New on Disney Plus in July 2025 — all the new must-watch movies and shows

US Open 2025: Althea Gibson Comic Book Part Of Free Revamped Fan Week
The 2025 U.S. Open will feature a Marvel comic book giveaway celebrating Althea Gibson and the Fantastic Four as part of a broader fan experience that includes concerts, new mixed doubles, kid's day and qualifying round action. Most of these fan-friendly activities are free and part of the U.S. Open's revamped Fan Week. "It's all about, how can we expand and extend the U.S. Open and interest to other new audiences," said Nicole Kankam, USTA Head of Marketing and Entertainment. 'So you can come onto the grounds, for free, just walk in, watch some great tennis content, see the qualifying tournament, see players practice." Last year, the U.S. Open collaborated with Marvel to produce 15,000 comic books featuring Carlos Alcaraz, Jessica Pegula, Naomi Osaka, and other tennis stars as Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Marvel is part of the vast Disney empire, which includes ESPN, the U.S. Open's domestic broadcast partner. The 2025 U.S. Open theme is '75 Years of Breaking Barriers,' which honors the anniversary of Gibson becoming the first Black person to play at the U.S. Lawn Tennis Championships (now the U.S. Open). The 2024 comic book collaboration was so popular that this year the U.S. Open is giving away 40,000 comic books. To get a comic book, you need to sign up for the Fan Access Pass, a free app. 'We also want to make sure that people aren't coming and taking like, 20 comic books themselves,' said Kankam. 'So once you redeem your fan access pass, that's your ability to retrieve one comic book. And with the Fan Access Pass, you can do other things too. You can have a chance to win other prizes.' The Althea Gibson Marvel comic book giveaway comes a few days after Disney and Marvel Studios released The Fantastic Four: First Steps movie. The comic book's story is set at the U.S. Open and weaves Gibson's biography and accomplishments into the Fantastic Four's adventures. "The really exciting thing about this whole collaboration and having givin us an opportunity to tell Althea stories," said Kankam. "Althea's estate, her family, loves it. . . her niece was moved to tears after reading the story, and so they've really embraced it and been a part of it." US Open Offers Free Access To Arthur Ashe Stadium Arthur Ashe stadium is the U.S. Open's largest show court and the most expensive ticket during main draw play. But during Fan Week, visitors to Flushing Meadows can enter Ashe, for free. Ashe will be open to the public throughout Fan Week, beginning Monday, August 18 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fans can watch top singles players practice while getting a feel for the atmosphere in the largest tennis stadium in the world. The top-seeded players get more access to show courts for practice. During Fan Week, you can watch top players on Ashe, Louis Armstrong Stadium and many of the outer courts. Fan Week is probably the best chance tennis fans have of seeing top players up close without spending hundreds or thousands for court side or clubhouse seats. The qualifying rounds get underway and are also free during Fan Week. The single-elimination format of the qualifying rounds can prove more intense than matches in the main draw. This year, 2019 U.S. Open champion Bianca Andreescu will be competing in qualifying. New US Open Mixed Doubles Format The 2025 U.S. Open debuts the controversial new mixed doubles format, perhaps the hottest ticket during Fan Week. The two-day mixed doubles championship precedes the rest of the tournament and will feature pairings of popular singles players and doubles specialists. Alcaraz is teaming up with Emma Raducanu. Jannik Sinner will play with Emma Navarro. Venus Williams will partner with Reilly Opelka. The controversy centers on using singles players' rankings instead of doubles to seed pairings. Many doubles specialists, who depend on Major tournaments for the bulk of their annual income, voiced opposition to the new format. Katarina Siniakova, winner of ten Grand Slam doubles titles and one Major mixed doubles trophy, failed to qualify for mixed doubles under the new format and had to apply for a wildcard. In an interview with Canal+ Czechia, a Czech video streaming platform, Siniakova said, 'When two world No. 1s in doubles don't get into the tournament, there's probably nothing more to say about it. Sinner and Alcaraz, who rarely play doubles, received direct entry, but defending mixed doubles champions Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori, and No. 1-ranked women's doubles player, Taylor Townsend, needed a wildcard. Martina Navratilova, winner of ten mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, posted her disapproval on X. 