TAMBUNAN: A total of 135 entrepreneurs aged between 18 and 40 from Tambunan, Tulid and Melalap were fortunate to be selected for the Entrepreneurship Programme, each receiving RM500 aid. According to the Gagasan Women Youth Chief, Emmie Datuk Martin Idang, the assistance is one of the initiatives by the Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Haji Noor, who is committed to supporting the youth in the state – be it in education, human capital development, sports as well as young entrepreneurs. 'We will continue to make efforts to assist entrepreneurs so the amount can be increased, and hopefully more entrepreneurs will be involved in this programme,' she said when met after the event here. She added that the programme indirectly provides an opportunity for young traders in rural and interior areas, who do not have business licenses or bank accounts, to receive assistance from the State Government. Meanwhile, the entrepreneurs who were interviewed also expressed their appreciation for this initiative, which has been very helpful, and they hope the government will consider increasing the assistance. Entrepreneur Farah Trancisca Sylvester expressed her gratitude to the Chief Minister for the financial contribution. 'We are truly grateful, as the RM500 contribution can help us with our working capital,' she said. Another entrepreneur, Christian Geoffrey, expressed hope that the assistance would be increased so more youth, especially in this area, can benefit from it. * Follow us on Instagram and join our Telegram and/or WhatsApp channel(s) for the latest news you don't want to miss. * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? One-year training levy waiver from 2026: PM
Published on: Sunday, June 15, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jun 15, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim - pix Bernama KUALA LUMPUR: For the first time, the Government has announced a one-year exemption from training levy payments for all private educational institutions, effective Jan 1, 2026. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the exemption covers all institutions, including preschools, primary and secondary schools, vocational education centres, institutions of higher learning and general training institutes. Advertisement 'After receiving numerous views from (private) education and training institutions, the Madani Government has sought the best solution to train our young people. 'This (exemption) is intended to allow them to focus on improving quality,' he said when officiating at the highlight of the National Training Weeks (NTW) 2025 at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium grounds, here, Saturday. Also present was Human Resources Minister Steven Sim. At the same time, the Prime Minister directed the Secretaries-General of the Ministry of Education (MOE) and the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma) to monitor and ensure that these training institutions offer quality training following the granting of the levy waiver. 'Also monitor private companies with high profits to ensure they give something back to their workers,' he added. Under the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad Act 2001 (Act 612), employers are required to pay a levy to the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), an agency under the Ministry of Human Resources (Kesuma), for training and skills development. Anwar also stressed the need to train the younger generation in new fields using current methods, in line with the Madani Economic Framework, and not remain stuck in outdated training approaches. He said these include areas such as digital transformation, artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors and chip manufacturing. 'Malaysia's semiconductor industry is not small — the country is regarded as a hub and base for the Asean region. Nearly all of the world's largest semiconductor and AI companies are based in Malaysia,' he said. Meanwhile, Kesuma, in a statement, said the levy exemption amounts to RM46 million. It said the exemption involves 1,668 educational institutions and is valid from Jan 1 to Dec 31 next year. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Reconsider decision to expand SST to Sabah
Published on: Saturday, June 14, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jun 14, 2025 Text Size: 'This SST regime, combined with already burdensome regulations and tax compliance, is making Malaysia an expensive country to do business in,' Junz said. Kota Kinabalu: Warisan Vice President Datuk Junz Wong urged the Federal Government to reconsider the decision to expand the Sales and Service Tax (SST) regime starting July 1, reminding that the move will impose unnecessary hardship on businesses and consumers, especially in Sabah. In a statement, he questioned the rationale behind implementing such a far-reaching policy with less than three weeks' notice, calling it 'abrupt and confusing.' Advertisement 'The government must explain why this drastic SST expansion is being rushed through. What is the urgency? Why weren't businesses given more time to adapt? Many don't even know what is taxed at 5 per cent, 10 per cent, or exempted,' said Wong. 'And we all know what happens next whereas ruthless and clueless merchants will simply apply the highest tax rate across their product range, passing the burden to consumers and families.' He stressed that Sabahans do not support the expansion of the SST regime and called for it to be reviewed immediately. Wong also questioned the fiscal position of the Madani Government. 'Is our government so cash-strapped that it now needs to extract more money from the people and SMEs?' he asked. 'Malaysians are suffering for years of covid post effects, yet now rakyat and businesses must carry the burden.' Wong further warned that Malaysia risks losing its business-friendly reputation in the region. 'This SST regime, combined with already burdensome regulations and tax compliance, is making Malaysia an expensive country to do business in,' he said. 'How do we expect to remain competitive in Asean when others are streamlining their systems and lowering costs while we keep adding more layers of taxation and red tape?' He warned that the expansion of SST may discourage foreign direct investments (FDIs) and even lead existing ones to exit Malaysia. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
