Moment female thief steals woman's £200 jacket after careless Yodel driver left it 'safely delivered' in her front garden

Daily Mail19-05-2025
Shocking footage shows the moment a brazen thief steals a woman's £200 jacket after a Yodel delivery driver carelessly left it outside her home.
Harriet Phillips, from London, watched helplessly through her Ring camera as the man placed her parcel on the ground where it was fully visible from the street.
The package contained a £200 limited edition Adidas jacket that the 32-year-old had ordered from from Ebay.
Harriet, a creative director, happened to be on holiday when she received a text saying the jacket was due to be delivered the next day.
Later, she received confirmation that it had been delivered safely to her 'lobby,' but Harriet doesn't have a lobby.
Upon checking her Ring camera, Harriet discovered that the parcel had simply been left on the ground outside.
Just an hour and a half later, she watched a woman approach her house and snatch the package.
She can be seen looking over her shoulder to check no one has seen her before she hurries away with the stolen parcel.
Harriet said: 'It was really shocking at first. I was upset to lose such an expensive item, as well as how it was all handled.
'I wasn't expecting it to be delivered until the day before and then there was no option to change the delivery date.
'I just assumed that they would drop it at a collection point or send it back for re-delivery.
'It felt so careless and I couldn't why the delivery person would think that was ok.'
Harriet had ordered a jacket from the Year of the Snake collection Adidas which came out earlier this year and is only available in stores in China.
The jacket itself cost £150 from a private seller but with shipping and insurance, the total came to just under £200.
Harriet contacted Yodel but was told that the item had been safely delivered.
Harriet said: 'To be honest, I'm just as frustrated by the way Yodel handled it as I am by the actual loss of the jacket.
'When I called them, the person just kept saying that they had the notification to show it had been delivered to the lobby securely.
'When I tried to tell them I had video to prove otherwise, they just said they have satellite tracking on the package so they know it was safely delivered.
'It was almost like I was talking to a robot.'
Harriet contacted the seller and they in turn contacted Yodel, but they just got the same response.
The case has now been closed by eBay and Harriet feels at a loss about what she can do next.
She said: 'It's just really annoying that they can do this.
'I'm not even angry at the person who stole it.
'My friend, who has lived in the area for a while, knows this person as a local homeless person and I don't blame them for taking the opportunity.
'For me, the blame lies solely on Yodel.'
A Yodel spokesperson commented: 'The safe delivery of our parcels is our top priority, and we're sorry that Ms. Phillips' experience fell short of our usual standards on this occasion.
'We are supporting Ms Philips to seek a refund.'

Experienced skydiver deliberately fell to her death, coroner finds

An experienced skydiver deliberately fell to her death from 15,500ft the day after her relationship ended, an inquest heard. Jade Damarell, 32, did not deploy her main parachute or the reserve and switched off an automatic activation device (AAD) before she crashed on to farmland near the airfield at Shotton Colliery, County Durham, on April 27, the hearing was told. The marketing manager left instructions on the lock screen of her phone on how to access the handset and left notes and details of her finances in its Notes folder, the inquest at Crook Civic Centre, County Durham, was told. Coroner Leslie Hamilton gave a conclusion of suicide after finding that she intended to take her own life that morning. Ms Damarell, who was born in Hong Kong and lived in Caerphilly, Wales, loved skydiving and had completed more than 500 jumps. The day before she died, she had completed six jumps safely and without issues. Dr Hamilton summarised a statement from her former partner which stated that 'they had ended their relationship the night before'. The coroner did not go into further detail, except to say that they had met through a shared love of skydiving. Bryn Chaffe, co-owner of Sky-High Skydiving from where she jumped, gave a statement in which he said he saw Ms Damarrel eating toast in the base's cafe before she jumped and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. A post-mortem found she died from blunt trauma injuries and toxicological tests were negative for drink or drugs. Her GP reported that she was not on medication at the time. A report for the coroner by British Skydiving, which investigated her fatal freefall, found that all the equipment was in working order. Ms Damarell would normally wear a camera on her helmet but did not have one on when she fell, the organisation said. She confirmed she had an AAD, which was designed to deploy a parachute if a certain speed or altitude was met, but it was later found she had switched it off. She was aware that she had to deploy a parachute before her altitude dropped below 2,500ft, the inquest heard. Detective Inspector Andrew Stephenson, of Durham Police, attended the scene and found Ms Damarell had landed on her back. He later recovered Ms Damarell's phone and found she had left instructions on its lock screen on how to open it and to look in its Notes folder. The detective's report said she left a note for her family 'apologising and thanking them for their support'. Dr Hamilton concluded that the 'very experienced' skydiver chose not to deploy either of her parachutes or use the AAD and that she did intend to take her own life. Jeff Montgomery, head of safety and training at British Skydiving, attended the hearing and said afterwards: 'We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jade Damarell and it is an extremely tragic incident.' Her parents Liz and Andrew Samuel observed the hearing remotely. After the inquest, her family said: 'Our beloved daughter Jade was a brilliant, beautiful, brave and truly extraordinary person. 'A bright, adventurous, free spirit, she lived with immense energy, passion and love and touched countless lives with her warmth and kindness.'

