‘Abusive' Call: NCW asks SP to revise action taken report in Anubrata case

The National Commission for Women (NCW) has sought a revised action taken report from Birbhum Superintendent of Police in connection with the case involving TMC leader Anubrata Mondal, who allegedly used abusive language against Bolpur inspector-in-charge Litan Halder and his family during a phone call last month.
On Tuesday, the NCW sent a second letter to the SP, expressing 'serious dissatisfaction' with the police response and sought a revised action taken report within five working days. It stated, 'While an action taken report (ATR) has been received, it is grossly inadequate… and fails to comply with the requisitions made by the Commission.'
The letter stated that NCW had requested a detailed report, including certified copies of the FIR, medical examination report of the accused, and other supporting documents. According to the Commission, these have not been provided. Additionally, the NCW claimed that the ATR does not indicate whether the interrogation of the accused was videographed.

Bengal porn racket case: Prime accused says she was framed, seeks fair probe

Kolkata: Shweta Khan alias Fultusi, the prime accused behind the West Bengal porn racket case, said on Thursday that she had been framed in the matter and her side of the story should also be heard. The West Bengal Police arrested her on Wednesday night. Khan will be presented at a trial court in the Howrah district later in the day. Earlier in the day, she was taken to the Domjur Rural Hospital in the same district, where she made these claims while speaking to the waiting media persons. 'I am being framed in the case. Let my side of the story be heard, also, and let the investigators check the facts. I have been arrested based on a complaint by the family members of a particular woman. That woman concerned is married and even has a kid,' Khan told media persons. After being on the run for quite some time, Khan was arrested on Wednesday night from a hideout at Alipore in South Kolkata. Earlier in the day on Wednesday, the policemen first arrested her son Aryan Khan and then her daughter Zoya Khan, a co-accused in the porn racket case. Based on the questioning of Aryan and Zoya, the state police arrested Shweta Khan, sources had said. The main charges against Shweta, Aryan, and Zoya are holding a woman from the North 24 Parganas district captive for six months and brutally assaulting her with an iron rod after she refused to participate in pornographic video shoots allegedly orchestrated by the three accused. Since Zoya is a minor, her case will be processed under the Juvenile Justice Act and referred to the Juvenile Justice Board. Aryan has already denied his involvement in the porn racket and said that he had a relationship with the victim woman who wanted to marry him. On Wednesday, police action in the matter was intensified after the National Commission for Women (NCW) took suo motu cognizance of the incident and wrote to the West Bengal DGP Rajeev Kumar, demanding immediate arrests under the provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. The NCW also instructed the state police to ensure that the victim receives free medical treatment and psychological counselling. Additionally, the Commission has directed the DGP to submit a detailed action-taken report within three days. Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP President and Union Minister, Sukanta Majumdar, has alleged that Shweta Khan has close links with several senior leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress.

Kaleshwaram project row: If found guilty, no one will be spared, warns Revenue Min Ponguleti

MULUGU: Dismissing the claims of political vendetta behind the ongoing investigation into alleged irregularities in the execution of the Kaleshwaram project, Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivasa Reddy on Wednesday said that once the PC Ghose Commission submits its report, those involved will have to 'face the consequences for their misdeeds.' Speaking to the media in Mulugu, the minister said: 'There is no question of any political revenge in this issue. The Central commission is conducting the inquiry. After the Commission submits its report, the culprits will have to face the consequences. No matter who they are and what their status is, they will not be spared.' 'The previous BRS regime had projected the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme as the eighth wonder of the world. The Kalvakuntla family looted the state while pillars of the project caved in during the BRS regime itself,' he added. 'KCR, the self-declared 'father of Telangana', deposed before the PC Ghose Commission. None of the people who were involved in this scam will be excluded from this inquiry,' he further said. Stating that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy and Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy protected the Kaleshwaram project by taking up temporary repair works, he said: 'The flaws in the project design, defects in its execution and damage caused to its various components will be revealed once the Commission of Inquiry submits its report. Then the courts will deal with it as per law.' 'The Congress government will neither spare those responsible for Kaleshwaram scam nor those involved in phone-tapping, land-grabbing, and Mission Bhagiratha scams,' he added. Earlier, Srinivas Reddy, along with Panchayati Raj & Rural Development Minister Danasari Anasuya alias Seethakka and MP P Balaram Naik, distributed sanction letters for Indiramma Housing Scheme beneficiaries at Incherla village in Mulugu district. They also laid the foundation stone for the construction of houses in the Indiramma Colony of the village. Stating that the government had sanctioned 4.5 lakh Indiramma houses in the first phase across the state, he said that the highest allocation of 5,000 houses was made in the Mulugu Assembly constituency. Later in the day, Srinivasa Reddy and Seethakka took part in the Bhu Bharathi Revenue Sadassulu programme at Govindaraopet village and interacted with the applicants.

Karnataka LoP Ashoka demands NHRC probe into Bengaluru stampede

Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Assembly, R Ashoka has sought the urgent intervention of National Human Right Commission (NHRC) in connection with the stampede incident near the Chinnaswamy stadium in Bengaluru. The BJP leader urged the Commission to take immediate cognisance of the incident and launch a comprehensive investigation into the roles and responsibilities of all government officials, agencies, and private entities involved in organising the event. In his letter to NHRC Chairman, Ashoka said the stampede near the stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL victory celebrations on June 4 was a "deeply disturbing incident of human rights violation" that resulted in the loss of 11 innocent lives and left 75 individuals injured. "This is not merely an unfortunate accident it appears, based on eyewitness accounts and preliminary investigations, to be the direct result of gross negligence, mismanagement, and a blatant disregard for public safety by the state government and the concerned authorities," he said in his letter dated June 11. Ashoka highlighted several critical lapses that he claimed led to the incident, which included lack of crowd control, lapses on part of the state government and organisers, and insufficient police deployment. "The area (stadium), which has a capacity of around 35,000, saw a massive and unmanageable influx of lakhs of people, allegedly due to misleading announcements regarding free passes," he stated. Citing inadequate security and police presence, he referred to reports suggesting a "serious shortfall" in on-ground security personnel required to manage the crowd. He also raised concerns over the alleged absence of basic amenities and emergency services at the venue. "Eye witnesses report a severe shortage of medical aid, ambulances, and even basic facilities such as water." Flagging the "irresponsible" conduct of organisers, he said, "The alleged misinformation by RCB, the event management firm DNA, and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) contributed directly to the chaos." "Although FIRs have been filed and an inquiry commission announced, the apparent lack of foresight and preparation by government agencies is deeply concerning," he stated. Ashoka has urged the NHRC to ensure accountability and recommend necessary disciplinary or legal action against those found negligent. He also asked the Commission to issue guidelines and protocols to prevent similar incidents during large-scale public events, with a focus on crowd control, safety norms, and emergency preparedness. "This preventable tragedy has caused immense grief and anger among the people of Karnataka. I firmly believe that the intervention of the NHRC is vital not only to secure justice for the affected families but also to ensure such an incident is never repeated," he added.