'It's an exhibition and I am fine with that. Shame for the people who specialize in doubles and mixed and many will miss out on the opportunity to play and make some good money. I hope it's not counted as a real tournament." 'How can it count when it is an exhibition where highly ranked doubles players who don't get a chance to play at all? That is just wrong. Makes a mockery of the title…just imo.' The draw might look different next week. With the mixed doubles starting a day after the Cincinnati Open ends, some top-ranked players may withdraw, making this experiment more problematic. The revamped mixed doubles will be played in best-of-three sets (of four games) and will award $1 million in prize money to the winning team. You must be an adult to register for the Fan Access Pass and provide your name and email address. Fans are allowed access to the Billie Jean King Center without the Fan Access Pass, but for the whole experience and the comic book, you'll need to register for the pass. Enhancing Fan Week has transformed the U.S. Open into a three-week event that caters to a diverse audience, including avid tennis fans, celebrities, high rollers, and casual watchers alike.

MARVEL ZOMBIES Creeps Up With a New, Earlier Release Date and Hardcore TV-MA Rating — GeekTyrant
Get ready, horror-loving MCU fans. Marvel Zombies is crawling out of the grave earlier than expected and it's bringing a gnarly, blood-soaked bite with it. Marvel Animation's twisted What If...? spin-off officially premieres on Disney+ this September 24, moving up from its original Halloween-season drop. So, the four-episode undead thrill ride is just around the corner, and it's coming in hot with a TV-MA rating that promises no holds barred. Collider recently spoke with Bryan Andrews, the show's director and executive producer, who revealed that Marvel Zombies was originally envisioned as a full-length feature film. "We were thinking it'd be a movie, if like, 'Ooh, we should release it as a movie.' We should just do a movie," he said. "But there were some things that came up, certain issues that we just had to kind of, 'Oh let's break it. We'll have to break it up into four episodes.'" Even though it ended up as a mini-series, Andrews still treats it like one complete, intense narrative. "So basically it's like a four-episode mini-event, like a film broke up into four parts, basically. It's one story. It's one throughline. A lot of insanity happens." The show holds nothing back in terms of violence and gore, earning its R-rated feel. Andrews elaborated on what fans can expect from that TV-MA label. "We did try not to be gratuitous about [language], but there's like, a couple key parts where someone does say something because it just fits. Like that's what I would say in that moment," he explained. "So, I think the rating comes from the level of violence and or intensity of the moments that the characters find themselves in. And yeah, blood gets spilled, and we want to be able to see that." While zombie hype isn't quite where it was during The Walking Dead 's heyday, Marvel Zombies is set to give the genre a badass superhero twist. If you remember the undead chaos in What If...? , you know this isn't going to be your average apocalypse. Returning to their MCU roles are Elizabeth Olsen ( Scarlet Witch ), Awkwafina ( Katy ), David Harbour ( Red Guardian ), Simu Liu ( Shang-Chi ), Randall Park ( Jimmy Woo ), Florence Pugh ( Yelena Belova ), Hailee Steinfeld ( Hawkeye ), Dominique Thorne ( Ironheart ), Iman Vellani ( Ms. Marvel ), Hudson Thames ( Spider-Man ), and Todd Williams in a currently undisclosed role. The show is directed by Andrews, with a script written by Zeb Wells. Executive producers include Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Brad Winderbaum, Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt, Wells, and Andrews. Danielle Costa and Carrie Wassenaar serve as producers. Marvel Zombies is creeping up fast, just in time to kick off the spooky season with bloody superhero mayhem.

