One lakh women to be trained, employed before Onam
Announcing the campaign at the Kerala Institute of Local Administration at Mulankunnathukavu on Saturday, Local Self-Governments Minister M.B. Rajesh said the campaign was designed to bring women out of the confines of their homes and lead them toward economic independence, social recognition, and self-esteem. The decentralised employment drive aims at training and giving placements to one lakh women by Onam, combining skill development, job matching, and grassroots mobilisation.
A replicable model
'This project is not just about jobs, it's about liberation,' said Mr. Rajesh. 'It's about bringing women into the heart of the economy. Just as the Literacy Movement and People's Planning once set benchmarks for social transformation, this campaign too is poised to become another replicable model from Kerala. It can usher in a new era of socio-economic progress,' the Minister said.
Only 20% of employable women in the State are currently employed outside their homes. 'Our target is to raise that to 50% in the coming years and this campaign is the first big step,' said T.M. Thomas Isaac, Chief Advisor of Vigyan Kerala.
Targeting women who took career breaks due to family responsibilities, the campaign offers custom-designed skill development programmes at the local level. Kudumbashree and Vigyan Kerala will partner with agencies like ASAP, KASE, and other accredited skill development institutions to deliver training. Local Self-Government Institutions (LSGIs) are expected to integrate project plans into their July budgets, ensuring funding for the project.
Job fairs at local bodies
A review meeting of Local Self-Government institutions presidents and secretaries chaired by Mr. Rajesh from July 3–5 at KILA finalised the operational blueprint. Implementation units will be set up at the State and district Kudumbashree missions with support from Vigyan Kerala. Job fairs will be held through July and August across all blocks, municipalities, and Corporations.
A key component of the campaign is to challenge the social stigma associated with housewives seeking employment, said Mr. Isaac. 'Women often stay away from jobs not because of lack of talent or qualification, but due to lack of exposure, support, and opportunities. This campaign will change that,' he said.
Women above 30 years
Each type of job will be backed by tailored training programmes at the local level, including soft skills and digital literacy. Special focus will be given to women above 30 years — a group often sidelined in conventional job schemes.
District-wise Vigyan Councils led by Ministers have already been formed, with plans to establish similar councils at the block and panchayat levels in July. Kudumbashree CDS units will map local job demands and identify women suitable for each sector.
'This campaign is the way ahead for Kudumbashree as it marks 25 years – adding wage-linked empowerment to their successful self-employment model,' the Minister said. 'It will create significant social and economic momentum and impact Kerala's GDP,' he added.

Businessman alleges Kerala CPM secretary's son leaked his confidential complaint
The Kerala CPM has been hit by a fresh controversy after a Chennai-based businessman alleged that Shyam, son of state secretary M.V. Govindan, was involved in leaking a confidential complaint submitted to the party's Politburo. The businessman, Muhammad Sharshad, said he had submitted a complaint disclosing alleged illegal financial transactions involving certain CPM leaders. According to him, the documents attached to his petition were leaked and later surfaced as evidence in a defamation case filed by London-based businessman Rajesh Krishna. Sharshad claimed that Shyam was responsible for passing on the documents to Rajesh, possibly under pressure. The businessman further alleged that despite his repeated representations, the party leadership ignored his complaint. He noted that while Rajesh was invited to attend the CPM party congress in Madurai, he was eventually asked to stay away after Sharshad raised objections. In his letter to the Politburo, Sharshad accused Rajesh of transferring unaccounted funds to the bank accounts of CPM leaders. Following the leak, Rajesh approached the Delhi High Court with a defamation suit, asserting that false allegations had been circulated against him. Speaking to media persons on Sunday, Sharshad said that both the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Income Tax Department are now probing his complaint into the alleged illegal financial transfers from Rajesh Krishna's accounts. He alleged that Rajesh used his leaked complaint to strengthen his defence in the defamation case, with the involvement of Govindan's son making it possible. The issue has drawn a sharp response from the Opposition. Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan demanded a public explanation from Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, accusing the CPM state committee of deliberately covering up Sharshad's complaint. He insisted that the identities of all CPM leaders allegedly linked to the financial transactions with Rajesh must be revealed. With the allegations gaining momentum, the CPM leadership finds itself under mounting pressure to respond, while the charge against Govindan's son has cast a fresh shadow over the party's credibility.

