Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to make a historic visit to Trinidad and Tobago on July 3-4, marking his first official trip to the island nation as India's prime minister. The visit is particularly significant as it represents the first bilateral visit by an Indian prime minister to Trinidad and Tobago since 1999.
While this may be his first official trip, PM Modi's connection with Trinidad and Tobago dates back to August 2000, when he attended the World Hindu Conference at the Cascadia Hotel in Port of Spain.
Organised by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, the conference attracted over 1,000 delegates from around the world and focused on the theme 'Self-Emancipation and World Welfare'. At the time, Modi was serving as the general secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and delivered a keynote address centered on the ancient wisdom of Aatmanam Mokshartham Jagat Hitaya Cha—a principle that calls for the liberation of the self for the greater good of the world. In his address, Modi emphasised the importance of unity and the preservation of cultural heritage within the Indian diaspora.
The World Hindu Conference, held in Port of Spain, brought together a diverse group of leaders and thinkers. The event was attended by prominent figures such as Basdeo Panday, the then prime minister of Trinidad and Tobago, RSS Sarsanghchalak K Sudarshan, Swami Chidanand Saraswati, and Ashok Singhal. It was a powerful gathering that celebrated the resilience of Hinduism.
The Indian delegation was both large and influential, comprising key figures from the VHP, RSS, BJP, and Shankaracharya Swami Divyanand Teerth. Additionally, there was a significant delegation from Guyana, including Justice Nandram Kissoon, Swami Aksharananda, and minister of agriculture Pandit Reepudaman Persaud.
Even back then, Modi had established a strong connection with the Indian diaspora in the Caribbean. He visited villages in Trinidad, meeting with the local Indian community, learning about how they adapted to life in the Caribbean, and reflecting on their lasting ties to India. During one meeting, Modi praised the community for preserving their cultural and spiritual practices despite the challenges of distance and time.
The 2000 World Hindu Conference of Trinidad and Tobago was part of a larger series of events focused on promoting and preserving Hindu values. After previous conferences in Nairobi (1998) and South Africa (1995), the 2000 event aimed to unite people of Indian origin worldwide and strengthen their cultural and spiritual connections. This event also served as a precursor to the World Summit of Spiritual and Religious Leaders at the United Nations from August 28 to 31. The discussions at the World Hindu Conference 2000 influenced ideas shared at the UN in the following weeks.
Following the conference in Trinidad and Tobago, Modi continued to be actively involved in global platforms, advocating for the Hindu cause. From August 28-31, he took part in the Millennium World Peace Summit at the United Nations in New York, attended by over 2,000 religious leaders from around the world.
A few days later, on September 9, 2000, Narendra Modi attended a major event in Staten Island, New Jersey, organised by the Indian American community and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad. The event, with over 5,000 people in attendance, featured then prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the chief guest, along with several notable saints who had attended the UN summit.
In his 2000 speech at the World Hindu Conference in Trinidad and Tobago, Modi called for unity and global welfare. He urged leaders to prioritise the progress of society over personal gain. Today, as prime minister, Modi continues to follow these principles, promoting peace and cooperation in a world full of conflict. His actions reflect the same vision he shared 25 years ago, offering hope for a more united and peaceful future.

Will quit politics if PM Modi is not forced to leave Varanasi seat in 2029: Ajai Rai

Seeking votes for the 2027 Assembly election, Uttar Pradesh Congress President Ajay Rai on Sunday claimed that he would quit politics if Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not forced to run away from the Varanasi seat in 2029. Addressing a gathering in Pindra Assembly constituency in Varanasi, Rai said, 'You help us win the 2027 election and you will see that the power of your vote will force PM Modi to run away from Varanasi in 2029,' he said. 'I am announcing from this platform that I will quit politics if PM Modi is not forced to leave Varanasi in 2029 after our victory in 2027,' said Rai. 'I assure you we will come to power, despite setbacks,' he said, attacking the rival party for creating a wedge between communities. He was speaking at the launch of a book on former legislator Comrade Udal in the presence of former Chhattisgarh chief minister Bhupesh Baghel and other INDI bloc leaders. The Uttar Pradesh Congress chief sought votes for the Congress in the 2027 Assembly election and told voters that their support for the party in the upcoming Assembly election would pave the way for PM Modi's exit from Varanasi in the next parliamentary election. 'People who are working to divide society on caste lines and creating wedge between Hindu and Muslim will also be dealt with,' he said. Alleging the use of unfair means for getting a BJP legislator elected in 2022 from Pindra Assembly segment – which Rai himself lost by coming third behind the runners-up the from BSP, the UP Congress President claimed that even the 2024 Lok Sabha election would have become tough for PM Modi had the Congress won this Assembly seat in 2022. He also referred to the reduced margin of PM Modi's victory from Varanasi in 2024 and said, 'The voters of Sat Gaon in Banaras brought down PM Modi's victory margin in 2024 and I would have won that Lok Sabha election had I been also won the 2022 Assembly poll,' he said. In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, PM Modi polled over 6.12 lakh votes while his nearest rival Ajai Rai of Congress got over 4.60 votes. In 2019, PM Modi got over 6.74 lakh votes as compared to the runner-up from the Samajwadi Party, Shalini Yadav, who polled over 1.95 lakh votes.

