Stern action will be taken against illegal sand mining: Maha Minister
The Revenue and Home Departments have issued a joint government resolution to curb sand mafias through stringent measures in cases of illegal sand mining, usage, and transportation, he added.
Minister Bawankule clarified that previously, vehicles caught transporting illegal sand were fined by the Revenue Department and released. However, under the new government resolution, both the Revenue and Police Departments will independently take action against such vehicles.
'If the Revenue Department seizes a vehicle, the Police will also act, and if the Police seize a vehicle, the Revenue Department will take action. This will result in fines from both departments and the filing of criminal charges.'
Bawankule emphasised that this new policy will introduce tougher measures to curb illegal sand mining. 'This government resolution will be made available to all, and its implementation will begin immediately. No leniency will be shown to sand mafias. Transparent and strict action will ensure justice for the common people and protection of the environment,' he added.
Meanwhile, Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan said that a meeting will be held soon for the remaining works of the Jhansinagar Upsa Irrigation Scheme, and the project will be followed up with the Central government to obtain the necessary approvals. He was replying to a question raised in the state assembly by Member Rajkumar Badole.
Minister Mahajan said that the original administrative approval for the Jhansinagar Upsa Irrigation Scheme was given on 18 October 1996. After that, the second revised approval was received on 18 March 2017. However, since some part of the project falls in the forest area, some work is pending. Still, some work has been going on since 1996, and a total expenditure of Rs 95.68 crore has been spent on the scheme till the end of May 2025.
The minister further stated that irrigation has been started in some areas from 2022-23. The area of this project was included in the Navegaon-Nagzira Tiger Reserve in 2013-14. Later, this area was declared an environmentally sensitive buffer zone in 2016. On 29 August 2024, officials of the Forest, Wildlife and Water Resources Department conducted a joint inspection.
He said that it was made clear that permission from the National Wildlife Board is mandatory for carrying out the remaining work of the Jhansinagar project.

As the allegation sparked public scrutiny over the accumulated violations, members of the ruling Congress party quickly clarified that Shivakumar was merely borrowing the vehicle for the brief inspection ride and didn't own it. A traffic police constable said it was a good move that Shivakumar drove the scooter. 'There are hundreds of violations captured from cameras that are pending. It is humanly impossible to recover those fines. In this case, the owner had not paid despite the 34 violations. With just a short ride by Shivakumar, we were able to clear the violations,' the constable said.

ED recovered Rs 23,000 cr laundered money, distributed it to victims: SG to Supreme Court
New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate has recovered around Rs 23,000 crore laundered money and distributed it to the victims of financial crimes, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta told the Supreme Court on Thursday. The statement was made by the top law officer before a special bench comprising Chief Justice B R Gavai and Justice Satish Chandra Sharma during the open court hearing on a batch of pleas seeking review of the controversial May 2 judgement of the apex court. The apex court had on May 2 ordered liquidation of Bhushan Power & Steel Limited (BPSL) while setting aside a resolution plan of JSW Steel Limited for the ailing firm. The CJI-led bench on July 31 recalled the verdict and decided to hear afresh the review pleas in the high stake matter. During the hearing on the review pleas, a lawyer referred to the Enforcement Directorate's (ED) probe in the BPSL case as well. 'Here also ED is there,' the CJI quipped. In response, the solicitor general said, 'Let me tell a fact, which was never said in any court, and that is …ED has recovered Rs 23,000 crore (laundered money) and given it to the victims". The law officer said recovered money does not remain with the state exchequer and goes to the victims of financial crimes. 'What is the conviction rate,' the CJI asked. Mehta said conviction rates in penal offences are also very low, and referred to the ills plaguing the criminal justice system in the country as the key reason for it. To which, the CJI said, 'Even if they are not convicted you have been successful in sentencing them almost without a trial for years together". The law officer said, 'In some of the cases where the politicians were raided, where the cash was found, our (cash counting) machines stopped functioning because of the huge cash…we had to bring new machines". He added that some narratives are being built on YouTube programmes when some big politicians are caught. The CJI said, 'We do not decide matters on narratives… I don't see news channels. I see headlines in newspapers only in the morning for 10-15 minutes". The law officer said he knew the cases are not decided by the judges on the narratives being built on social media and outside courtrooms. Several benches of the top court have been critical of alleged high handedness of the ED especially in cases involving opposition leaders in money laundering cases. The CJI-led bench on July 21, in a different case, had observed that the Enforcement Directorate was "crossing all limits". The suo motu matter pertained to summoning of two senior advocates by the ED for offering legal advice or representing clients during investigations.

4 minor boys killed, 2 injured after truck hits them in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli
Gadchiroli: Four minor boys were killed and two others suffered injuries after a truck knocked them down in Maharashtra's Gadchiroli district on Thursday morning, police said. The accident took place on Armori-Gadchiroli highway at around 5 am, they said. As per preliminary information, the six minors, in the age group of 12 to 16 years, were sitting on a roadside in Katli village, located 12 km from the district headquarters, when a truck hit them, a senior police official said. Four of them died and two others suffered injuries, he said. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he was extremely pained by the unfortunate and tragic accident. "I express my deepest condolences to the bereaved families. We stand with them in this tough moment of grief and loss," he said in a post on X. The two injured youth were receiving medical treatment at the Gadchiroli General Hospital, the CM said. "Chopper arrangements are made to airlift them to Nagpur," he said. "An ex gratia of Rs 4 lakh will be provided to the families of the deceased, and the State Government will bear all the expenses towards the medical treatment for the injured," Fadnavis said.
