BREAKING NEWS Three people dead after two cars and multiple trucks collide on the Western Highway near Armstrong
Three people have died after five vehicles collided on a busy highway in Victoria.
Emergency services rushed to the smash on the Western Highway near the intersection of Thomas Road about 12.30am on Wednesday.
It's understood two cars, a B-double and two smaller trucks were involved in the multi-vehicle crash.
The driver of one of the cars died at the scene.
Two people inside on the trucks was also declared dead at the crash site.
The three deceased are yet to be identified.
The driver of the other car was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Victoria Police said the circumstances of the crash are yet to be determined.
The highway has been temporarily closed in both directions.
Drivers have been told to detour via Moyston using Ararat-Halls Gap Road and Moyston-Great Western Road.
The Department of Transport and Planning said motorists should leave plenty of time as detours could add more than 20km to a journey.
Investigations are ongoing.
Major Collision Investigation Unit detectives are expected to visit the scene.

Four dead in crash after Spanish police chase ram raiders
Four people were killed when a gang of suspected ram raiders crashed into oncoming traffic during a high-speed police chase on Spain's Costa del Sol on Thursday. In an attempt to evade police cars, a van carrying the three alleged thieves swerved onto the wrong side of a motorway near Torremolinos and collided with a vehicle driven by an off-duty police officer. The three suspects are believed to have died instantly. Their bodies were removed from the wreckage by firefighters. The fourth victim, a police officer, was 'extracted from his vehicle by local police officers but later died', Malaga emergency services said. Identified only as Antonio, the 48-year-old officer was a member of the so-called Gotham Group, a branch of the Spanish police that works secretly at night to combat crime in the tourist hotspot. He had been driving towards his home in Benalmádena after finishing his shift. Police had been on the lookout for a gang believed to be behind a series of night-time ram raids on pharmacies in the Malaga area. Just before 5am, an alarm alerted officers to a break-in at a pharmacy in the Puerto de la Torre area of the city. The intruders deactivated the security shutters before forcing open the front door, but did not manage to open the safe before police raced to the scene. They escaped along the A7 coastal motorway towards Marbella, with patrol cars in pursuit. After speeding along the wrong side of the road to throw off the pursuit, they crashed into the off-duty officer's car when they took an exit near Torremolinos's Palacio de Congresos conference centre. The officer's car caught fire on impact. The National Police Force and the SUP, a Spanish police officers' union, sent their condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of Antonio. The interior ministry said the government was 'deeply saddened by Antonio's death'. Malaga's pharmacy association called for improved security to halt a 'crime wave' affecting chemists in the province. Four or five similar break-ins have been reported in the region over the past month.

Murder arrest after teenager killed in ‘hit and run'
A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a teenager was hit by a car that appeared to mount the pavement, police have said. CCTV footage of the incident in the Darnall area of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, appears to show a grey Audi veering into the opposite carriageway before hitting the 16-year-old boy at speed as he walked along the road. He was taken to hospital, but later died. An 18-year-old man riding an electric bike, was also hit by the vehicle. He suffered serious injuries and remains in hospital. The driver of the Audi failed to stop at the scene, South Yorkshire Police said. Police also said a 20-year-old man had been arrested in Kent on suspicion of murder. Three people, a 45-year-old woman and two men aged 26 and 46, have been arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and remain in custody. Det Ch Insp Benjamin Wood, the senior investigating officer in the case, said: 'This is a tragic incident in which an entirely innocent bystander, who was going about his daily business, has sadly lost his life. 'Our thoughts are with the boy's loved ones, and we remain focused on securing justice for them. 'We know that this incident will have caused concern in the local community, and we have a team of detectives working at pace to piece together the circumstances which unfolded. 'We're aware of footage being shared online, and I'd like to reiterate our message to the public to withhold from speculating or circulating videos, which may cause distress to the boy's family. 'If you have any footage, imagery or information that may help our investigation then please share this directly with us – it may form an important part of our enquiries. We are also keen to hear from the riders of two electric bikes who were in the area at the time of the incident.'

Driver has narrow escape as metal object smashes through windscreen
A driver had a narrow escape when a metal object smashed through his windscreen and sliced his head open as he drove along a motorway. Jake Gray, a 31-year-old welder, was travelling to work in his VW Golf when the piece of metal flew through his front windscreen and out of the rear window. The father of two was left with a severe head wound pouring with blood, but managed to safely pull on to the hard shoulder of the M56 in Cheshire. The mystery object had missed his face by a matter of inches. He called police after the incident on May 29 and was taken to hospital in Warrington, where he was treated for a hairline fracture of the skull. 'I was screaming in panic' Mr Gray, of Stockton, County Durham, said: 'I was on my way to work listening to Smooth Radio, and then suddenly I blinked and noticed my window was completely smashed. 'It was completely obliterated by this object that had come through, glass shattered in my face and I looked down and I was covered in blood. It has sliced straight through the windscreen and it's gone out the rear window too, which was also smashed, so it went right through the car. 'I somehow managed to pull over safely and called 999. It all happened in the blink of an eye and I was screaming in panic because of the blood. But it could have been a lot worse. I could easily have been decapitated.' Police and highways officers were unable to find the object at the scene of the incident, between junctions 10 for Stretton and 11 for Daresbury. A Cheshire Constabulary spokesman said: 'At around 6.15am on May 29, police received reports of a road traffic incident on the M56 between junctions 10 and 11. 'The caller reported an unknown object had hit his vehicle, smashing the windscreen and causing an injury to his head. He was taken to hospital and later discharged. Inquiries are currently ongoing.' A National Highways spokesman said: 'Our thoughts are with Mr Gray after this incident. While it would be inappropriate to comment on the details of this specific incident due the police investigation, National Highways has rigorous motorways inspection, reactive and routine maintenance regimes to tackle defects and remove debris. 'In urgent cases, we can and do close lanes or a carriageway to remove debris including after collisions or in cases where items have fallen from vehicles. The next planned 'sweep' of this section of the M56 is at the end of the month. 'Anyone spotting hazardous debris can report it to us, when they can do so safely, by calling our 24-7 customer contact centre on 0300 123 5000.'
