PLDT, Smart provide free calls, texts, data for storm-hit customers
PLDT Inc. and its wireless unit Smart Communications on Tuesday announced they are providing free calls, texts, and 250MB of data to affected customers in areas severely impacted by the Crising-enhanced Habagat rains.
In a news release, PLDT-Smart said free calls, text, and data are now accessible to subscribers in Angono, Bataan, Bulacan, Cainta, Las Piñas, Marikina, Mindoro, Pampanga, Pangasinan, Pasig, Tarlac, Taytay, and Zambales.
The telco said it will continue to monitor conditions and coordinate with local authorities to extend assistance where needed.
'Staying connected is a lifeline in times like these,' said Manuel Pangilinan, chairman and CEO of PLDT-Smart.
Anastacio Martirez, COO of Smart, added, 'We've activated free calls, texts, and data in affected areas so our customers can reach out for help, or to their loved ones. Keeping our network up and our services available is our top priority.'
Pangilinan, who is also president and CEO of Meralco, also directed the power distributor to position and deploy high bed and amphibious trucks, motorized boats, and trained rescue teams in flooded areas.
PLDT-Smart said its Smart Cares Crisis Hotline (+63288457799) remains open to help customers connect with family members and receive safety advisories.
Customers are encouraged to follow official government bulletins and take necessary precautions, the telco said. — BM, GMA Integrated News

PAGASA: Isolated rains seen in Metro Manila, parts of PH
State weather bureau PAGASA said the Southwest Monsoon or Habagat and localized thunderstorms will affect the weather conditions in Metro Manila and parts of the country on Tuesday. At 3 a.m. a local pressure area was also spotted 895 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon. In its weather bulletin, PAGASA said Batanes and Babuyan Islands will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms due to Habagat. Flash floods or landslides are possible during severe thunderstorms. Over 80K individuals affected by typhoons, Habagat received aid from GMA Kapuso Foundation
A total of 83,804 individuals from various parts of the country who were affected by the recent typhoons and Southwest Monsoon (Habagat) have received aid from the GMA Kapuso Foundation. According to "24 Oras" Monday, Barangay Bucao in San Gabriel, La Union, was among the areas that were heavily impacted by the inclement weather, which left many homes devastated and caused a power outage in the neighborhood. "Nadaganan ng kahoy tapos 'yung iba, 'yung flooded po sila, we have a river kasi dito eh maraming residents sa area beside the river. Sila po 'yung victim ng baha," said Fr. Jonathan Obar, a Sanggunian member. "Nung humating-gabi na, lumakas yung ulan, lakas pa ng hangin, parang ipo-ipo na umiikot, lahat ng mga gamit naming sa loob, nabasa," said resident Magdalena Cariaga. In La Trinidad, Benguet, strawberry farmers suffered losses after their crops got damaged by the floods, while stores have been closed for almost a month due to the low number of tourists. "Kailangan ng bigas, wala rin benta kasi walang bisita," said Helen Hipol, a resident. The GMA Kapuso Foundation, under its Operation Bayanihan project, distributed relief goods to various parts of the country to help those who have been impacted by the heavy rains and floods. Relief goods were distributed to residents in Quezon City, Valenzuela, Bulacan, Rizal, Pampanga, Zambales, Bataan, Pangasinan, La Union, and Benguet. Families who worked in a landfill in Bauang, La Union, also received aid from the foundation. Aside from the 83,804 who received relief goods, a total of 2,800 individuals also received porridge with egg from the GMA Kapuso Foundation.
