Brendan Rodgers holds crunch Celtic talks with Dermot Desmond as new contract high on agenda

The Hoops boss is in the final year of his deal and met with Irish tycoon Desmond over the summer
Brendan Rodgers insists he won't let speculation surrounding his future become a distraction after holding crunch talks with Dermot Desmond.
The Celtic boss revealed he held face-to-face discussions with the club's principal shareholder over the summer as rumours swirl over whether he'll extend his stay beyond the end of the campaign.

Rodgers is entering the final 12 months of his three-year contract and has yet to indicate whether he's ready to stick around for longer.

And the Northern Irishman kept his cards close to his chest when asked about his summit with Desmond.
He said: "Yes, we spoke with all the guys. I had a meal and a chat around a number of things. So, yes, I had a nice meet.
"We touched base on it. But it is primarily just a chat around things. Like I said, it's still a long, long way out.
"But my focus is really just now getting the team ready and making us really competitive and exciting for this coming season.
"But a year's a long, long way out."
Supporters are desperate for answers but Rodgers insists the looming uncertainty won't weigh on his mind.

He said: "No, not at all. I think that I have to earn my place here at Celtic.
"And that's what I felt when I came back. And it's no different.
"It wouldn't matter to me if it was one year, one week or ten years.

"I'd be super motivated to progress the team and keep us moving forward."

Ex-Celtic star says he was once 'threatened by a murderer'

The former Hoops striker explained that the encounter took place whilst he was playing for St Johnstone in Perth. (Image: Archives) Former inmates were visiting the McDiarmid Park ground as part of a rehabilitation project while Watt and his teammates were posing for photographs on the pitch, The Sun reports. The 31-year-old stated that he jokingly told the man to get out of the shot, only for him to react angrily and confront the player in the changing room. 'We were doing a team photo, and there was somebody in a high-viz vest in the background. "I didn't know about the community thing at the time, so as footballers do for banter, I was shouting 'get out of this photo you' and there were a loud couple of laughs. 'I went into the changing room and the door opens and he goes 'Tony Watt, I don't want to be in your f*****g photo, you can f**k off'. 'He walked out, and the boys were like 'he was in jail for murder'. I don't think I spoke for the rest of the day. 'I was trying to be a smart Alec and I nearly got battered off a murderer. It's a good thing the club do to integrate them back in, but not when you have got loudmouths like myself shouting stuff at them.' Djeidi Gassama on 'crazy' road to Rangers as he lifts lid on life with Messi, Mbappe and Neymar at PSG

The 21-year-old has become the seventh summer signing for Russell Martin and played alongside some global greats when he was starting out New Ibrox wing king Djeidi Gassama was raised with football royalty in Paris - now he hopes to help Rangers reign supreme in Scotland. ‌ The France Under-20 ace has joined Russell Martin's new-look Gers on a four-year contract with the option of a fifth after completing a £2.2million switch from Sheffield Wednesday. ‌ The 21-year-old started his career with Paris Saint-Germain, where he had the incredible privilege of being able to train alongside superstar frontmen Lionel Messi, Killian Mbappe and Neymar. ‌ He also made his professional debut alongside two of the global icons when he helped the Ligue 1 giants to a 4-0 win over Montpellier in May 2022. Now the Light Blue legions are hoping some of their stardust has rubbed off on their new recruit after signing up to become Martin's seventh summer signing. Looking back on his PSG days, he said: 'Yeah, I started when I was young. I played in the U19s and I played my first game with PSG as a professional. 'They had players like Messi, Mbappe, Neymar. It was crazy. It's a good experience for me to train with them. "I learned a lot of things. When they go to the gym and on the pitch, they give 100%. 'When you see them doing that, you have to do the same. The training with them is like a game.' ‌ Now Gassama is determined to become a household name with the Gers faithful. The winger - speaking to Rangers TV - said: 'I'm very excited to start with my new club, this big club, with a lot of history. I'm very happy. 'When did I first hear of the interest from Rangers? A long time ago and when they came this summer I said to my agent, 'We go directly'. ‌ 'Why? First because it's a big club and I need that for my next level. So I think the club can give me a big progression for my future and for everything. 'I saw some games in Europe and against the opponent as well. I like it. I saw the manager and I have a friend. They told me good advice from the manager. ‌ 'He wants to play football. He likes to play football and me too. I like that. Gassama got his first real run of first-team action after moving to Belgian outfit KAS Eupen in September 2022, playing 19 times and netting twice. He was on the move again the following summer, this time to Yorkshire where he soared with the Owls. He leaves Hillsborough having scored 12 goals in 84 appearances. ‌ Gassama - who will go straight into Martin's squad ahead of next week's crucial Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos - said: 'The two years in Sheffield gave me a good progression and good experience in English football. 'I have the opportunity to play more. I took the chance and now I'm here. Yeah, I think I can become a better player here. I have everything to improve here - the coaches, my teammates. I think I'm a good player. I've played a lot of games and I think I can improve here in the next four years.' A cash crisis at Wednesday has allowed Martin to sign the talented wideman for a fraction of the fee the Sheffield support reckon he is truly worth. ‌ And the delighted gaffer said: 'We are very excited to bring Djeidi to the club. He is certainly an exciting player who will get supporters on the edge of their seats, and I believe he will add an extra dimension to our attack with his qualities. 'He is hungry to improve as a player and, most importantly, is desperate to pull on the Rangers jersey and help deliver success to the club.' Gers thought they had the deal done last week but were made to wait when Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri stalled in the hope of luring in bigger offers from rival suitors. But Ibrox sporting director Kevin Thelwell was relieved to win Gassama's signature. He added: 'We are delighted to secure Djeidi's signing. His attributes are well-suited to the challenges that we'll face both domestically and on the European stage, and he arrives with considerable experience under his belt at only 21. 'He is on an upward trajectory in his young career and we look forward to seeing him in action.'
