India's defence production surges to all-time high of Rs 1.46 lakh crore: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi: India's indigenous defence production has surged to an all-time high of Rs 1.46 lakh crore, with exports increasing to a record Rs 24,000 crore in 2024-25, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday.
Addressing the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Summit here, Rajnath Singh said, 'Our defence production, which was only Rs 43,000 crore 10 to 11 years ago, has now crossed a record figure of Rs 1,46,000 crore, with the private sector's contribution of over Rs 32,000 crore. Our defence exports, which were around Rs 600-700 crore 10 years ago, have surpassed a record figure of Rs 24,000 crore today.'
He described Make in India as crucial for security and prosperity, stating that the use of indigenous systems during Operation Sindoor has proved that India has the power to penetrate any armour of the enemy.
'Our weapons, systems, sub-systems, components, and services are reaching around 100 countries. Over 16,000 MSMEs associated with the defence sector have become the backbone of the supply chain. These companies are not only strengthening our self-reliance journey, but are also providing employment to lakhs of people,' the minister said.
He further stated that the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme execution model, will open an opportunity for the private sector to participate in a mega defence project along with public sector companies for the first time, further bolstering the Make in India drive in the defence industry which played a key role in the success of Operation Sindoor.
The minister termed the execution model for the AMCA programme to build 5th generation fighter aircraft in India as a bold and decisive step, which will take the domestic aerospace sector to greater heights.
'Under the AMCA project, the plan is to develop five prototypes, which will be followed by series production. It is a key milepost in the history of the Make-in-India programme,' he said.
Highlighting the success of Make in India during Operation Sindoor, Singh stated that the Indian Armed Forces were able to take effective action against terrorism in Pakistan and PoK with the strengthened indigenous defence capabilities.
Rajnath Singh again made it clear that PoK is a part of India, and the people who got geographically and politically separated will, sooner or later, voluntarily return to India. 'The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government is committed to its resolve of Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat. Most of the people in PoK have a deep connection with India. There are only a few who have been misled,' he said.
The defence minister emphasised that the government has given priority to policy clarity, indigenisation, economic resilience and strategic autonomy, and the success of these efforts can be ensured only when all the stakeholders, including innovators, entrepreneurs, and manufacturers, become strong partners in this national mission. He exhorted the Indian industry to focus on national interests, more than company interests. 'If securing company interests is your karma, safeguarding national interests is your dharma,' he said.
Sharing his views on the theme of the summit 'Building Trust & India First', Singh stated that it is a matter of great pride that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has become the fourth largest economy. 'Today, India is not just a consumer of defence technology, but has also become a producer and exporter. When the world approaches us for high-end defence systems, it is not just a market indication, it is a respect for our capability,' he said.
Rajnath Singh further stated that today India is not only producing fighter aircraft and missile systems, but it is also getting ready for New Age Warfare Technology. 'Our progress in the field of Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Defence, Unmanned Systems, and Space-Based Security is being recognised on the global stage,' he added.

PM Modi announces additional aid for families hit by cross-border shelling

Katra (J&K), June 6 (UNI) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced additional financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each for families whose houses were severely damaged due to cross-border shelling from Pakistan. Addressing a public gathering here, the Prime Minister stated that households suffering severe damage due to cross-border firing will now receive Rs 2 lakh, while those with partially damaged homes will be granted Rs 1 lakh. This assistance is in addition to the support already provided earlier by the government, an official statement said. He emphasised the government's commitment to the well-being of those affected, noting that families who lost loved ones in the shelling have already received appointment letters for government aid. Recognising the hardship faced by over 2,000 families impacted by the shelling, PM Modi reaffirmed the government's solidarity with the victims, saying, 'Their pain is the nation's pain.' Stating that the government recognises border residents as the nation's frontline protectors, Modi said, 'Over the past decade, unprecedented efforts have been made to strengthen development and security in border districts'. Highlighting key initiatives, Modi said that approximately 10,000 new bunkers have been constructed, which played a critical role in safeguarding lives during the aftermath of Operation Sindoor. He also announced the formation of two new border battalions for the Jammu and Kashmir division, further enhancing security operations in the region. Additionally, he said two dedicated women battalions have also been successfully established, reinforcing defence capabilities and empowering women in the armed forces. Emphasising the significant infrastructure development taking place in India's international border regions, particularly in challenging terrains, the Prime Minister announced that hundreds of crores are being invested to improve connectivity and security. 'The Kathua-Jammu Highway is being upgraded into a six-lane expressway, while the Akhnoor-Poonch Highway is undergoing widening to facilitate smoother travel. Under the Vibrant Village Programme, development initiatives in border villages have been accelerated, ensuring better living conditions and opportunities for residents,' the Prime Minister said. He mentioned that 400 villages in Jammu and Kashmir, previously lacking all-weather connectivity, are now being linked with 1,800 km of newly constructed roads. He announced allocation of over Rs 4,200 crore for these infrastructure projects, reinforcing economic growth and regional development in border areas. Earlier, the Prime Minister laid the foundation stone, inaugurated and dedicated to the nation multiple development projects worth over Rs 46,000 crore at Katra. UNI VBH RBE PRS

PhysicsWallah's acquisition of Drishti IAS called off: Report

New Delhi: The much-talked-about acquisition of UPSC coaching institute Drishti IAS by edtech unicorn PhysicsWallah has reportedly been called off. The deal was in advanced stages but ultimately fell through due to multiple reasons, according to a report by Entrackr. In April this year, multiple reports said that PhysicsWallah was actively exploring acquisitions to strengthen its position in the civil services preparation segment. The proposed acquisition of Drishti IAS was estimated to be worth between Rs 2,500 and Rs 3,000 crore. Drishti IAS, a well-known name in UPSC coaching, especially among Hindi-medium aspirants, was one of the leading players being considered by PhysicsWallah, along with other institutes like Chaitanya Academy, Rau's IAS Study Circle, and Sarrthi IAS. According to the report, Drishti IAS evaluated the proposal after being approached by PhysicsWallah. However, considering its strong financial performance and independent growth, the company decided not to go ahead with the deal. The report added that Drishti IAS is currently not looking to raise external funds or be acquired. Founded in 1999, Drishti IAS has built a strong presence in the civil services coaching space. In the financial year 2023–24, the Delhi-based institute reported revenue of Rs 405 crore and a profit after tax of Rs 90 crore. The report indicate that the institute is also expected to post healthy growth in FY25. PhysicsWallah, originally focussed on online coaching for engineering and medical entrance exams, has recently been expanding into UPSC and other competitive exams. The acquisition of Drishti IAS was seen as a strategic step to strengthen its offline footprint and diversify its educational offerings -- particularly ahead of its planned stock market debut. However, as of now, both PhysicsWallah and Drishti IAS have not officially responded to the matter. Meanwhile, reports indicate that PhysicsWallah filed its draft IPO papers confidentially in March 2025, aiming to raise around Rs 4,600 crore. If successful, it will become the first Indian edtech unicorn to be listed on the stock exchange.