Leniency for convicts, misuse of UAPA draw flak at CPI conference
PATHANAMTHITTA: In a strong critique of the state home department, the district conference of the CPI in Pathanamthitta has raised concerns over the misuse of Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the provision of 'lenient conditions' for high-profile jail convicts including Kodi Suni, the prime accused in the T P Chandrasekharan murder. The political report, presented at the three-day meet being held in Konni, asked the ruling front to ensure fairness in the system. CPI state secretary Binoy Viswam, in his address, also took aim at the home department, cautioning the LDF government against the indiscriminate use of UAPA. Referring to the cases of Alan Shuhaib and Taha Fazal, Viswam said: 'Cases can be registered when there are valid reasons, but the government should not appear as one that keeps people in jail indefinitely under UAPA. That is the CPI policy.' He also cited the plight of Maoist leader Roopesh, who reportedly had to go on a hunger strike to publish a book, despite the Supreme Court having affirmed prisoners' right to do so. 'Kerala should not become a state that permanently detains citizens. CPI cannot accept this. UDF and BJP can do it, the Left government should not,' he stressed. The report highlighted that top police officers like ADGP Ajith Kumar are even disregarding ministerial directives. The report further criticised nepotism in Kudumbashree-linked appointments and warned that political welcoming of those accused under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities (Prevention) Act (KAAPA) and even POCSO could trigger public backlash. While acknowledging significant modernisation in the health sector, the CPI report called for better administrative discipline at the senior level. 'Kudumbashree is a major women's empowerment initiative, but placing its members directly in government departments without going through PSC (Public Service Commission) or employment exchange can raise fairness concerns and affect departmental functioning. Strong financial discipline is essential to avoid irregularities,' the report noted. Environmental concerns — including quarrying, soil removal, and paddy field reclamation — were also flagged, with the party calling for tighter vigil. The report also criticised the functioning of the animal husbandry department. On the national front, the CPI accused the RSS of attempting to portray itself as the 'apostles of the country' while glorifying leaders like Vinayak Savarkar 'who apologised to the British six times'. It also warned against Christian priests maintaining ties with the BJP, saying 'wolves in sheep's clothing' must be identified. The district meet will conclude on Saturday.

Kudumbashree Kerala Chicken project crosses Rs 400 crore in sales
Thiruvananthapuram, Aug 16 (UNI) The Kudumbashree Kerala Chicken project has crossed the Rs 400-crore sales milestone within six years. The initiative which was launched in 2019, currently operates 482 broiler farms and 141 retail outlets across Kerala, having sold 35,255 metric tonnes of chicken so far. Kudumbashree, Kerala's flagship poverty eradication and women's empowerment mission, is the world's largest women's network and a model of community-based grassroots development. Through an integrated farming model, beneficiary farmers earn up to ₹2.5 lakh every two months. Farmers rearing at least 10,000 chickens benefit directly from the scheme. So far, farmers have collectively earned ₹38.27 crore in income. Beneficiaries managing retail outlets have also secured steady returns, with an average monthly income of ₹1 lakh, generating a total of ₹54.60 crore to date. At present, the project provides direct employment and income to around 700 families and indirectly supports about 300 more. Production has grown significantly. While only 2 per cent of Kerala's domestic chicken demand was met through the project in its early years, the share has now risen to 8 per cent, with a target of reaching 25 per cent. Daily sales have also surged from 6 metric tonnes in 2021 to 58 metric tonnes in 2025. As part of its second phase, frozen chicken products have been launched under the 'Kudumbashree Kerala Chicken' brand. A dedicated outlet of the Kudumbashree Broiler Farmers Producer Company Ltd is also set to open soon in Thiruvananthapuram. Preparations are underway. The project was conceptualised both to ensure employment for Kudumbashree neighborhood group members and to provide consumers with quality chicken at fair prices. The promise of reliable returns with low investment continues to attract more farmers to the scheme. UNI DS AAB
