Microsoft (MSFT) Scores a Win on Sony's PlayStation With Forza Horizon 5

Microsoft (MSFT) stock was on the move Monday after the tech company's Xbox division scored a win on Sony's (SONY) PlayStation 5. Xbox released Forza Horizon 5, previously an exclusive to Xbox consoles and PC, on the PS5 last month. Since then, the game has reportedly sold 2 million units.

Considering Forza Horizon 5 came out in 2021, it's impressive that Xbox was able to squeeze another 2 million sales out of it with a PS5 release. Additionally, Xbox benefits from the quick revenue boost from these sales, as compared to the long-running but lower revenue it generates from its Xbox Game Pass subscription service.
This also cements the viability of Xbox's current business model. Rather than focus on the release of exclusive games on its consoles, the company has focused on offering its games across multiple consoles, even those of its direct rivals. Doing so generates game sales from consumers who were unlikely to purchase an Xbox console but were still interested in the company's games.
What This Means for Xbox
While Xbox hasn't performed the best this console generation, lagging behind Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo's (NTDOF) Switch and Switch 2, there's still a space for it in the current video game market. Its desire to bring Xbox games to all platforms has benefited it through this period, as has its various purchases of large studios, such as Activision Blizzard and Bethesda.
If Xbox can build loyalty to its IPs across rival consoles, it could set the company up to return to an exclusive strategy. This would incentivize consumers to purchase its consoles to play their favorite titles.
Is Microsoft Stock a Buy, Sell, or Hold?
Turning to Wall Street, the analysts' consensus rating for Microsoft is Strong Buy, based on 31 Buy and three Hold ratings over the past three months. With that comes an average MSFT stock price target of $533.70, representing a potential 6.11% upside for the shares.

Cyberpunk 2077's next update adds ‘AutoDrive' and VRR for consoles

Cyberpunk 2077's Update 2.3, set to launch on Thursday for Mac, PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X / S, will add a bunch of new features focused around vehicles and proper VRR support on consoles. The new AutoDrive feature, available in all cars and motorcycles, lets you drive from place to place automatically. You can set where you want to go on the game's map, including driving directly to where you need to go for a quest. (The feature only works on roads, though.) You can also use AutoDrive in a 'wandering' mode that lets the car just drive around on its own. While AutoDrive is on, you can turn on a 'cinematic camera' mode to see some more dramatic shots. And if you'd prefer to get a taxi ride from the Delamain AI, that's an option in Update 2.3 as well once you've completed a specific quest. With Update 2.3, CD Projekt Red (CDPR) is also adding official in-game support for VRR on both PS5 and Xbox that can help with screen tearing when the frame rate drops. It was already supported at the system level, but the game's makers say that implementing VRR properly should improve the experience, which can come in handy when you're running in performance mode on consoles. On PC, the update adds support for AMD FSR 3.1, Intel XeSS 2.0, and HDR 10 Plus. Support for AMD's FSR 4 is being added, too, but you won't be able to turn it on in-game until you've installed the driver that supports it, and that driver won't be available until a 'later date,' CDPR says. The game will launch on Mac on Thursday, though you'll need an Apple Silicon Mac with at least 16GB of unified memory to be able to play it. Cyberpunk 2077 was also a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, and Update 2.3 will come to the platform 'at a later date.'

'Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger,' Phil Spencer says, as Microsoft announces another round of mass layoffs at its gaming division

