Stay vigilant as today's cybercriminals use AI to launch sophisticated scams, Nancy tells women
KUCHING (May 10): Women entrepreneurs are increasingly being targeted by sophisticated online scam syndicates that exploit artificial intelligence (AI) and digital manipulation, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Dato Sri Nancy Shukri.
She said these cybercriminals use advanced techniques, including doctored images and videos of national leaders such as the Prime Minister and Sarawak Premier, to deceive victims into believing they are being offered financial aid or lucrative investment opportunities.
'These syndicates are targeting women, especially entrepreneurs, single mothers, retirees, as well as individuals who are actively doing business or newly applying for bank loans.
'Never click on any unverified links or scan suspicious QR codes, as your money could disappear in an instant,' she said when launching the Women Empowerment Programme 2025 for the Santubong Parliament constituency, organised by the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) here today.
The Santubong MP stressed the need to enhance digital literacy among women so they can navigate online platforms safely and spot potential scams.
She even shared her own experience of nearly falling victim to a scam call falsely claiming her loan had been approved.
'So if we're not alert about these matters, it will become a norm. These syndicates are smart in targeting those who recently applied for loans. Without awareness, many, especially women, will get caught,' she said.
To tackle this growing threat, she said the ministry will continue to collaborate with relevant agencies to provide trained speakers who can educate the public on scam prevention and legal recourse.
'This awareness is crucial, not just about technology and AI, but also about the actions to take if one becomes a victim. Otherwise, we'll only end up complaining among ourselves without knowing what steps to take next,' she said.
Nancy also reminded women entrepreneurs that while courage is essential in business, so is the wisdom to assess risks carefully.
'Not all investments yield immediate returns. However, with the right knowledge and networks, they can open doors to long-term success,' she said.
She highlighted various government initiatives designed to support women, including the Women Entrepreneurship Incubation Programme, One-Stop Social Support Centres, and the implementation of Gender Responsive Policies in both public and private sectors.
All these initiatives, she added, require active involvement from all parties, including non-governmental organisations, the corporate sector, local communities, and the women themselves.
Meanwhile, MARA Council Member Siti Ajar Yasin reiterated MARA's commitment to empowering women entrepreneurs through inclusive support initiatives.
She revealed that in 2024, MARA Sarawak disbursed RM1.1 million in matching grants under four schemes – MERIT, ADAPT, BEST, and DIGITALBIZ – benefiting 610 Bumiputera entrepreneurs, including 348 women.
'As of May 2025, 153 entrepreneurs have received MARA financing amounting to RM19.5 million, with 60 of them being women who received a total of RM4.2 million in funding.
'This includes 21 women entrepreneurs who received funding under the DanaNITA Scheme amounting to RM715,000,' she added. AI entrepreneurs nancy shukri scam women

Nancy: Ministry acting, not silent on student's case
Advocating safety: Nancy (left) and Fahmi are urging for a joint call to action. KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family and Community Development Ministry has not been keeping silent over the case involving 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, says Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. 'We did not keep quiet. When incidents like this happen, the Social Welfare Department is the first to meet the parents to offer the services we have. 'Beyond that, we need to know what else is required because many parties are involved – there are other agencies too,' the minister told reporters after launching the Child Protection Advocacy Programme: Kasih Children's Programme for the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur 2025 yesterday. Offering condolences to the family, she said: 'As parents ourselves, we know the feeling – even when a child has a fever, we feel it, let alone if something like this happens. 'We do not yet know the outcome, as the matter is with the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) and the police. 'We will follow the developments closely.' Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who was also present, expressed hope that the investigation papers would be completed soon. 'We leave it to the authorities, and God willing, the Home Ministry and Bukit Aman will handle the process properly without delay. 'We hope the investigation papers will be completed soon so the deputy public prosecutor can decide, and we believe this will bring anyone guilty to justice.' Fahmi reminded the public that bullying – whether physical, mental or online – is now a criminal offence under the Penal Code and warned against vigilantism or spreading unverified claims online. At the event, Nancy said it is crucial for parents to take the concerns of their children seriously when they face dangers both in their physical surroundings and cyberspace. 'If you see something wrong, report it. Listen to your child's complaints about school or outside. 'Don't let them sulk because we ignored their voices or what they said. 'Report it immediately to the Talian Kasih 15999 hotline or directly to the police. Swift action can save lives,' she said. Nancy said children today are vulnerable to physical and emotional abuse, neglect, online exploitation and cyberbullying, urging communities to be more alert. 'The government is always taking action, but I want to remind everyone that protecting children is not just the government's job. 'It is a shared responsibility – for parents, teachers, neighbours and the whole community. 'You are the eyes and ears of society. 'A timely report can change a child's fate. 'Don't be afraid or hesitant because the quicker a report is made, the sooner a life and future can be saved.' Nancy said the advocacy programme conducted last year engaged 2,519 students from seven schools in Kuala Lumpur, with 1,350 of them coming from Brickfields alone. In 2025, the ministry plans to implement the initiative in 300 schools and 30 child activity centres nationwide to ensure more children know their rights and have the courage to speak up.

No research on LGBT in marriages: Minister
PETALING JAYA: No research has been conducted on LGBT individuals who marry, said Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. 'Despite that, there are laws in the country that do not allow same-sex relationships, such as the Penal Code and the State Syariah Criminal Enactment,' she said in a written parliamentary reply to Shaharizukirnain Abd Kadir (PN–Setiu). Shaharizukirnain had asked how much research had been done on LGBT individuals who marry partners and what initiatives the government was taking to address the matter. LGBT – an acronym for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender – is an umbrella term referring to people whose sexual orientations or gender identities differ from the heterosexual and cisgender norm. In Malaysia, same-sex sexual acts and gender nonconformity are criminalised under both federal and state syariah laws. Section 377A of the Penal Code, which applies to all residents, prohibits 'carnal intercourse against the order of nature', interpreted as same-sex sexual conduct. The offence is punishable by imprisonment of up to 20 years and caning. rough initiatives to attract more students, positioning it as key to producing a skilled and competitive workforce.