India has never seen shortage of fuels: Hardeep Puri

Highlighting the government's achievements in the oil and gas sector, Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on Sunday said that "whether it was the period of the global Covid pandemic or global conflict, there has never been a shortage of petroleum products in India". "This has been possible due to the foresight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi," he remarked. He was referring to the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which peaked during the Israeli attack on Iran, during which shipping was disrupted and there were threats of closure of the Strait of Hormuz through which 20 per cent of the world's oil and gas exports are shipped out from the Gulf region. "Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, we have diversified our supplies in the past few years, and a large volume of our supplies do not come through the Strait of Hormuz now," the minister had stated earlier. India imports around 85 per cent of its crude oil requirement, and a surge in oil prices leads to an increase in its oil import bill and pushes up the rate of inflation, which hurts economic growth. However, it has diversified its oil sources by increasing imports from Russia as well as the US and building resilience through strategic reserves. Highlighting the infrastructure milestones in the oil and gas sector, Puri said that the country now has 23 modern operational refineries with a total capacity of 257 million metric tonnes per annum to produce petroleum products. The minister also highlighted the ministry's initiative in setting up storage facilities for strategic petroleum reserves, on which the country can fall back in times of emergency and which assume importance during times of geopolitical uncertainty. The storage capacity includes 2.25 million metric tonnes (MMT) at Pudur, the Visakhapatnam facility has the capacity to store 1.33 MMT of crude oil, while Mangalore has a storage capacity of 1.5 MMT. The Minister also underscored that India has achieved the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending with petrol ahead of schedule as part of the country's drive to push green fuels. E20 ethanol-blended petrol is now being made available to fuel vehicles at all the retail outlets of the public sector companies - Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum - nationwide. The minister stated that India has achieved the target of 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol in early 2025, which is six years ahead of the original deadline of 2030, reflecting the strong progress in the country's journey towards cleaner fuels. "This achievement not only reduces the country's carbon emissions but also saves huge amounts of money. In the process, we have saved Rs 1 lakh crore upwards. Rs 1.5 lakh crore of foreign exchange because of the import bill, and we have given that to our farmers," the minister said recently.

No place to sit for Ashwini Choubey at Bihar BJP meet & the Chandigarh dinner that's sending ripples

Choubey, the former Union minister who was left out of Modi 3.0, left many party colleagues stunned last May when, on the first death anniversary of the late Sushil Modi, he said the former deputy CM 'died early due to ill-treatment by a senior party leader'. Senior BJP leader and former Buxar MP Ashwini Kumar Choubey is going through tough times. At the party's state working committee meeting in Patna last week, he walked up to the stage but left after he did not find a place to sit, it is learnt. The meeting, convened to chalk out a strategy for the Bihar polls, was opened by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Akhilesh & Jayant no longer friends? On 1 July, Samajwadi Party (SP) chief Akhilesh Yadav received birthday wishes from leaders across party lines, including Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi, Apna Dal (Soneylal) chief Anupriya Patel, and Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) president O.P. Rajbhar. However, conspicuously absent from the list of names was Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) chief Jayant Chaudhary, once a close friend of Akhilesh. The two fell out after Jayant, who was elected to the Rajya Sabha, walked out of INDIA bloc and joined hands with the BJP, for which he was rewarded with a berth in PM Modi's Council of Ministers. Akhilesh, SP insiders say, feels betrayed by Jayant. The two have even stopped communicating with each other these past few months. The unease also extended to SP ally Pallavi Patel of Apna Dal (Kamerawadi) who wished Akhilesh a happy birthday, but did not receive a response on 'X'. In contrast, her sister and Union Minister Anupriya Patel, despite being an NDA ally, received an official 'thank you' from the SP handle. Dinner party sets off speculation A dinner hosted by Union Minister Rao Inderjit Singh at his daughter Arti Rao's official residence in Chandigarh recently has set political circles abuzz in Haryana. The gathering was attended by 12 MLAs, including 11 from the BJP and one from the Congress. They were mostly from the Ahirwal region. The Congress MLA was Manju Chaudhary from Nangal Chaudhry, who defeated former minister Abhe Singh Yadav, a close aide of former chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar, in the 2024 Assembly elections. Chaudhary had publicly claimed Rao's support during her campaign, as she did in 2019, adding intrigue to her presence. As the news of the dinner became public, some of these MLAs, including Sunil Sangwan, Mukesh Sharma, Krishan Kumar and Om Prakash Yadav, promptly paid a visit to CM Nayab Singh Saini's residence in Chandigarh. Rao later said his daughter had been allotted an official residence in Chandigarh and he invited people close to him for a dinner to mark the occasion. Rao, whose chief ministerial ambitions remains unfulfilled to this day, has been frequently taking jibes at Khattar, who is now a Union minister, and his successor Saini.