An IGN report says Microsoft has begun a new round of mass layoffs across its gaming division, beginning with a 10% reduction—approximately 200 people—at social game developer King. Layoffs are also being announced at other European studios, according to the report, while US-based studios will be informed about job losses later today. Microsoft announced its intention to fire 3% of its staff, amounting to just under 7,000 people, in May; looming cuts to the company's game business were first reported last week. The company previously eliminated 10,000 jobs in 2023—just one year after it announced its intention to acquire Activision-Blizzard for $69 billion—and over 2,500 more in 2024. Which isn't to suggest that Microsoft is suffering greatly, or at all, for that matter. CEO Satya Nadella said the company put up "record performance" in its 2024 annual report: "We delivered over $245 billion in annual revenue, up 16 percent year-over-year, and over $109 billion in operating income, up 24 percent." It's going great in the company's Xbox division too, according to a memo sent to employees by Phil Spencer. A Microsoft representative confirmed with PC Gamer that the reported memo is accurate. "I recognize that these changes come at a time when we have more players, games, and gaming hours than ever before," Spencer wrote. "Our platform, hardware, and game roadmap have never looked stronger. The success we're seeing currently is based on tough decisions we've made previously. "We must make choices now for continued success in future years and a key part of that strategy is the discipline to prioritize the strongest opportunities. We will protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential, while delivering on the expectations the company has for our business. This focused approach means we can deliver exceptional games and experiences for players for generations to come." Naturally, Spencer also said putting thousands of people out of work will "increase agility" at Microsoft, because of course he did. It's quite a thing to tell people that everything is going great and you're going to "protect what is thriving and concentrate effort on areas with the greatest potential," while simultaneously showing them the door. Microsoft's priority these days, lest there be any question, is AI: Nadella leaned heavily into the company's "AI platform shift" in the 2024 annual report, and Microsoft is also reportedly increasing pressure on employees to use AI tools internally. Is it a good sign when you have to basically threaten your own employees to get them to use the products you're basing the future of your company on? I'm not a billionaire CEO so I can't say, but I do wonder if firing people who make a product people want so you can divert resources into making a product that even your own people clearly don't want is a sustainable long-term strategy. A CNBC report says today's layoffs are part of yet another round of cuts at the company that will put roughly 9,000 people out of work. In a statement provided to PC Gamer, the Microsoft representative said the number represents less than 4% of the company's total workforce, and noted that the gaming division is being impacted by the cuts but does not represent the majority of them. "We continue to implement organizational and workforce changes that are necessary to position the company and teams for success in a dynamic marketplace," the spokesperson said. Fresh from telling laid-off employees to console themselves with AI, Microsoft doubles down by advertising Xbox jobs with pathetic AI image: 'So tone deaf I hope it is satire'

When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. The rollicking clown car that is Microsoft corporate leadership has outdone itself once again. Earlier this month Phil Spencer said Microsoft's gaming business has "never looked stronger" as he announced mass layoffs, which was swiftly followed up by an Xbox exec suggesting that affected employees use AI to console themselves. And now? A round of slow claps for Xbox's principle development lead Mike Matsel, another victim of terminal LinkedIn brain, who took to the social networking site this past weekend to announce some good news: we're hiring! Except… The post comes with an image that is clearly AI-generated (first spotted by Eurogamer). It shows a cartoon image of a woman smiling and wearing headphones in front of a PC: but look closer and you'll notice that this PC is very special, because the display is on the back of the monitor. Then you notice her eyes aren't on the front of the monitor either (I guess there's not much to see), and she's just staring gormlessly over the top and into the distance. The more you look the worse it gets: the shading on her top is all sorts of wrong; the keyboard just seems to have randomly shaped blocks rather than resembling a keyboard; there's a weird little divot between the thumb and index finger on the left hand. In other words, this is a classic AI-generated image, aka slop. The thing is, this is being posted by a senior figure at Xbox and is explicitly about hiring graphics designers. You'd think that might earn a bespoke visual for any hiring push. Tempting as it may be to dunk on Matsel, the guy also may be trying to keep his own job: Microsoft has said "AI is no longer optional" for its staff, and employees are being evaluated on how they use these tools. The first reply to the post is, appropriately enough, a poop emoji. "This is so tone deaf that I hope that it is satire," replies Kevin Catarino. "Does everyone left at Xbox have brain damage," wonders Rick Desilets. "Are you seriously posting a job ad for Xbox Graphics using this AI garbage? It looks like shit, man, what is happening over there?" "AI is a billion dollar industry, a lot of money and resources have been poured into this, and this is the result of it," says Joseph M. "My god, I don't believe in AI and I never will. It's not worth the hype or money. You could have just hired someone for cheap looking for help with their portfolio to do a much better job than this." Microsoft's latest cuts were a real bloodbath, with studios like The Initiative closed and several high-profile Xbox exclusives cancelled, including Rare's Everwild, an unannounced Zenimax MMO, and the excellent-looking Perfect Dark reboot. Since the start of 2023, Microsoft has fired over 20,000 people. It's also announced that it plans to spend $80 billion on AI this year. Well: I hope you all like hot garbage. Because right now, that's sure looking like the future of Xbox. Solve the daily Crossword