Watch the heartbreaking moment Sheridan Smith breaks down in tears live on This Morning

SHERIDAN Smith broke down in tears live on This Morning during an emotional interview for her new ITV drama. The actress, 43, stars in new TV show I Fought the Law, which tells the true story of nurse Ann Ming's fight for justice. 6 6 6 6 Ann lost her daughter 22-year-old Julie Hogg in 1989 when she was murdered in County Durham by William 'Billy' Dunlop. The new four-part drama is based on Ann's 15 year campaign to get the Double Jeopardy Law, overturned, which prevented her daughter's killer from being retried after being acquitted. Sheridan and Ann joined hosts Rylan and Sian Welby in the studio on Thursday. Ann explained that her daughter Julie never would have disappeared by choice and leave her three-year-old child without a mum. The heartbroken mum said her daughter's killer was "bragging after his acquittal, saying it's the perfect murder but because of the Double Jeopardy Law he couldn't be retried." Ann made it her mission to get the law changed and wrote letters to her local MP and the then Home Secretary Jack Straw. She was told her case was one of the most "compelling in the country" which got the ball rolling for change. Sheridan was seen tightly holding Ann's hand while she bravely spoke about her fight. Ann: "When I was approached by ITV productions about this drama, I was a bit apprehensive, people think I had a team of lawyers behind me backing me, they don't realise it was a one man band. "They said it would be Sheridan Smith and I've watched everything she's ever been in, I mean since she's first came on the scene. Sheridan Smith speaks about booze sessions for the musical Opening Night "I thought they couldn't get anyone better to play me. "What she doesn't know, is that I came on set twice and I watched her play me and it was like watching me." The special compliment left Sheridan in tears, with the star saying: "I'm very honoured that you say that Ann because that's all I wanted." With tears running down her face, Rylan handed her a tissue. Sheridan continued: "I'm so grateful that Ann okayed me to play her and I can only imagine what Ann went through. "Filming for me was only 10 weeks but I really got to know Ann and we became very close." She added: "Portraying it for that short time was an emotional rollercoaster, so I can only imagine how Ann felt after that 17 year battle and fighting the law and paved the way for so many other families, I'm in awe of her. "Luckily I didn't know Ann was on set otherwise I would have gone to pieces." Ann said: "She's done it proud. "I don't think they could have got another actress to do it as well. "She takes on a role and she becomes that person." On November 16 1989, single mum Julie went missing in Billingham, Cleveland, after her late shift at a pizza parlour. The police classified the case as a missing persons, but three months later Ann found her behind a bath panel in her home. Despite finding Julie's keys under William's floorboards, he was found not guilty. But then 10 years later, while in prison for another crime, he bragged about how he wouldn't be punished for the crime that he did because of the double jeopardy law. It was repealed in 2005 and he was jailed for life the following year. Sheridan has starred in various TV shows over the years. Some include: Four Lives, Gavin and Stacey, The Teacher and The Moorside. The star is "honoured" to take on the new role. Sheridan said: 'I am so honoured to have been asked to play the role of Ann Ming, a mother so determined to fight for justice for her murdered daughter that she spent 15 years campaigning for the Double Jeopardy Law to be changed. "She is a truly courageous and remarkable woman to whom we all owe a debt of gratitude.' 6 6

Edinburgh doubles firework ban zones for Bonfire Night

Councillors have said that fireworks can be banned in nine areas in Edinburgh this coming bonfire season - more than double compared to last Firework Control Zones (FCZ) have been agreed in response to widespread disorder last year, when they were first in restrictions will return for 10 days around 5 November in Niddrie, Balerno, Seafield and Calton Hill, while Corstorphine, Longstone, Sighthill/Broomhouse, Gracemount and Moredun will get a FCZ for the first time. A report presented to councillors on the Culture and Communities Committee said there had been "overwhelming support" for the zones during a public consultation. Edinburgh became the first local authority to outlaw fireworks in August 2024, in response to constant anti-social was serious disorder in the Niddrie area the previous year, which led to support for a ban from community groups and animal welfare charities. The Scottish government gave local authorities new powers to designate FCZs in 2022 following a major riot in year police said Niddrie, Calder Road, Gracemount and Moredun were the areas in Edinburgh worse affected by disorder linked to city council had responses from almost 1,800 people and organisations to its consultation on local firework bans this year, with at least 88% in favour control zones in each of the nine designated areas. A report presented to councillors said it was also likely that Police Scotland would again introduce Dispersal Zones in the city, allowing them to instruct groups of two or more people to move off a firework in an FCZ is a criminal offence unless as part of a properly licensed public display. Animal welfare concerns In early November two red pandas at Edinburgh Zoo died, which veterinary experts said was a direct result of noise from Roxie choked on her own vomit on Bonfire Night, five days after her mother Ginger died unexpectedly - again at a time when pyrotechnics were being set off in the area around the zoo was not included in the four exclusion zones in 2024, but will be covered by the Corstorphine zone this Supple, deputy chief executive of the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland (RZSS), said staff were grateful for this year's exclusion zone around the zoo as it would help protect animals. He said: "The loud noises can be incredibly frightening. Many pet owners, livestock owners, horse owners will be aware of the sheer fright, panic and stress that fireworks can cause animals. "The more we can reduce the noise, the better it's going to be for animal welfare."Murrayfield Stadium is less than two miles away from Edinburgh Zoo, and recent concerts there, including the Oasis events, have concluded with a fireworks Royal Military Tattoo has replaced its traditional fireworks finale at the castle this summer with a drone show and low-noise Mr Supple said this was less of an issue compared Bonfire Night, adding: "Our biggest concern around fireworks in the November period is the constant barrage of noises which can cause severe stress to animals – not just once or twice, but over a prolonged period of time."Councillors in Glasgow have already confirmed it will have three firework control zones from 1 to 10 November this year, following a failed attempt to implement zones in 2024.
