Fernandes makes feelings clear after ex-Man Utd star proves point to Ratcliffe

Daily Mirror24-05-2025

Bruno Fernandes' future at Manchester United is the subject of speculation and he could suffer the same fate as former team-mate Scott McTominay, who was sold against their manager's wishes
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has sent a touching message to ex-team-mate Scott McTominay after he fired Napoli to the Serie A title. McTominay, 28, was sold by boyhood club United last summer for £25million.
Then-manager Erik ten Hag was against the move but Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the rest of the Red Devils hierarchy couldn't resist Napoli's offer. McTominay has proven his doubters wrong and was named Serie A player of the season Friday after scoring in their 2-0 victory over Cagliari which sealed the Scudetto.

The midfielder's overhead kick was his 12th league goal of the season and post-match, he was given the Serie A MVP award and his 96-rated card on the game EA FC 25. Fernandes shared a photo of McTominay with the two accolades on Instagram.

"Congrats my friend," the United skipper wrote as the caption. "Resilience, discipline and determination have always been there from you! Now with confidence your qualities are shining more than ever. Enjoy your moment."
Critics claim that clubs are incentivised to sell homegrown players due to the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules. By selling an academy product, the club makes 'pure profit'.
The rule was something which Ten Hag alluded to when explaining McTominay's departure. "Unfortunately, it's the rules," he bemoaned following the 28-year-old's exit. "You have to discuss the rules to do sales and obviously homegrown players, academy players, bring more value.
"It's not the right thing to do but for everyone, for all parts, it's a good deal. For Scott, he is happy with it. Of course, for Napoli, a very good player but also for us."
The Dutchman, who was sacked in October, added: "I'm very happy for him and for us, but it's mixed [feelings] because I would have preferred not to lose him. He has Manchester United in his veins... He was so important for our team, he was at Manchester United for over 22 years."

Amid the elation of Napoli's title win, McTominay said: "I'm lost for words. It's incredible you know, the sacrifice that every single player in the group has put forward to the cause.
"The people deserve it because they've been behind us from day one, and for me to come and experience this is a dream."

Fernandes' own future at United is uncertain, revealing after Wednesday's Europa League final defeat to Tottenham that he'd be willing to leave Old Trafford if they wanted to 'cash in'.
"If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is. And football sometimes is like this."

Ex-Liverpool chief outlines key detail as second Florian Wirtz bid rejected

Florian Wirtz is at the top of Liverpool's list of transfer targets but their first two bids for the German star have fallen short of Bayer Leverkusen's valuation Former Liverpool CEO Peter Moore has suggested the Reds will be looking to offload players to raise money before upping their bid for Florian Wirtz. Bayer Leverkusen have knocked back two bids for Germany star Wirtz, the second of which could have seen Liverpool pay north of £100million including add-ons. Wirtz has emerged as a major target as Arne Slot looks to add further quality to his Premier League winning squad. The Reds look to have fought off the challenge of Bayern Munich to install themselves as frontrunners, but they're still some way from Leverkusen's valuation of their star man. ‌ Moore, who was CEO between 2017 and 2020, worked with FSG when the owners sold Philippe Coutinho for a nine-figure sum in the same window the club completed a club record deal for Virgil van Dijk. "I think three or four key signings will be critical," he told talkSPORT. ‌ "There are going to be some hard decisions on players who are going to have to leave, and if Wirtz is real - I know my owners pretty well - then somebody is going to have to go to a) get the money [back] and b) make room in the payroll salary for that." The Reds have already brought in around £8.4million after allowing Trent Alexander-Arnold to join Real Madrid a few weeks early, but there could be more work to do. Slot's team have already added around £60m of new talent, with Giorgi Mamardashvili and Jeremie Frimpong joining this summer. When it comes to raising funds, though, there are a few contenders to be offloaded. ‌ Chief among that number is Caoimhin Kelleher, whose time looks to be up following Mamardashvili's arrival. The Irish international is a target for Brentford, and appears likely to net his club £18m. Darwin Nunez is another who could fetch a significant fee, with interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, while Barcelona and Al Nassr have their eye on Luis Diaz. If Liverpool do cash in on Colombia star Diaz, they can expect to turn a profit on a player who cost them north of £40m when he joined from Porto in 2022. ‌ Over the weekend, Diaz's partner Gera Ponce prompted speculation over the forward's future with an Instagram post. "To the incredible Liverpool fans. From the first day we arrived, we felt first hand what it means to be a part of this club. "We knew the slogan was 'You'll Never Walk Alone', but to hear them sing it with so much passion, support us every moment and show such unconditional love... confirmed to us that here you never walk alone," she wrote. "This fan doesn't just support, it feels. And what you have made my boyfriend and our entire family feel is something we carry in our souls. "Thank you for so much love, for so much dedication and for making us feel at home. Being a part of this fan is a privilege. There's no doubt: they're the best in the world. This is a real bond, deep and strong, that reaffirms that we'll never walk alone." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Liam Delap's huge Chelsea contract details as forward agrees terms on transfer

