Ex-judge charged with possessing child abuse material allowed to travel to Europe

A former judge accused of inadvertently showing child abuse images during a lecture for law students has been given the all clear to travel to Europe. Former Fair Work Commission senior deputy president Alan Boulton, 74, fronted court for the first time after allegedly displaying the images in the last 15 minutes of a lecture at Monash University on February 5. Mr Boulton on Thursday appeared via video at Melbourne Magistrates' Court, where his lawyer Holly Baxter argued against the prosecution's attempt to impose a travel ban as a condition of his bail. The court was told Mr Boulton's lawyers had notified police on July 23 about a planned trip to Europe. 'My instructor has been upfront with the informant and police throughout the entirety of this investigation,' Ms Baxter said. 'No issue was taken with that. 'A serious amount of money has been spent on that trip.' Ms Baxter said her client had already travelled overseas in May during the investigation and returned, arguing that he wasn't a flight risk. Prosecutors said Mr Boulton hadn't been charged at the time of his previous trip. Magistrate Brett Sonnet said he was 'not persuaded' the restriction on overseas travel was necessary, refusing the application. Mr Boulton was charged on July 31 with one count of possessing child abuse material as a Commonwealth offence and two counts of possessing child abuse material. Victoria Police said in a statement last week officers seized electronic devices during a search of Mr Boulton's home about one week after the alleged classroom incident. A Victoria Police spokesperson said Mr Boulton was charged following a 'lengthy investigation'. Police said detectives travelled to Sydney and searched a second property, with the assistance of NSW Police, on February 13. 'Further electronic devices were located and the investigation into those devices remains ongoing,' police said. Following the alleged incident, Mr Boulton was immediately suspended from his role as a senior fellow at Monash University and removed from all teaching duties. He was also directed by the university not to communicate with students or staff or access the university premises. Mr Boulton is set to return to court on November 7.

Woman chained to bed, only allowed to leave to eat, police allege

A woman was chained to her bed, unlocked only to eat and use the toilet, so she didn't 'sneak out of the house to have sex with other men', police will allege in a case against her boyfriend who is now facing a raft of domestic violence charges. Broadie McGugan escaped from her alleged attacker Zane Woodward on Tuesday while she was at an ATM machine, hiding in a nearby chemist before making it to a nearby police station. Woodward was charged 24 hours later at his home and refused bail to appear in court later this month. Police will allege Ms McGugan was involved in a relationship with 34-year-old Woodward since September 2024. Sometime in June or July this year Woodward started chaining her to the bed by her right ankle at night, to prevent her from 'sneaking out' to have sex with other men, police allege. The chain consisted of a 'heavy set, metal chain link which was fashioned into a cuff and padlocked to her right ankle', according to police. 'This cuff was then padlocked to a chain that was secured to the bed frame,' Woodward is accused of taking Ms McGugan's mobile phone, wallet and keys, isolating her from her family, friends and work. Police will allege Woodward's behaviour continued to escalate and over the last week he started chaining the victim up during the day. Woodward had to unlock the chain to allow her to use the toilet or to eat food, according to police documents. He would occasionally deny her from using the toilet and would keep her chained up while he left the house, they said. About 2pm on Tuesday the alleged victim managed to escape from Woodward when he took her to the ATM in Central Ave, Oak Flats to check a bank balance. She fled and hid in a pharmacy and managed to flag down a customer to help her while Woodward allegedly drove laps of Central Ave looking for her. After reporting the matter to police the alleged victim was taken to Shellharbour Hospital where it was discovered she had numerous broken ribs, bruising and fractured eye socket which medical experts said were a couple of weeks old. The next day Woodward was arrested at his address and taken to Lake Illawarra Police Station where he was charged with kidnap with intent to commit a serious indictable offence, two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm – DV, take and detail a person with intent to obtain advantage, common assault and intimidation.

Legal academic Alan Boulton granted bail over child abuse material charges

A former judge charged after allegedly showing child abuse images to university students has been granted bail and plans to travel to Europe on an expensive trip. Alan Boulton, 74, was charged with three counts of possessing child abuse material after an alleged incident at Monash University's law chambers in the Melbourne CBD in February this year. Mr Boulton's case was brought before the Melbourne Magistrates' Court for the first time on Thursday for a filing hearing. His barrister, Holly Baxter, said her client had been "up front" with investigators, and was seeking permission to travel to Europe while on bail. "He booked the trip. A serious amount of money has been spent on that trip," Ms Baxter said. Ms Baxter said Mr Boulton had travelled overseas during the police investigation and had returned with no issues. The condition was granted by Magistrate Brett Sonnet, who adjourned the case until November, and ordered police to file a brief of evidence by September 18. Details of the allegations against Mr Boulton were not aired in court on Thursday. Victoria Police has previously said that "inappropriate images were inadvertently displayed during a university lecture in the CBD on Wednesday 5 February". Mr Boulton did not attend court in-person, instead appearing via video link wearing a suit and tie. He is yet to enter a plea to the charges. Mr Boulton, a former senior deputy director of the Fair Work Commission and Order of Australia recipient, was charged in July after a five-month investigation by Victoria Police. Properties in the Melbourne suburb of Middle Park and in Sydney were raided by police during the investigation. Monash University said it referred the matter to police and suspended Mr Boulton immediately. He is no longer employed by the university.
