Two teens from Scarborough are facing charges after police say they seized drugs and a firearm in their car after they collided with a moose.
Anishinabek Police say that they, along with provincial police and the Britt & Area Fire Department, were called to Highway 69 in Wallbridge Township, Ont., on Saturday. They say nobody was injured in the collision.
'Ater detecting a strong odour of fresh burnt cannabis emanating from the vehicle, officers searched the vehicle and occupants, as allowed under the Cannabis Control Act,' officials said in a release.
Following their search, police say they seized 250 grams of suspected fentanyl, 33 grams of cannabis—not in its original packaging—and one handgun with an extended magazine, as well as 16 rounds of ammunition.
Officers say one teen concealed the gun in their waistband, adding the firearm had no manual safety or anything else to physically prevent the gun from unintentionally firing.
Two 16-year-old boys are now facing a variety of drug and firearm-related charges, including possession of a schedule 1 substance of the purpose of trafficking. Their identities are protected under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the charges have not been tested in court.
'This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by first responders on a daily basis,' Deputy Chief Julie Craddock said in a release. 'I'm grateful that both suspects were taken into custody without harm to public safety.'

Ottawa residents among 8 arrested after $2.5 million worth of drugs, firearms seized during shooting investigation
Drugs and firearms seized in a major drug bust across eastern Ontario and Quebec this week. (OPP/Provided) Eight people are facing charges, including two residents of Ottawa, after a major drug bust this week connected to the investigation of a shooting in Petawawa, Ont. last March. Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) say search warrants were executed at various locations in eastern Ontario and Quebec on Thursday. The investigation has led to a total of 47 offences, police announced in a news release Saturday. The suspects include two residents of Ottawa, two residents of Pembroke, two from Gatineau and one from Bryson, Que. The charges range from drug and firearms possession, to trafficking and theft. The drugs include meth, fentanyl and cocaine. Four suspects are also facing a charge of conspiracy to commit murder. Police say the street value of the items found is valued to be more than $2.5 million. (OPP/Provided) On March 22, police were called to an apartment building on Wolfe Avenue in the Petawawa after getting reports of a firearm being discharged in the hallway. No injuries were reported in the incident. 'The investigation later revealed that the residence, which was occupied by a family, was mistakenly targeted,' police said in a news release Saturday. The shooter reportedly left on foot and has been at large since. The alleged shooter is believed to be in the Montreal area. Police consider him to be armed and a potential risk to public safety. OPP did not provide more specifics on the connection between the drug bust and the shooting. Police continue to search for public assistance in the case to locate the suspect at-large suspect. Social Sharing Eight people are facing charges that include drug trafficking and conspiracy to commit murder as part of an investigation into gunfire earlier this year at a Petawawa, Ont., apartment building. Ontario Provincial Police officers were called to the Wolfe Avenue building on March 22 after getting a report someone had fired a gun in the hallway. In a news release Saturday, OPP said their investigation revealed the shooter had targeted the wrong residence. No one was injured, they added. While that suspect remains on the loose, eight other people were arrested after police executed search warrants in Ontario and Quebec on June 5, OPP said. Major drug seizure The warrants resulted in a major illegal drug haul, with police seizing more than 12 kilograms of fentanyl, more than 15 kilograms of cocaine and roughly 17,000 methamphetamine tablets. Officers also seized quantities of other drugs, OPP said, along with one real and two fake handguns, ammunition, cash and jewelry. The eight people charged range in age from 20 to 63. Most are from either eastern Ontario or western Quebec. Four of the accused have been charged with conspiracy to commit murder. Police have also laid numerous drug and weapons trafficking charges. Some face as few as two counts, while one of the accused, a 44-year-old man from Gatineau, Que, has been charged with 23 offences. All but one of the eight remained in custody as of Friday, OPP said.
