Broncos re-sign another in-house free agent
The Denver Broncos have re-signed fullback Michael Burton, according to a report from the Denver Post's Luca Evans. It's another one-year deal for the veteran.
Burton (5-11, 247 pounds) originally entered the league as a fifth-round draft pick out of Rutgers with the Detroit Lions in 2015. He went on to spend time with four other NFL teams before landing with the Broncos in 2023.
Used primarily as a blocker, the 33-year-old fullback has rushed 14 times for 17 yards, seven first downs and one touchdown over the last two seasons in Denver. He also has 13 receptions for 73 yards, five first downs and one score as a receiver out of the backfield.
Last season, Burton played 175 of the Broncos' offensive snaps (16%) and 294 of the special teams snaps (62%). He will likely have a similar role this fall. Denver also has tight end/fullback hybrid Nate Adkins returning for the 2025 season.
Burton's resume includes a Super Bowl win with the Kansas City Chiefs and a Pro Bowl alternate selection with the Broncos last season.

Tom Brady: Bill Belichick will prepare North Carolina players to play at 'next level'

North Carolina football made quite the splash with the hiring of Bill Belichick in December 2024, giving the six-time Super Bowl winner his first college football head coaching opportunity, past the age of 70. Now, with a little less than three weeks before the start of the Tar Heels' season, it remains to be seen what to expect from the Belichick-led Tar Heels this year. One person, however, at least has an idea of what UNC football players can expect from the first-year college football coach. Tom Brady, Belichick's quarterback from 2000-19 with the New England Patriots, believes the Tar Heels can expect to be run like an NFL-style program. "What they are going to get is obviously the most prepared, the most hardworking coach that I'd ever been around," said Brady, appearing on Fox college football analyst Joel Klatt's podcast on Monday, Aug. 11. "If you go to that school, you will be prepared to play at the next level. He's going to teach you the right fundamentals and the right techniques. He's going to have a high expectation for you and you are going to grow." It's well documented how Brady, now an NFL broadcaster for Fox and limited partner of the Las Vegas Raiders, developed from a sixth-round pick into one of the greatest NFL players ever under Belichick during their 20 seasons together in New England. The seven-time Super Bowl champion (he won one more with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020) also shared some of his thoughts on what challenges his former coach could experience in the college ranks. "I think the challenge for him is he's dealing with a lot of underdeveloped players because he's dealt with guys that are four, five, six years further along than what he's normally had to deal with," Brady said. "So I think there's probably a learning curve for him. ..." Brady also mentioned the amount of time Belichick will have with his players between games to go through film and work on their skills, considering they have to balance their workload as student-athletes. "What makes Coach Belichick so unbelievable, tactically, (is how) he can break down an opponent. He watches so much film. He's so smart in how he approaches defensive schemes and offensive schemes," Brady said. "How much can these young kids retain (that)? "That may be an interesting challenge, as well, because in some ways they're not professionals. They don't have as much time as we had as professional athletes to go in there and study film and practice and meet. They don't have that amount of time at the college level." Here's a look at Brady's appearance on Klatt's podcast: The ACC preseason poll picked UNC to finish eighth among the 17 ACC teams under Belichick this season. Moreover, the Tar Heels were neither ranked nor received votes in either of the US LBM Coaches Poll or AP Top 25's preseason rankings. UNC is set to open the Belichick era on Monday, Sept. 1 at 8 p.m. ET against TCU at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The USA TODAY app gets you to the heart of the news — fast. Jon Gruden ready for ‘truth' to come out in legal battle with NFL over leaked emails

Former head coach Jon Gruden is 'looking forward' to the 'truth' coming out over his allegations that the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell had leaked disparaging emails that Gruden had sent before his resignation as head coach of the Raiders in 2021. In a statement to ESPN, less than 24 hours after the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in his favor to prevent the league from forcing Gruden's suit into a closed-door arbitration, the Super Bowl-winning coach reiterated his claim that the league had a hand in the whole situation. 'I'm looking forward to having the truth come out, and I want to make sure what happened to me doesn't happen to anyone else,' Gruden said. Jon Gruden speaks with the media following an NFL football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Pittsburgh, Sept. 19, 2021. AP 'The league's actions disrupted the whole season,' Gruden added. 'We were leading the division at the time, and they completely blindsided me and the team.' 'What happened wasn't right and I'm glad the court didn't let the NFL cover it up,' he added in his statement. The emails in question were published by the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times in October 2021 and showed Gruden using racist, sexist and anti-gay language in messages sent to then-Commanders general manager Bruce Allen in the years before Gruden's coaching tenure in Las Vegas. The emails came up during the NFL's inquiry into the Commanders' toxic work environment, and Gruden claims they were leaked to force him to resign as head coach of the Raiders, something he eventually did. Jon Gruden watches the Detroit Lions training camp with former Monday Night Football and current NBC announcer Mike Tirico at Meijer Performance Center. Lon Horwedel-Imagn Images ESPN reported the league will next petition the Nevada Supreme Court for a rehearing. If that fails, the NFL would then appeal to the United States Supreme Court. The Nevada Supreme Court ruled in Gruden's favor in a 5-2 decision, but the court did not determine the merits of Gruden's legal claims, only making the call on the NFL's attempt to push the case into a private arbitration.

NFL Fan Base Announces Boycott Over Male Cheerleader Announcement

NFL Fan Base Announces Boycott Over Male Cheerleader Announcement originally appeared on The Spun. Some NFL fans are not happy that there will be male cheerleaders on the field during the 2025 season. The Minnesota Vikings will have a pair of male cheerleaders on the field during the 2025 season. The Vikings, who are expected to contend at the top of the NFC in 2025, made the announcement on social media. Unsurprisingly, it has been going viral. "The Minnesota #Vikings Cheerleaders have two male cheerleaders for the 2025 season," ML Football shared on X. "The team announced Blaize Shiek and Louie Conn have joined their dancing squad for the season." While many are praising the Minnesota Vikings for being inclusive - they are hardly the first NFL franchise to have male cheerleaders (the Rams had some in the Super Bowl - the announcement is sparking a lot of reaction. Some fans have announced that they would cancel their season tickets or boycott the team in response. "The Minnesota Vikings has a man as their new lead cheerleader. As if you needed another reason to avoid the NFL and Minnesota," one fan wrote. "This might be the dumbest move in NFL history. First male captains of a cheer squad… and talk of an all-male cheerleading division? Yeah, something smells off here," one fan added. "I'm done with this team," one fan added. One right-wing radio host spoke out on X, too. 'Imagine you buy front row season football tickets and when you sit down there's some man girating right in front of you,' Owen Shroyer wrote. Outsports had more on the situation: "Last season, seven teams had a total of 18 men on their cheer squads. Some are gay, some are bi, some are straight. The Carolina Panthers also had a trans cheerleader. I don't know how Shiek and Conn of the Vikings identify since I haven't asked, but male cheerleaders are so common that only someone with real insecurity issues would feel bothered by their presence. I also am bothered by Shiek and Conn — by their agility, gracefulness, athleticism and ability to dance, let alone their great hair. How can I expect to focus on J.J. McCarthy throwing deep to Justin Jefferson when these two attractive dudes distract me?" The Vikings are scheduled to open the year on a big stage, taking on the Chicago Bears on ESPN's "Monday Night Football." Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. E.T. on Monday, Sept. 8.
