Not just white pumpkin, Soha Ali Khan has also been having ‘a little bite of' this ingredient for the past four weeks every morning: ‘It's ancient wisdom that still holds strong'

Indian Express6 days ago
After sharing that she has been having white pumpkin juice or white petha juice, Soha Ali Khan has now revealed that she also consumes raw garlic on an empty stomach. 'So for the past four weeks, I have been starting my mornings with a little bite of raw garlic. Why? Because this tiny clove is a powerhouse for immunity, gut health, inflammation, and overall balance. It's ancient wisdom that still holds strong,' she said on Instagram.
Detailing how best to take it, Soha added: 'I take one raw clove on an empty stomach, chew for as long as I can to activate the magic compound allicin (tell me your best time!) and then swallow with water. If you are not brave enough to chew, you can crush it and let it rest for ten minutes.'
It's not for everyone — if you're on blood thinners, have tummy sensitivity, or are planning surgery, always check with your doc first, she added.
'Yes, the garlic breath is real, but so are the benefits – so I suggest a good brushing of the teeth and a healthy dose of mouthwash after,' Soha concluded.
Garlic contains a compound called allicin, which is activated when the garlic is crushed or chopped. 'This natural sulfur compound has anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial, anti-fungal, and antioxidant properties,' said consultant dietitian Garima Goyal.
Improved immunity
Regular consumption can enhance the body's immune response – especially beneficial during seasonal changes and viral outbreaks.
Better gut health
Garlic acts as a prebiotic, feeding your good gut bacteria. Many users report reduced bloating and better digestion over weeks.
Blood pressure and cholesterol control
Studies suggest garlic can slightly reduce blood pressure and LDL cholesterol when consumed regularly.
Natural detox
Its sulfur compounds support liver detoxification pathways, helping the body flush out toxins.
Blood sugar support
It may improve insulin sensitivity and help regulate fasting glucose – a potential benefit for prediabetics.
But not for everyone
While it may sound like a miracle food, raw garlic is not for everyone, stressed Goyal.
*People with acid reflux, gastritis, or IBS may experience worsened symptoms.
*It can increase the risk of bleeding in those on blood thinners (like aspirin or warfarin).
*Pregnant or lactating women should consult a doctor before starting raw garlic in medicinal amounts.

How to take it (safely)
*Crush 1 clove, leave it for 5–10 minutes (to activate allicin), and swallow with water.
*Do not chew if you're sensitive to its pungency – this can irritate the stomach.
*Start with ½ clove if you've never had raw garlic before.
*Avoid pairing it with milk or tea right after – it reduces its absorption.
What to note?
Garlic is food – not medicine. Its benefits come with consistency and caution, Goyal said. 'For those with lifestyle diseases like PCOS, fatty liver, or mild blood pressure fluctuations, it can support healing as part of a balanced diet. But it's not a quick fix, and shouldn't replace a personalised nutrition or medical plan. When in doubt, always consult your clinical dietitian,' said Goyal.

Why Even Non-Drinkers Get Liver Disease – The 7 Hidden Triggers

Liver disease isn't just caused by alcohol. Poor diet, lifestyle, and metabolic issues are now major culprits behind the rising cases of non-alcoholic fatty liver Cases of liver disease, including fatty liver (hepatic steatosis), are rising rapidly across the globe. Alarming figures suggest that one in four adults in India is affected by fatty liver disease. This condition involves the accumulation of excess fat within the liver, impairing its proper function. Although the disease progresses gradually, it steadily weakens the body over time. There's a widespread belief that alcohol is the primary culprit behind liver problems. However, in recent years, a significant number of liver-related conditions have emerged among individuals who do not consume alcohol at all. So, what exactly is causing this damage? top videos View all Components of Metabolic Syndrome: According to a report by The Times of India, metabolic syndrome encompasses several interlinked health issues: abdominal obesity, elevated blood sugar or type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and hypertension. When these conditions appear together, the risk of developing fatty liver disease increases significantly. Excess fat, sugar, and 'bad' cholesterol in the bloodstream place added strain on the liver, leading to fat accumulation within liver cells and resulting in inflammation. Over time, this can result in scarring (fibrosis) and severe liver damage. Insulin Resistance: Insulin resistance occurs when the body produces insulin, but the cells fail to respond effectively. This leads to elevated blood sugar levels. The liver, in turn, begins to store more fat, which can trigger non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Worryingly, once fat starts accumulating in the liver, it can further worsen insulin resistance, creating a vicious cycle where each condition intensifies the other. Excess Sugar and Poor Diet: A poor diet is one of the leading causes of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Diets high in fructose-sweetened drinks, saturated fats, trans fats, and excessive animal protein contribute to fat build-up in the liver and exacerbate insulin resistance. Scientific studies suggest that replacing these with plant-based alternatives such as whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds can help protect the liver and improve overall metabolic health. Hormonal and Endocrine Disorders: Clinical evidence indicates that conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and other endocrine disorders play a role in the development of NAFLD. These conditions cause hormonal imbalances that disrupt metabolism and lead to fat storage in the liver. Lifestyle and Sleep Disruptions: Short or poor-quality sleep, along with conditions like sleep apnoea, are associated with fatty liver disease. This is likely due to disrupted circadian rhythms and worsening insulin resistance. A sedentary lifestyle, characterised by lack of exercise, prolonged screen time, and long hours of sitting, also significantly increases liver fat accumulation and overall metabolic dysfunction. Rapid Weight Loss: Losing weight too quickly, whether through extreme diets, severe calorie restriction, or weight loss surgeries, forces the body to release large amounts of stored fat into the bloodstream. This sudden surge puts the liver under immense pressure, leading to fat build-up and inflammation. Experts recommend gradual and sustained weight loss for those at risk of, or already dealing with, fatty liver disease. Environmental Triggers: Environmental factors such as air pollution, exposure to heavy metals, smoking, and certain nutrient deficiencies may also increase the likelihood of developing NAFLD. These influences, particularly in genetically predisposed individuals, can directly affect liver function and worsen metabolic imbalances. Liver disease is no longer an issue limited to alcohol consumption. With rising cases linked to lifestyle, diet, and environmental factors, it's crucial to recognise the warning signs early and take preventive action. How to survive parenthood dreams and work Life: 6 tips to balance work during fertility treatments

