Bafana Chan coach Ntseki welcomes Maema and several reinforcements for Malawi clash

TimesLIVE09-05-2025
Bafana Bafana have been boosted by the availability of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Neo Maema ahead of the African Nations Championship (Chan) second leg qualifier against Malawi at Loftus Versfeld stadium on Sunday.
Coach Molefi Ntseki also welcomed Ndumulelo Maphangule and Simon Ramabu (Polokwane City), Victor Letsoalo and Kamogelo Sebelebele (TS Galaxy) and Siyanda Msani (University of Pretoria).
Ntseki missed the services of the players during last week's first leg in a game that Malawi won 1-0 at home in Lilongwe.
In preparation for the clash, SA played a training match against Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars at Loftus on Thursday and Ntseki is happy with preparations.
'I think the first one was us playing the game we played in Malawi and the plan was to get a goal and not to concede. Unfortunately, we struggled with the game management,' he said.

Sundowns cruise past Richards Bay to set up MTN8 semifinal clash against Pirates

The Brazilians will meet arch rivals Orlando Pirates in the semifinal following a draw. Mamelodi Sundowns made light work of a timid Richards Bay side in their MTN8 quarter-final clash, cruising to a resounding 4-0 victory at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Sunday night. The Brazilians will meet arch rivals Orlando Pirates in the semifinal following a draw that was made after the game. Iqraam Rayners grabbed a well-taken brace as the defending Betway Premiership champions kicked off their 2025/26 campaign in style. An own goal from Simphiwe Mcineka and a late strike by youngster Siyabonga Mabena completed the rout, sending Sundowns into the semi-finals of the lucrative top 8 competition. The Brazilians were without star forward Lucas Ribeiro, who was left out of the matchday squad amid ongoing transfer speculation. Khuliso Mudau, also believed to be unsettled at the club, was another notable absentee. Despite missing key personnel, the Tshwane giants barely needed to shift out of second gear against a defensively-minded Bay outfit that spent much of the match camped in their own half. That negative approach allowed Sundowns to dominate possession, with Themba Zwane and Teboho Mokoena dictating the tempo in midfield. It didn't take long for Masandawana to break the deadlock. Just 10 minutes in, Rayners met a curling Marcelo Allende corner with a glancing header that beat goalkeeper Salim Magoola. Sundowns doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when Mcineka inadvertently turned Mokoena's low cross into his own net under pressure. Rayners completed his brace 10 minutes after the restart, coolly finishing at the near post after being played through by Arthur Sales. The former Stellenbosch striker made no mistake, slotting home with his right foot into the bottom corner. From that point on, Sundowns managed the game comfortably, controlling possession and winding down the clock with ease in Atteridgeville. Mabena, who replaced the ineffective Tashreeq Matthews in the 73rd minute, added further gloss to the scoreline. The 18-year-old's deflected shot wrong-footed Magoola to make it 4-0 late on. It was a commanding statement of intent from Miguel Cardoso's side, who appear determined to add the MTN8 crown to their trophy haul. Sundowns join MTN8 defending champions Orlando Pirates, Sekhukhune United, Stellenbosch in the last four of the season-opening competition.

Sundowns sweep aside Richards Bay to set up MTN8 semi-final showdown with Orlando Pirates

Photo: BackpagePix Image: Backpagepix The semi-final draw of the MTN8 dished out what many will no doubt describe as the final before the final, with holders Orlando Pirates set to contest the penultimate stage with Mamelodi Sundowns. Perhaps more importantly, this clash could well set the tone and give an early indication of whether the Brazilians are going to canter to a ninth successive league title or whether the Buccaneers will offer serious resistance — if not halt the yellow and royal blue juggernaut altogether. Pirates — 2-0 winners over Polokwane City on Saturday — will host the first leg of the semifinal in two weeks' time as they seek to win the season-opening tournament a record-extending four times in a row. The other semi-final pits last year's beaten semif-inalists Stellenbosch FC — who overcame AmaZulu 3-2 in extra-time — against Sekhukhune United, with the Cape Winelands team at home first. Ba Bina Noko also won by the same scoreline, albeit within normal time against TS Galaxy. The result of this match was never in doubt, given Sundowns' domination of this fixture — the Brazilians have never lost to the Natal Rich Boys. The only question was by how many goals Miguel Cardoso's men would win, and it became clear early on that the margin would be substantial. Iqraam Rayners helped himself to a brace, opening the scoring with a simple header from a Marcelo Allende corner as early as the 10th minute. It was 2-0 before the break after visiting captain Mpho Mncineka stabbed the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a cross from the right by Teboho Mokoena. Video Player is loading. Siyabonga Mabena delighted the crowd — and his teammates — when he came off the bench to score the fourth. The youngster showed maturity and poise during a solo run, firing home from the edge of the area to underline his status as a future superstar. The victory was a clear statement from Sundowns that they remain the team to beat this season, despite the impending departure of some key players. The big news prior to kick-off was the absence of stars such as Lucas Ribeiro, Khuliso Mudau and Peter Shalulile, all of whom are set to leave Chloorkop for clubs abroad. Yet, an uninformed observer might not have noticed their absence, as Sundowns dominated possession — as always — and looked threatening whenever they surged forward. Arthur Sales posed a constant threat up front, while Zuko Mdunyelwa was solid at the back. Veteran Themba Zwane returned to the starting eleven and pulled the strings from midfield with typical class. Intriguingly, new signing Fawaaz Basadien made a late cameo, initially slotting in at right-back before shifting into a deep midfield role — a departure from his usual position at left-back, which was occupied by Aubrey Modiba, absent from Sundowns' FIFA Club World Cup squad. It was a show of strength by a Sundowns team eager to end their five-year MTN8 drought, and their clash with champions Pirates is sure to be a thriller — and a likely barometer for the season ahead.

Mamelodi Sundowns news: Cardoso and Rayners

Mamelodi Sundowns shocked the continent in November 2024. The Portuguese Miguel Cardoso replaced former coach Manqoba Mngqithi. The former Esperance mentor had to hit the ground running — not only to deliver results, but also to maintain the Sundowns' traditional shoeshine and piano style of football. Despite winning the Betway Premiership and making the CAF Champions League final, Cardoso's critics feel his football is too pragmatic and direct for Kabo Yellow. 'In the beginning, people were saying, 'Ah, maybe coach Miguel's style is not exactly Sundowns' style'. That's absolutely wrong,' Cardoso said…Full story here. Image: FIFA After making the move to Sundowns from Stellenbosch in August 2024, the striker quickly silenced any doubts about his ability to perform at one of South Africa's supremos. The Mitchells Plain-born star hit the ground running, scoring on debut in a continental qualifier and following that up with crucial goals in both domestic and Champions League fixtures. By midseason, Rayners had already registered double figures in goals and was consistently involved in build-up play and assists… Full story here.