Chelsea are finalising the signing of Ipswich striker Liam Delap, who's set to snub interest from Manchester United in order to join Enzo Maresca's side for £30million Chelsea have agreed personal terms with Liam Delap on a six-year contract after beating Manchester United to his signature. Delap, 22, was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford but he's chosen to join Chelsea, where he'll work with former coach Enzo Maresca. The Ipswich striker played under Maresca during his time in Manchester City's academy and the Blues boss has used his personal touch to help get the £30million deal over the line. Chelsea's qualification for the Champions League also had an impact, with United having missed out on European football altogether. ‌ Delap will undergo a medical on Monday before signing a deal which runs until June 2031, the Athletic report. It's a relatively usual contract length for a 22-year-old compared to the ones handed out throughout Todd Boehly's cash-happy regime. ‌ Enzo Fernandez penned an eight-and-a-half-year contract when he signed for Chelsea, as did Mykhailo Mudryk. The Blues implemented this structure in order to write off the cost of a player over a longer period (the length of their contract). Delap won't break records at Chelsea, with his £30m release clause becoming active after Ipswich were relegated from the Premier League. Maresca is a big fan of the England youth international, who's set to play at the under-21 European Championship this month, and wants him to challenge Nicolas Jackson for a starting place at Stamford Bridge next season. "To compare Liam with Harry Kane and Erling Haaland, I think it's a bit early," the Chelsea manager said in April. "But for sure, in terms of style he's that kind of player. They are all real nines. They are No. 9s inside the box. ‌ "But we also have a good No. 9 [in Jackson]. He's doing well since we started. Unfortunately, we've missed him, and sometimes you need to miss players to realise how important they are for you. "With Nico, we are a completely different team compared to when he was injured. We are happy with Nico as our striker." Will Liam Delap be a success at Chelsea? Give us your prediction in the comments section. ‌ Maresca did, however, praise Jackson, who missed a chunk of the season through injury before making his return in the spring. "My perfect No.9 is exactly Nico Jackson," he added. "We already have a No. 9. It's not summer now. "If we can have a copy of Nico, it's okay. I have said many times, and you can see as well, with Nico we are a better team. Nico is the one we need. "Last season, he scored goals without penalties. This season he scored goals until he was injured. Now, hopefully he can score more goals without penalties."

Fernandes dines with 'Al-Hilal's secret agent' amid Man Utd transfer exit talks

Manchester United talisman Bruno Fernandes is the subject of huge interest from Al-Hilal and has been out dining with one of their current stars, Joao Cancelo, as he weighs up an offer Bruno Fernandes continues to be linked with a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia with Al-Hilal and has been spotted dining with Portugal pal Joao Cancelo - who has been dubbed a "secret agent" by fans as he looks to convince the Manchester United star to join him in the Middle East. Al Hilal are willing to make Fernandes one of the best-paid players in the world and will fork out £100m to sign the playmaker. Fernandes' agent Miguel Pinho has been in Riyadh for talks with senior Al Hilal individuals and those in Saudi see it as a positive sign that discussions have been held. ‌ United want to retain Fernandes, but Al Hilal believe every player has a price. The Portuguese star will turn 31 in September, but does have a contract until 2027. ‌ It has been reported that the Saudi offer will only last for so long and Al-Hilal want an answer within days. Their lucrative bid will be rescinded if they do not hear back soon, putting Fernandes and United on a timer. The United skipper has met with Al-Hilal's full-back Cancelo, formerly of Manchester City, and national team-mate with Fernandes. A snap of them at a group meal in a restaurant has seen speculation soar that a deal could be sorted within days with Cancelo playing his part. The ex-City man was 31 last Tuesday and a birthday cake with candles was presented to him at the restaurant as he celebrated at the weekend. Fernandes was by his side having made the trip back from United's post-season tour of Asia. ‌ It would be a huge loss for Ruben Amorim, who has seen his side saved by Fernandes on numerous occasions. But he believes the ex-Sporting Lisbon man wants to remain in England. He said: "Of course I am the manager, the coach, but sometimes it is the decision of the player, but of course I talk with him, I explain things and I just have that feeling. When you talk to someone, you have that feeling if he wants to stay. "Of course in a lot of games this season he was so frustrated, but he knows what we are doing. The feeling that I have every time I speak to him is he wants to continue for sure at Man Utd. But you never know." ‌ Al Hilal have also held talks about signing Cristiano Ronaldo, who will become a free agent next month if he doesn't sign a new contract at Al Nassr. He recently claimed his "chapter was over" on social media. The Saudi club expect to have at least one big-name signing and a new head coach - possibly Inter Milan's Simone Inzaghi - when they play in the Club World Cup this month.
