CESC launches green drive to mark World Environment Day

The Hindu06-06-2025
Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) on Friday launched a green initiative as part of World Environment Day.
Free saplings were distributed to over 8,000 officers and staff across five districts. They were told to plant two saplings each. The campaign was formally inaugurated at CESC colony in Kesare here. A sapling plantation drive was jointly organised by CESC, Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Limited (KPTCL), and a federation of local organisations.
CESC Chairman and MLA Ramesh Bandisidde Gowda urged the citizens to join hands in preserving the environment. 'Our daily activities are harming the environment, despite conservation efforts. A healthy environment is directly linked to our well-being. Our ancestors led healthier lives even without modern facilities. Now, there is a need for living in harmony with nature,' he said.
CESC Managing Director K.M. Munigopal Raju said all CESC offices have been instructed to organise week-long environmental programmes. Each office must plant a minimum of five saplings.
Over 50 mahogany saplings will be distributed to the staff, who can plant them in their workspaces.

40k trees, mangroves planted under Amara Drive

Mangaluru: The Amara (Prakrutiye Pragati) drive, a "plant and adopt a tree" initiative launched on World Environment Day, has already added nearly 40,000 plants to the city's landscape, including 11,000 trees and shrubs and around 30,000 mangroves. The plantation drive is still in progress, and the aim is to reach 50,000 by the end of this month. Led by the district administration, Mangaluru City Corporation (MCC), Karnataka forest department, and CFAL Research Centre, Amara aims to restore the city's green cover, revive public participation, and serve as a model for urban reforestation across India. The campaign is led by Vijay Moras, CFAL trustee, and Prof Smitha Hegde, director of research, along with the CFAL and ELC staff, students, and teams. "It is citizen-driven and welcomes anyone who has planted trees to declare it and earn a certificate from the Mangaluru City Corporation," said Prof Smitha Hegde. She noted that many plantings may not yet have been reported or audited. The initiative was inspired by Tree Count Survey 2023, which revealed that only 6.2% of Mangaluru's public spaces are covered by greenery. Amara's long-term goal is to raise this to 30% by 2040, planting and maintaining 1.5 lakh trees across 60 wards. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 15 Beautiful Hairstyles For Women Over 30 Undo To ensure accountability, each sapling is geo-tagged and monitored for species, location, growth, and health. Native and adaptive species, including ficus, mango, jackfruit, and neem, dominate the planting list, with contributions from schools, NGOs, civic groups, and local businesses. The success of the campaign has caught the attention of Mysuru, which is set to launch its own tree count, and the Andhra Pradesh govt, which has approached the team to replicate the model, said Prof Smitha. Mangrove plantations, sponsored by Syngene CSR through Biocon Foundation and Vana Charitable Trust, are being undertaken near the Adam Kudru, Netravathi River bridge, where a valedictory ceremony of the drive will be held on Thursday. Former DC Mullai Muhilan, MCC commissioner Ravichandra Naik, and former additional DC Santhosh Kumar, DCF Antony Mariyapa and RFO Rajesh have contributed towards the drive's success. Protecting nature is responsibility of every citizen, says Haryana CM

Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini said on Sunday that protecting nature and environment is not merely a government initiative but the responsibility of every citizen. "Amid continuous development, we must not forget that the basis of life lies in nature and trees. Issues like climate change, irregular rainfall and rising temperatures can only be addressed through large-scale tree plantation and their protection, which is essential for securing our future," he added. The Chief Minister said that the state government has set a target of planting 2.1 crore saplings under several campaigns, to be achieved with collective efforts. He was addressing the 76th state-level Van Mahotsav organised at Seonsar in Kurukshetra district. Earlier, he laid the foundation stone of the Saraswati Wetland Reservoir, Saraswati Flora and Biodiversity Conservation Park and Saraswati Jungle Safari. He also released the 'Triphala' booklet. On this occasion, the Chief Minister planted saplings to give a message of environmental protection. He also unveiled the Haryana wildlife map, Kurukshetra wildlife map, and five books prepared by the Forest Department. Chief Minister Saini said that the 76th Van Mahotsav is not just an event, but a symbol of gratitude towards nature, responsibility and a resolve to ensure a happy future for generations to come. "This is the third event in the series of this year's state-level Van Mahotsav celebrations. Various programmes are also being held at the district level across the state, with active participation from local people and students." He added that Van Mahotsav means a festival of forests, a tribute to nature, and an expansion of greenery. "It reminds us that trees are not just a source of wood but the foundation of life." He said that "while we are moving ahead rapidly in the race for modernity, Van Mahotsav reminds us not to exploit nature but to learn to coexist with it". Recognising the importance of trees, the state government has launched several plantation drives, which have yielded positive results, the Chief Minister added. Many plans have been formulated to increase forest cover, CM Saini said. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi also launched a unique campaign, "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam", on June 5, 2024, on World Environment Day at the Buddha Jayanti Park in Delhi. In the first phase of this campaign, a target of planting 1.6 crore saplings in Haryana was set, but the state exceeded the target by planting 1.87 crore saplings. This year, on June 5, the second phase of "Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam" began, with a target of 2.1 crore saplings. "Since October 2014, about 18 crore saplings have been planted in the state." The state government has also started special schemes to promote urban forestry so that greenery can be increased in cities. In addition, strict measures have been taken to prevent illegal felling of trees and to protect wildlife. The Forest Department has been instructed to be more proactive in this direction. To make society more sensitive towards forests and wildlife, facilities such as jeep safaris and children's study tours have been arranged at Kalesar. The 'Green Aravalli Action Plan' has also been launched in southern Haryana. This joint project of the Central and state governments will be implemented in the Aravalli hills of four states, including Haryana, covering 29 districts, five of which are in Haryana.

Mysuru Dasara Illumination to be more attractive and innovative this year: CESC MD

This year's Dasara illumination across Mysuru will be more innovative and attractive than ever before, adding to the allure of the festival to be celebrated from September 22 to October 2. A preparatory review meeting was conducted by Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Corporation (CESC) in Mysuru on August 8. CESC Managing Director K.M. Munigopal Raju said that the illumination is one of the highlights of the celebrations, and draws lakhs of visitors. ''This time, we must ensure that the illumination is visually more captivating while also being cost-effective,' he added. Addressing the electrical contractors, who are vested with the responsibility of illuminating the streets and the circles, the MD advised them to focus on innovation. He told them that the lighting along some of the streets were not up to the mark in 2024. According to the CESC MD, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had directed in the Dasara High Power Committee meeting that this year's illumination must be made more attractive than last year's. Accordingly, necessary preparations are being made by the CESC, he added. 'People's expectations have gone up, and they expect novel features. Hence, all efforts should be made to ensure that the Dasara illumination is of international standards with a thrust on visual appeal,' said Munigopal Raju. Pointing out that the drone show in 2024 drew tremendous appreciation, Mr. Raju wants this year's event to be bigger given the high expectations from the people. ''In order to add more grandeur to this year's programme, this year's event will be more spectacular with the use of more drones,' he added. Emphasis on safety It was noted in the preparatory meeting that large crowds gather to witness the Dasara illumination. Hence, ensuring priority to safety was of vital importance. ''As there is a high possibility of rain during Dasara, precautions must be taken to ensure that people's safety is not compromised,' said the MD. Designs being readied The illumination designs for lighting up the Jumboo Savari procession route were being finalised. Along with main arterial roads in the heart of the city and many of the residential areas, the city's traffic circles will be illuminated in an innovative manner. 'The necessary designs and patterns are being prepared,' according to Mr. Raju. The CESC MD impressed upon completing the illumination-related work on time to ensure that all roads are lit up ahead of the festival. Special emphasis will be laid on roads and circles around the venues of the Yuva Sambrahama and Yuva Dasara programmes. 'As the former is inaugurated a few days before Dasara, the illumination of the roads leading to the venue should be completed ahead of schedule,' said Mr. Raju. CESC Technical Director D.J. Diwakar, Chief Engineer of Mysuru Zone Mrutyunjaya, senior CESC officials and electrical contractors were present in the meeting.
