Former
Indian cricket
player
Ravichandran Ashwin
has voiced his concerns about the exclusion of
Shreyas Iyer
and
Yashasvi Jaiswal
from the Asia Cup squad.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (
BCCI
) has announced a 15-member team for the upcoming tournament, which begins September 9 in the UAE.
"Selection is a thankless job. You have to let someone out. When you talk to them, you have to go through that sadness and disappointment in their faces. I hope, someone has talked to Shreyas and Jaiswal," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel "Ash Ki Baat".
Iyer, who successfully led Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024, was not selected, along with young opener Jaiswal.

"When you have Jaiswal as your third opener, you have brought
Shubman Gill
in the team by removing a person from the World Cup winning squad. I mean, I am happy for Shubman but I am very, very sad for both Shreyas and Jaiswal. It's just not fair on both," Ashwin added.
"Look at the credentials of Shreyas Iyer. He went out of the team. But came in the Champions Trophy and did amazing batting. He won and gave it to you. If the answer is that Shubman Gill is in blasting form, Shreyas Iyer is also in high-quality form.

Jaiswal's innings on a tricky pitch in the last game in the Oval... he is also in cracking form. So, how can you give an answer for this? What Shreyas has done wrong... he did brilliantly well for KKR, made them win.
He was sent into the auction. He then took Punjab to the finals for the first time since 2014. He overcame the short ball problem. He was hitting the likes of Kagiso Rabada and
Jasprit Bumrah
with ease in the IPL. I am just extremely sad for him and Yashasvi Jaiswal; it is extremely unfair."
Iyer has represented India in 51 T20Is, scoring 1104 runs with an average of 30.66 and a strike rate of 136.12.
His last T20I appearance was against Australia in December 2023.
Iyer's IPL leadership record includes guiding Delhi Capitals to the playoffs in 2019 and their first final in 2020, before leading KKR to victory last year.
Former India assistant coach
Abhishek Nayar
has also criticized the selection decision.
"I can't fathom or understand what reason could justify Shreyas Iyer not being part of the 20-member squad," Nayar told JioHotstar.
"I'm not even talking about the final 15, but the 20 itself, which sends a clear message, that Shreyas Iyer is not in the selectors' scheme of things, at least from a T20 perspective."
Nayar suggests that Gill's appointment as vice-captain indicates future leadership plans.
"This squad announcement sort of tells you the mindset of the selectors. With selection of Shubman, in time, he is going to be an all-format captain, and that's where they are sort of positioning him.
Great pick, terrific player. I'm sure he's going to follow the mindset of being attacking, having that approach. And I feel it's going to be a very, very interesting next 12 months in Shubman Gill's life," he explained.
The selection committee has included pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah despite recent workload concerns, with a West Indies series approaching in early October.
"We all need to understand that Bumrah is a prized asset. He is the difference between winning and not winning a championship, and that must be respected," Nayar said.
"His workload and his body must be respected, because when you don't have him in crucial matches, the impact is massive. Whatever the plan is, no one knows it better than Bumrah himself. He'll be the best judge of what his body can handle and can communicate that with the selectors and team management. Knowing him and having spent time with him, I can tell you nothing matters more to him than performing well and winning championships for India.

Kuldeep Yadav Loses Places In ICC ODI Bowling Rankings, Only Other Indian In Top 10 Is...

India wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav has slipped to third place in the latest ICC ODI rankings for bowlers released on Wednesday with South African tweaker Kehsav Maharaj reclaiming the top position. Maharaj regained the top position after helping his team beat Australia by 98 runs in the first ODI of their three-match series in Cairns. The 35-year-old left-arm spinner, who was named Player of the Match after grabbing five for 33, overtook Kuldeep and Sri Lanka's Maheesh Theekshana to the top spot, which he had earlier held briefly in November and December 2023. Apart from Kuldeep, Ravindra Jadeja is the only Indian bowler who is in the top 10 in the updated list. The Indian team has not played an ODI match since their title triumph in the Champions Trophy. West Indies fast bowler Jayden Seales was another one to make huge inroads in the bowling rankings after his superb haul of six for 18 in the final game of their three-match series against Pakistan, moving up 15 spots to 18th position. Pakistan leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed (up 15 places to joint-39th) and West Indies off-spinner Roston Chase (up five places to 58th) are others to move up the list. In the men's batting rankings, Shubman Gill continues to top the list with 784 points, with Shreyas Iyer being the other Indian in the top 10 at sixth position. West Indies captain Shai Hope is up two places to ninth position after scoring 120 not out in the final ODI against Pakistan while Aiden Markram (up four places to 21st), Temba Bavuma (up five places to 23rd) and Mitchell Marsh (up six places to 48th) are the others to progress. In the men's T20I rankings, India's Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma remained on the top two places with skipper Suryakumar Yadav in the sixth spot and Yashasvi Jaiswal in 10th position. South Africa's Dewald Brevis continues his upward movement, gaining nine spots to reach 12th position while Australians Marsh and Glenn Maxwell have progressed four and 10 spots, respectively, to reach 25th and 30th positions. The T20I bowling rankings see Australia seamers Nathan Ellis (up three places to ninth position) and Josh Hazlewood (up two places to 18th) make significant gains, with South Africa fast bowler Kagiso Rabada moving up from 44th to 37th position.

Shreyas Iyer narrative not dictated by BCCI's 'bad Asia Cup signal, lack of clarity': He will return for T20 World Cup

Despite his stellar performances in the 2025 IPL season, where he led his team to the final for the second straight year, and his heroics in the Champions Trophy, Shreyas Iyer was shockingly left out of India's Asia Cup squad for the tournament beginning September 9 in the UAE. However, former India cricketer Aakash Chopra "strongly feels" that the BCCI's shaky stance is unlikely to remain unchanged, backing Iyer for a return ahead of the T20 World Cup next year. Shreyas Iyer was not picked for the Asia Cup Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra admitted that Iyer could perhaps have done more to push for selection in the Asia Cup squad, but maintained that the star batter will be back in the reckoning for the World Cup at home. India will play five T20Is after the Asia Cup — against Australia and then South Africa at home — and the former Kolkata Knight Riders batter felt Iyer will use those fixtures to strengthen his case for a World Cup berth. 'Shreyas Iyer not being there is a big story. What more will Shreyas Iyer have to do? What more can you do than what you have already done? You had a 600-plus run IPL season, took the team to the final, scored runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, played Ranji, and won the Champions Trophy. That's all you can do as a human being,' he said. 'This is the Asia Cup team. Don't attach the World Cup with it because there are 15 T20Is after this. The world changes in 15 T20Is. If he keeps scoring runs in ODIs, sooner or later, Shreyas Iyer will be part of the team. I have a strong feeling that Shreyas Iyer will be a part of India's T20 World Cup team,' he added. Chopra, however, admitted he was baffled at Iyer not being picked even as a reserve batter for the Asia Cup, saying it neither sent a "great signal" nor offered any clarity about his future in the format. 'Shreyas' name is not even there in the five reserves, and that is surprising. It's understandable that you couldn't have him in the 15 as you can't play him in the XI, and you wanted lower-order batters as backup, where Shivam Dube is there, and Rinku Singh will be given another chance, which is absolutely par for the course,' he said. 'However, a place could have been created in the reserve players at least, where you have kept Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Prasidh Krishna. This player's name could have been there. You haven't kept it there either, and that doesn't send a great signal. The clarity in front of Shreyas' name is completely not there,' Chopra observed.

PKL Season 12: Puneri Paltan aim to reclaim the title with core and strengthened squad