The hidden battle for parenthood: Why millions are facing infertility and how to find support (Image: iStock) A comprehensive analysis by Global Burden of Disease Study (1990–2019), which was conducted across 204 countries, revealed a 76.9% increase in the global prevalence of male infertility from 1990 to 2019, with over 56 million men affected. The highest prevalence rates were observed in regions like Western Sub-Saharan Africa, Eastern Europe and East Asia where notably, the 30–34 age group exhibited the highest prevalence globally. Using data from the same study, a research paper titled - Global, regional, and national burden of female infertility and trends from 1990 to 2021 with projections to 2050 based on the GBD 2021 analysis - revealed that the number of women experiencing infertility has risen significantly, with female infertility cases increasing sharply worldwide since 1990 and the highest increases are observed among women aged 30 to 34, a crucial reproductive age group. Infertility surge could change parenthood forever. Are you prepared for this new reality? (Image: iStock) BRICS Countries Analysis (1990–2021), a study focusing on BRICS nations, indicated that India experienced the highest increase in male infertility cases, with an additional 8.51 million cases. Rapid population growth and inadequate reproductive health services are to be blamed for this surge in India while countries like China and Russia showed gradual improvements over the past three decades. Parenthood in Peril: A 2023 WHO Report highlighted that approximately 17.5% of the global adult population, or about 1 in 6 people, experience infertility. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo This prevalence remains consistent across high-, middle- and low-income countries, underscoring the widespread nature of the issue. According to health experts, infertility cases are rising in men due to low sperm count, abnormal sperm function or azoospermia (no sperm in the semen) while women are facing fertility issues due to ovulation problems, endometriosis, fibroids, polyps, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), primary ovarian insufficiency (POI), autoimmune disorders and damaged or blocked fallopian tubes. To be able to conceive and fulfil the dream of parenthood, many couples are undergoing fertility treatments even though these solutions can be physically and emotionally challenging for some individuals. Essential tips to navigate the emotional journey of fertility treatment without losing hope for parenthood (Image: iStock) This is because managing the journey of frequent medical appointments, emotional stress and fatigue while also handling work responsibilities may add that extra amount of stress, making it difficult to maintain a regular work schedule. Those undergoing or planning to undergo a fertility treatment may also face a lack of understanding or support from colleagues or employers, adding to their emotional burden. However, it is important to understand that you are not alone. Seeking support, both professionally and personally, can make a huge difference. Hope for parenthood: In an interview with TOI, Diana Divya Crasta, Chief Psychological Counsellor at Nova IVF Fertility, asserted that it is essential to follow these vital tips - One of the most overlooked yet vital aspects of coping with infertility is asking for help. Many people tend to isolate themselves, often feeling that others won't understand their experience or fearing judgment. This isolation can lead to emotional exhaustion and burnout but it's important to remember that reaching out doesn't show weakness it shows strength and self-awareness. The first step in handling this journey is accepting your situation. Self-awareness is crucial. Recognising your emotions, limitations and needs can guide you in making better decisions both at work and in your personal life. Another key factor is involving your family, as per your comfort. Open communication can help set expectations and avoid misunderstandings but keeping your loved ones in the loop gives them a chance to support you in truly helpful ways. Support in the workplace is equally important. While it might feel uncomfortable to talk to a colleague or manager, remember that without open communication, your workplace cannot be expected to understand your needs. You don't have to share every detail, but give them a general idea such as needing flexibility for appointments or dealing with side effects to be able to get support. If verbal conversations feel too difficult, written communication can be a useful alternative. Sending an email or message to explain your situation briefly can be a good idea. Don't hesitate to seek professional support. Talking to a psychologist, counsellor, or therapist can give you a safe space to express emotions, process your thoughts, and build coping strategies. When you ask for help from a friend, a partner, or a co-worker then be specific. Let them know exactly what would be helpful, whether it's attending a doctor's visit with you, adjusting your schedule at work, or simply being available to talk. Balancing work during fertility treatments is not easy but with the right support, communication and self-awareness, it can become a manageable journey.