X-MEN ‘97 Showrunner Claims Kevin Feige 'Resented' the Animated Series' Success — GeekTyrant
The creative clash behind Marvel's X-Men '97 just got a whole lot messier. According to former showrunner Beau DeMayo, X-Men '97 may have been a hit with fans, but it was also a sore spot for Kevin Feige, the architect of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. In a passionate and candid series of social media posts, DeMayo didn't hold back as he detailed why he believes the MCU is struggling creatively and how his own animated project stirred up resentment at the top of Marvel Studios. Despite being fired by Marvel ahead of X-Men '97 's premiere, with the studio citing 'egregious' behavior and severing all ties following an internal investigation, DeMayo insists his criticisms stem from genuine creative frustration, not spite. "Remember, I was told by a TOP exec at Marvel last year that Kevin resented my work and the show because FANS like you were using it as a referendum on how Kevin's MCU is failing." According to DeMayo, Feige and his close circle (referred to as 'the Parliament') didn't appreciate how much X-Men '97 resonated with fans, especially since it was outside their control. 'I was told this in a phone call after Ep 5 premiered. I asked the exec if Kevin was happy, because stupidly I still wanted to help the studio out. There response was a long pause, and then I was told that he'd be 'happier' if fans and audiences weren't using it as a referendum on what the MCU needs to be doing to fix itself. 'What makes it worse I think is that Kevin has nothing to do with #xmen97 and could take no credit for it. Even internally, before the show aired, Marvel employees were reaching out to me asking how I was able to make a show this good given where the studio was, and how it's the best thing the studio had done. With their praise I noticed more and more that I was becoming a threat and regret to studio leadership.' DeMayo claimed Feige was annoyed that people were holding the animated show up as an example of what the MCU should be, a franchise that takes canon seriously and focuses on character-driven storytelling. 'Kevin is introducing new concepts like adamantium and mutant Ms Marvel while simultaneously recycling old Fox characters all before telling us they're going to reboot everything anyways? Like, what the f*ck?' DeMayo also alleges that Marvel leadership downplayed the success of the series and actively tried to erase his contributions. 'Instead of looking at what my team and I did and learning to replicate our focus on canon and deep character work, they smeared me, tactically threatened the crew not to speak out while continuing to still abuse them, and have done everything to act like #xmen97 wasn't a hit.' He pointed to the absence of Feige and Marvel exec Louis D'Esposito at the X-Men '97 premiere as another example of the studio's lack of support. 'They didn't show up to thank the fans. They didn't show up to thank @xmentas, the Lewalds and Houston or the OG voice cast, for how they built that foundation back in the 90s of the MCU. Nope, we were just a little cartoon that wasn't sexy enough or taken seriously enough to warrant that great Kevin Feige to attend.' Despite the personal controversy surrounding DeMayo's exit, which includes disturbing allegations of inappropriate behavior, there's no denying that X-Men '97 struck a nerve with longtime Marvel fans in a way recent live-action MCU projects haven't. Even Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds have acknowledged the show's impact. 'Sorry, that was #xmen97, and even Ryan Reynolds has acknowledged it. Sadly, Kevin Fiege and his sycophants hated that what I created with my team was getting all the praise it did.' DeMayo ended his commentary with a call for Marvel to return to storytelling rooted in the comics and characters, not just celebrity cameos and box office hype. 'There's no talk of the actual heroes or characters or story, because Kevin and his brood are just Star-fucking at this point hoping it'll earn dollars at the box office.' It's still unclear how Marvel Studios plans to reboot the X-Men for the MCU. With X-Men '97 set to return for Season 2, though without DeMayo, the pressure is on for Feige and company to deliver something that meets fan expectations. Until then, the legacy o f X-Men '97 is now tangled in behind-the-scenes drama and questions about Marvel's direction. DeMayo may be out of the picture, but his criticisms are echoing through the fandom, challenging the studio to prove it hasn't lost its way.