Pune: Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 champions Puneri Paltan will be keen to get their hands on the prestigious PKL title once Season 12 commences on August 29. Puneri Paltan have been one of the most consistent teams in the league, having reached the Playoffs in six out of the 11 editions. However, they finished a disappointing eighth last season with just nine wins in 22 games. Ahead of Season 12, Puneri Paltan announced former Indian kabaddi captain Ajay Thakur as their head coach. The 39-year-old has been promoted to the role of head coach after he was appointed as their assistant coach in Season 11. Widely regarded as one of the greatest kabaddi players of all time, Ajay was part of the Indian kabaddi team that won gold medals at the 2014 Asian Games and the 2016 Kabaddi World Cup. He was awarded the Padma Shri and the Arjuna Award in 2019. Having featured in the first seven editions of the Pro Kabaddi League as a player, Ajay ended his illustrious PKL career with 816 points in 121 matches, including 794 raid points and 22 tackle points. Meanwhile, Puneri Paltan appointed Ashok Shinde as the head strategist for the upcoming season. He was earlier named their head coach in the middle of last season after BC Ramesh stepped down. Despite missing out on a Playoffs spot last campaign, Puneri Paltan decided to retain most of their players for the forthcoming season. Additionally, the Season 10 winners added eight new players at the PKL Season 12 Player Auction to assemble a formidable squad for a total amount of INR 5 crore. With that in mind, let's have a closer look at Puneri Paltan's strengths and weaknesses ahead of Pro Kabaddi Season 12. Strengths One of Puneri Paltan's undeniable strengths heading into PKL Season 12 is their strong raiding unit. Ahead of PKL Season 12 Player Auction, Puneri Paltan ensured they retained Pankaj Mohite, who was their standout raider last season with 110 raid points in 22 matches. Furthermore, they managed to retain their experienced raider, Mohit Goyat, who contributed 83 raid points in 19 games last season. Puneri Paltan have also retained their captain, Aslam Inamdar, who will once again play a key role in their attack. Earlier, in Season 11, Puneri Paltan lost momentum after their skipper Aslam was ruled out due to a knee injury. Later, at the Season 12 Player Auction, Puneri Paltan further strengthened their attack by acquiring the services of star raider Sachin Tanwar for INR 1.058 crore. Considered to be one of the top raiders in the league, Sachin has already accumulated 1,034 raid points in 145 matches in his stellar PKL career. Puneri Paltan have also signed Iranian raiders Mohammad Esmaeil Nabibakhsh (INR 13 lacs), Milad Mohajer (INR 13.50 lacs) and Indian raider Stuwart Singh (INR 13 lacs) to reinforce their raiding department. Weaknesses While Puneri Paltan's attack looks strong on paper, their defence could be a potential weakness in Pro Kabaddi Season 12. Even though they managed to retain their star right cover Abinesh Nadarajan ahead of PKL Season 12 Player Auction, they failed to sign any backup for Abinesh in the right cover position. Hence, any injury or loss in form for Abinesh could risk their chances of success in the upcoming season. Apart from Vishal Bhardwaj and Gaurav Khatri, Puneri Paltan lack well-established defenders in their corner positions. Despite racking up 324 tackle points in 118 matches, Vishal will make a return to Pro Kabaddi after he went unsold in the Season 11 Player Auction. It will be interesting to see how Vishal performs after being out of the auction for one full season. As a result, a lot will depend on the right corner, Gaurav Khatri, who was their standout defender last season with 61 tackle points in 21 games. Opportunities As far as opportunities are concerned, Puneri Paltan have several talented youngsters who will be aiming to hog the limelight in PKL Season 12. All-rounder Mohd Amaan is one such player who will be looking to grab his opportunities after Puneri Paltan used their Final Bid Match (FBM) card to retain him for two seasons for INR 35 lacs. Playing in the left corner position, Amaan showcased his talent and played 14 matches for Puneri Paltan in Season 11. On the other hand, Ajay Thakur will have the opportunity to repay Puneri Paltan's faith after being promoted as head coach of the Pune-based team. In his short stint as assistant coach, the former Indian kabaddi star got the best out of Puneri Paltan in the few matches he guided them through last season. Threats One of the biggest concerns for Puneri Paltan will be the fitness of their captain, Aslam Inamdar. Star all-rounder Aslam will make a comeback in Pro Kabaddi Season 12 after missing the majority of last season. The 25-year-old played seven games in Season 11 and was later ruled out after he suffered a meniscus tear in his knee, which required a surgical operation. With 480 raid points and 65 tackle points in 70 games, Aslam's numbers are pretty impressive, and hence his fitness will determine how Puneri Paltan's upcoming campaign pans out. One potential area where Puneri Paltan could perhaps have done better during the Season 12 Player Auction was to sign another quality right cover. The PKL Season 10 champions currently only have Abinesh Nadarajan in the right cover position. While Vishal Bhardwaj has decent experience in Pro Kabaddi, his performances have dipped over the last few seasons. The likes of Mohd Amaan and Rakesh will need to step in at the left corner position to provide support to the right corner, Gaurav Khatri.
