moved to the 5 per cent bracket under the renewed regime. Shift from 28% to 18%: Furthermore, around 90 per cent of taxable items in the 28 per cent bracket would be moved to the 18 per cent slab. With this renewed GST move, the Centre reportedly expects to give a major boost to consumption, which "will offset revenue loss due to rate rationalisation". What PM Modi said on GST In his Independence Day speech, PM Modi said that the central government will introduce next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, noting that discussions over the same have been held with states. 'We have discussed with states and will usher in next-generation GST reforms by Diwali, which will be a Diwali gift for citizens. Taxes on items used by the common man will be reduced substantially. Our MSMEs will benefit hugely. Daily-use items will become cheaper, which will also strengthen our economy,' he said. A Group of Ministers (GoM), including state finance ministers, is already working on rate rationalisation and the pruning of GST slabs. The Prime Minister also said that a task force will be set up to recommend all necessary GST reforms in a time-bound manner for the 21st century. He said that India must also focus on high-quality, affordable products to build a prosperous, self-reliant nation that honours the sacrifices of freedom fighters. The PM emphasised that self-reliance goes beyond imports, exports, or currency exchange. 'It is tied to our capabilities. When self-reliance begins to erode, so does our strength. To preserve, maintain, and enhance our capabilities, self-reliance is essential.' He said that India must focus on strengthening itself, not limiting others, to earn global respect amid the increasing economic self-interest.

The importance of Project Kusha has increased after the way India's Akash system and Russia's S-400 system showed their prowess in Operation Sindoor against Pakistan in May. It has become clear that if future wars are to be won, then long-range missile defence systems will have to be developed. How will Kusha daunt Pakistan and China? Project Kusha will be a big deterrent against Pakistan and China. In this, such arrangements are being made that any missile, drone or plane of both enemy countries will be shot down before it enters Indian airspace. This system will have 3 types of interceptor missiles, which will rush towards their target at lightning speed as soon as they get a signal from the radar and turn it into a heap of fire in a few moments. What are the features of Project Kusha? M1: 150 km range, to target short-range threats like drones, cruise missiles and stealth aircraft. M2: 250 km range, to destroy medium-range threats such as airborne warning and control systems (AWACS) and anti-ship ballistic missiles (ASBM). M3: 350-400 km range, to target large aircraft and some short and medium-range ballistic missiles (SRBMs and IRBMs). This system has a long-range state-of-the-art radar system which will immediately identify any aerial threat moving towards India, even from a distance of 500 km. Once the project is successful, then 5 squadrons of it will be purchased for the Indian Air Force.
