The pressure is on for the defending World Series Champion Los Angeles Dodgers. As the club approaches the final 40+ games of their regular season, their top rival, the San Diego Padres, has climbed within two games of them for the lead in the National League West.
Los Angeles lost on Sunday, 5-4, in an effort to sweep the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers held the lead, but could not hold on late. Losing by one run hurts, but especially with the circumstances of the game.
Star Shohei Ohtani cost the Dodgers two runners on with two out in the fifth inning, as he elected to attempt to steal third without his manager Dave Roberts' blessing. He was out with Freddie Freeman at the plate.

Roberts was asked about it after the game, and had some blunt words for the media:
"That was his decision. Not a good baseball play."
To be fair to the MVP favorite, he has stolen 17 bases on the season, and that was just his fifth caught stealing on the season, but with a future Hall of Fame hitter at the plate, it may not have been his best choice.
Ohtani continues to mash for the Dodgers despite the bone-headed play. He is hitting .284, and tied with Kyle Schwarber at the top of the National League in home runs. Ohtani also has scored 111 runs, which is running away with the lead in all of Major League Baseball.
The Dodgers start a three-game series at the Angels on Monday, before a big weekend series against the Padres.

Giants Urged To Swing Blockbuster Offseason Trade For Polarizing Twins Ace

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco Giants are a few steps behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres in the National League West, but if the Giants can put together a solid offseason, there's a chance they could close the gap. San Francisco will almost certainly be involved in free agency and the trade market once the postseason comes to a close. Nick San Miguel of Around the Foghorn recently suggested the Giants could swing a blockbuster offseason trade for Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan. Ryan was mentioned as a trade candidate this season, but the Twins opted to hold onto him. DENVER, CO - JULY 20: Starting pitcher Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 20, 2025 in Denver, Colorado. DENVER, CO - JULY 20: Starting pitcher Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins delivers a pitch in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field on July 20, 2025 in Denver, Colorado."The SF Giants were sellers at the trade deadline, but if they were buyers, they would have been a perfect fit for both starting pitcher Joe Ryan and outfielder Steven Kwan," San Miguel wrote. "They can still make a run at both players in the offseason. Ryan has been a phenomenal starter for Minnesota this season. "In 23 games, he has a 10-5 record with a 2.79 ERA in 132 and 1/3 innings pitched. He has 146 strikeouts compared to just 26 walks and has a 0.92 WHIP on the year. For a Giants team that can likely only count on Logan Webb, Robbie Ray and Landen Roupp being in the rotation to start next season, adding Ryan to the mix would make the team's rotation very formidable. Plus, the fact that he is a San Francisco native only makes him an even more perfect fit." The Twins will almost certainly look to trade Ryan in the offseason, and the Giants could be the perfect landing spot. San Francisco still has the talented minor league prospects to swing a big deal like this. The Giants' rotation also needs all the help it can get. This is the kind of deal that would help close the gap on the Dodgers and Padres. If San Francisco is serious about becoming a World Series contender, adding an ace like Ryan is a necessity. Guardians' Gold Glove OF Called 'Perfect Fit' As Giants Trade Target

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The San Francisco Giants are clinging to postseason hope, and once again, they're a step or two behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. While the Giants have made big moves over the last few months, they need to continue to turn the heat up in the offseason or else the Dodgers and Padres will continue to run the National League West. Nick San Miguel of Around the Foghorn recently suggested the Giants could swing xa trade for Cleveland Guardians Gold Glove outfielder Steven Kwan in the offseason after whiffing at the trade deadline. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 9: C.J. CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - AUGUST 9: C.J. Kayfus #63 of the Cleveland Guardians high fives teammate Steven Kwan #38 of the Cleveland Guardians after hitting a home run in the sixth inning of the game against the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field on August 9, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. More"The SF Giants were sellers at the trade deadline, but if they were buyers, they would have been a perfect fit for both starting pitcher Joe Ryan and outfielder Steven Kwan," San Miguel wrote. "They can still make a run at both players in the offseason. "Kwan has been great for Cleveland as well. He is slashing .281/.342/.394 with nine home runs and 39 runs batted in. The Los Gatos native has won three straight Gold Gloves and would be a perfect upgrade over Mike Yastrzemski, who was recently traded to the Royals, in right field. The two players would fill pressing needs on the team and just so happen to be Bay Area natives. It sounds almost too good to be true." Kwan would be the perfect outfield option for the Giants to pursue if the Guardians are still looking to shop him in the offseason. It seems a bit unlikely that he's traded because the Guardians have a few years of team control left and they're firmly in the American League postseason race. Still, if Kwan ends up on the trade block again, the Giants have the prospect capital to go get a deal done. Adding Kwan to the top of the lineup would make San Francisco a World Series contender without a doubt. More MLB: Yankees' Gerrit Cole Provides Encouraging 5-Word Injury Update

Do Yankees, Mets Skids Have New York Baseball Headed For Empty October?

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. After being at the forefront of the bidding war for Juan Soto and the largest contract in Major League Baseball history, the pair of New York teams looked to both be headed back to October this season. That was until the past two weeks, the New York Yankees entered Tuesday 3-7 in their last 10 games, and the New York Mets are 1-9 in the same span, and on a seven-game losing streak. NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 04: Juan Soto #22 of the New York Mets scores a run during the third inning ahead of the throw to J.C. Escarra #25 of the New York Yankees... NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JULY 04: Juan Soto #22 of the New York Mets scores a run during the third inning ahead of the throw to J.C. Escarra #25 of the New York Yankees at Citi Field on July 04, 2025 in New York City. More Photo byAfter a strong start to the season that saw the Yankees 35-22 as the calendar flipped to June, the Bronx Bombers have not seen a winning record in any month since. August is on pace to be the Yankees' worst month, and with two teams, the Cleveland Guardians and the Texas Rangers, within three games of the final spot, the Yankees are entering crunch time. Much like their American League counterpart, the Mets started strong, but have faltered of late, falling to the final wild-card spot in the National League. A strong July has helped the Mets fend off the field for now, but in the second half of the season, the Mets are 8-13 entering Tuesday. After being buyers at the trade deadline, including revamping their bullpen with the addition of Ryan Helsley and Tyler Rogers, the Mets have stumbled through August with a 1-8 record during the month. The Cincinnati Reds and St. Louis Cardinals are knocking on the door, with both teams being within three games of the Mets. The Yankees have the best chance to keep playoff baseball in New York, as they have the fourth-easiest schedule remaining, while the Mets have the ninth-hardest. Both teams were streaking early, but with a little under two months to play, they find themselves in danger of taking an early vacation.
