Kedah immigration detains 29 immigrants in raid, employers under probe for document negligence

SUNGAI PETANI: Twenty-nine undocumented migrants, including two children, were detained during a targeted operation by the Immigration Department across five locations here today.
Among those detained in the raids were workers at a plywood processing factory in Bedong, where officers nabbed 20 foreigners, including two Indonesian toddlers aged between 12 months and 3 years.
Initial investigations found that several of the detainees did not possess valid passports or travel documents. Others had overstayed their visas, with some claiming that their employers had failed to renew their documents or provide any guidance on the renewal process.
One 25-year-old Indonesian woman, who was arrested alongside her 30-year-old husband, said they had been living in Malaysia since 2022 with expired passports.
"Our documents have not been valid for over two years. We've been hiding here, unable to leave the premises. I haven't dared to go out. I would ask others to buy essentials for me," she said when met.
Their 3-year-old daughter, born in Malaysia, has no legal documentation, while their 10-year-old child remains in Indonesia.
Another woman from Indonesia, said her husband had entered the country illegally via Bukit Kayu Hitam through a syndicate. They have been staying in Malaysia for over two years with their 1-year-old child.
"My husband entered with his brother, but his brother has since passed away. Our documents are no longer valid," she claimed.
Kedah Immigration director Mohd Ridzzuan Mohd Zain confirmed that 29 undocumented migrants were detained in the series of raids, and five employers have been called in to assist in investigations.
Those detained include 14 Myanmar men, five Bangladeshi men, three Indonesian men, three Myanmar women and two Indonesian women, and two Indonesian children.
"All of the adult immigrants detained are aged are in their 20s and 40s.
"They were detained under Section 6(1)(c) and Section 15(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, as well as Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963," he said.
He added that the employers could face action under Section 56(1)(d) for harbouring undocumented migrants, Section 55E for allowing such individuals on their premises, and Section 55B for employing foreigners without valid permits.
"Employer negligence in regularising the status of their foreign workers will not be tolerated. We will now adopt a stricter approach against employers who fail to take responsibility for their workers' legal status," said Ridzzuan.

Fisherman fined RM10,000 for bribing maritime officer

ALOR STAR: A fisherman was fined RM10,000 by the Sessions Court here after pleading guilty to an alternative charge of attempting to bribe a senior officer from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA). Jamri Abdul Razak, 28, made the guilty plea before Judge N, Priscilla Hemalini, today. He settled the fine immediately. According to the facts of the case, Jamri had offered RM5,000 in cash to a senior assistant director from the agency on June 22, 2022. The bribe was intended as an inducement for the officer to release seven undocumented migrants who had been detained under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63 for entering and remaining in Malaysia without valid passes or permits. The offence was committed at the Kedah/Perlis MMEA office in Langkawi. The offence falls under Section 214 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 10 years, or a fine or both, if convicted. The prosecution was handled by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Mohd Zulfadli Azharudin, while the accused was unrepresented. The court also ordered the RM5,000 in bribe money to be forfeited to the government through the MACC.

Sarawak GOF seizes smuggled goods, illegal timber worth RM4.85mil

KUCHING: The General Operations Force (GOF) has foiled a slew of cross-border crime, including smuggling and illegal logging between August 1 and 16, seizing RM4.85mil in goods. Sarawak brigade commander SAC Lim Bak Phai said that on August 1, Sibu Battalion 10 arrested a 42-year-old Indonesian man for suspected involvement in illegal logging activities in Sibu. "The raid led to the seizure of 100 logs, a wood cutting machine and an excavator with an estimated value of RM1.6mil. "On August 4, two local men were arrested in Sibu for smuggling 46,000 litres of diesel using three vehicles, including a tanker trailer. The seizures included various oil-related equipment with a total value of RM1.26 million," he said in a statement here on Monday (Aug 18). Lim said on Saturday, a trawler was detained in Sungai Kemena, Bintulu, carrying 5,000 litres of diesel without a valid permit, estimated at RM512,950. A 34-year-old local man was arrested. "In addition, several attempts to smuggle frozen food products were also foiled by GOF, including a case on August 4 in Tebedu involving the seizure of 202 boxes of frozen food worth RM371,600. He added that a location in Serian was raided, with frozen chicken worth RM223,320 seized. The GOF also foiled the smuggling of onions worth RM322,300 and rice worth RM183,000 in Biawak and 50 boxes of frozen food in Tebedu worth RM140,000, which did not have valid documents. Two foreign nationals detained at KLIA for illegal entry attempt

SEPANG: Two foreign nationals were detained at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminal 2 yesterday afternoon after failing to provide valid entry records. The Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) stated that the men, aged between 30 and 40, were from India and China. They were stopped during immigration checks around 5 pm when officers noticed suspicious security stamps on their passports. Further checks through the MyIMMs system confirmed no entry or exit records for both individuals. 'Ironically, the stamps on their passports indicated entry via Bukit Kayu Hitam ICQS in Kedah and Sultan Abu Bakar ICQS in Johor,' said AKPS. Both suspects were detained under reasonable suspicion of violating the Immigration Act 1959/63. They are currently held at the KLIA Terminal 2 Immigration Depot pending further investigation. The case has been handed over to the Selangor Immigration Enforcement Division. AKPS is investigating possible syndicate involvement and warned of disciplinary action against any complicit officers. - Bernama
