High Court orders Centre to resume MGNREGA in West Bengal from August 1
The Calcutta High Court has ordered the Central Government to resume implementation of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) in West Bengal from August 1.The project had been stalled for nearly three years in the state, as allegations of corruption led to a political blame game between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).advertisementA division bench comprising Chief Justice T S Sivagnanam and Justice Chaitali Chatterjee Das has now ordered the implementation of the scheme.
The bench noted that neither the Centre nor the State had taken any action against those involved in the alleged corruption, which had delayed the scheme's implementation in Bengal."The Centre has sufficient power. The Centre will start this scheme not only in four districts but across the entire state from August 1. The Centre may impose any conditions or restrictions it deems necessary, so that the corruption which occurred previously is not repeated," the court stated.The High Court's order followed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that claimed the poor were being denied their legitimate entitlement under the Act, which guarantees 100 days of employment per year to rural households. BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had also filed a case in this regard, which was subsequently merged with the PIL.advertisementReacting to the order, Trinamool leader Kunal Ghosh said, "The state government will respond to this development in detail... But we want to say that today's order vindicated our stance and our fight for the central funds. Lokesh urges central support for HC bench, edu reforms in AP
Vijayawada: Minister Nara Lokesh on Wednesday urged Union minister for law and justice Arjun Ram Meghwal to help set up a high court bench at Kurnool. Lokesh met Meghwal on Wednesday as part of his Delhi tour and explained the necessity for a high court bench in view of the long-pending demand and practical difficulties faced by people from the Rayalaseema region. Lokesh also met several union ministers on the first day of his two-day visit to the national capital. In the meeting with Union minister for education Dharmendra Pradhan, Lokesh explained the structural reforms being brought for the Andhra model of education, with a special focus on learning outcomes. He also explained the Learning Excellence in Andhra Pradesh (LEAP) system, the one class one teacher initiative in 9,600 model primary schools, and the upgrading of 700 upper primary schools to high schools. To bring transparency into the system, legislation was introduced for teacher transfers, and star ratings are being given to schools based on performance. Lokesh said the state govt is planning to bring unified legislation for strengthening higher education in universities. He said that with the effective implementation of Swayam, Swayam+ Samarth programs, the gross enrolment ratio increased from 36% to 50% in higher education. The AI University, sports university, and international law university, which are to be set up, will further strengthen higher education in AP, he said. Lokesh also sought the Centre's cooperation in setting up food processing industries in the Rayalaseema region. In the meeting with the Union minister for food processing Chirag Paswan he explained that the Rayalaseema region is suitable for horticulture crops. Large cultivation of mango, tomato, banana, and other horticultural crops is done in the region, but farmers often find themselves at the losing end in the absence of processing units. Paswan promised to visit the region to explore opportunities for setting up new industries. Lokesh also met Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar and Union home minister Amit Shah and discussed various issues pertaining to the state.

Assembly Bypoll: Kaliganj votes today, parties eye early boost
As the bypoll in the Kaliganj Assembly segment in Nadia district comes less than a year before the elections in West Bengal, both the ruling TMC and the Opposition BJP are leaving no stones unturned to win the seat. With the TMC looking confident to win the minority-dominated seat, the BJP believes that 'Operation Sindoor' made a huge impact among the voters of Bengal and therefore, it will reflect in the counting of votes on June 23. Traditionally, Kaliganj had once been a strong bastion of the Congress. Other than Congress, the Left allies RSP won four times from there in the past. The Congress won from Kaliganj in the 2016 assembly election in alliance with the Left Front. But their winning candidate later joined TMC. In 2021, TMC's Nasiruddin Ahamed won from Kaliganj in 2011 but lost in 2016. He again regained the seat in 2021. After his demise, the seat fell vacant. The TMC has fielded 38-year-old Alifa Ahmed, the daughter of Nasiruddin Ahamed and a BTech graduate who works in a renowned IT company. While the BJP has picked Ashish Ghosh, a local panchayat member and former mandal president. Kabil Uddin Sheikh is the Congress nominee, backed by the Left Front. In last year's Lok Sabha election, CPI(M) candidate S M Sadi got the highest votes in Kaliganj Assembly segment. So, the Congress is expecting a good number of votes. On the other hand, the BJP is expecting the consolidation of Hindu votes, and is banking on the Congress candidate to split the minority votes to sail Ghosh through. 'We fought well in Kaliganj during the panchayat and Lok Sabha elections. In 2016, the Congress won the seat as part of the Left alliance. If we field a joint candidate now, we can defeat both TMC and BJP,' CPI(M) state secretary Mohammed Salim said. Kaliganj has a Muslim voter population of around 54 per cent, along with SCs (14.43 per cent) and STs (0.42 per cent). It is predominantly rural, with 90.67 per cent rural and 9.33 per cent urban population, as per the 2011 Census. 'The BJP thrives on dividing communities, but Kaliganj stands united. People here have rejected communal hatred time and again, and they will do so once more,' Alifa Ahmed said. State BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar said, 'The TMC is playing appeasement politics in the name of minority welfare. We want equal development for all without vote bank politics… This election is not about Hindu or Muslim. Whistleblower Gram Panchayat member killed by land mafia
NAGPUR: A 30-year-old Gram Panchayat member and BJP leader was brutally murdered on Tuesday morning in Saoner tehsil, allegedly by individuals linked to the land mafia. The victim, Atul Patil, was stabbed to death at Pipla, which falls under the jurisdiction of Khaparkheda police station in the district. Patil, a vocal whistleblower who had exposed several land scams, had filed multiple complaints against illegal land dealings, including schemes orchestrated by village sarpanch Vishnu Kokadde, a Congress leader and a close associate of former Maharashtra minister Sunil Kedar. The murder has sparked outrage and raised political temperature in the region, especially as the Zilla Parishad (ZP) elections are near. The police have arrested two suspects in connection with the murder - Himanshu Kumbhalkar, 19, who is the prime accused, and Vishnu Kokadde, 41, who had previously faced charges of forgery and cheating in a ZP land allotment scam exposed by Patil. According to police sources, Patil had used the Right to Information (RTI) Act to uncover fake documents used to develop unauthorised layouts. His complaints led to the registration of cases against Kokadde, a Gram Panchayat secretary, and others. It is alleged that Kokadde and his wife, former Nagpur Zilla Parishad president Muktabai Kokardde, misused their political influence to issue fraudulent No Objection Certificates (NOCs) and earn crores of rupees through illegal land deals. Senior Inspector Arvind Katlam of Khaparkheda police station revealed that Kumbhalkar had called Patil out of his house under the pretext of resolving an old dispute. 'As Patil stepped outside, he was ambushed. A brief scuffle broke out, but Kumbhalkar overpowered him and stabbed him multiple times,' said Katlam. Patil was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was declared dead on arrival. Both accused were produced in Saoner court, where Kumbhalkar was remanded to police custody till June 21 and Kokadde till June 19, for further investigation. The murder is also believed to be linked to the political rivalry between Patil and Kokardde in the area. However, police officials maintain that the land scam exposure appears to be the main motive. BJP leaders staged a 'rasta roko' protest demanding swift justice and immediate arrest of all those involved in the conspiracy. The agitation was led by local MLA Ashish Deshmukh and district president Manohar Kumbhare, who accused the authorities of failing to protect a whistleblower. Deshmukh has also demanded that the case be heard in a fast-track court. Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the region to prevent any law and order issues.
