Rajesh Khanna Didn't Know What Income Tax Was, Says Anita Advani. 'How Many Zeros Should I Put'

Last Updated: Anita Advani recalls Rajesh Khanna's secret marriage with her and the day he fought over a Rs 45 lakh tax notice. Late superstar Rajesh Khanna's personal life has always sparked headlines – from his whirlwind wedding with Dimple Kapadia to his affair with Anita Advani. Now, Anita has opened up about her time with the actor, recalling a tense moment when he was slapped with a huge income tax notice and their private marriage that never made it to the public eye. 'Rajesh Khanna's House Was Never Sealed' Rumours once claimed Khanna's bungalow had been locked by authorities during his financial troubles. Anita dismissed it, saying, 'I had heard people say that Rajesh Khanna's house was sealed and he used to live in his office. This is absolutely wrong; he never lived in his office. The house was never sealed. There was a problem in the Income Tax in 1991." Rs 45 Lakh Shock According to her, the actor had little idea about paperwork or taxes. 'He never used to see the documents and he didn't know what income tax was. Whatever his team would tell him to give, he would give that amount. If he was asked to give one lakh, he would call his CA to ask 'how many zeros should I put.' Then tax became overdue and he or his team did not pay attention to it. He didn't even know that. He didn't know anything about chartered accountancy, and suddenly, he was asked to pay Rs 45 lakh." Anita added that Khanna personally went to confront an officer after receiving the notice. 'Then he got into an argument with an income tax officer. He went to personally meet him. The officer threatened him that he will seal his house and also thwart the release of his film." She said the dues were eventually cleared and the house was safe. Rajesh Khanna Secret Marriage Away from financial drama, Anita also addressed her relationship with the superstar. She revealed, 'We got married privately, but in the film industry, no one talks about such things openly. Everyone says 'we're friends' or 'we're in a relationship' or something else. But it was already reported in the media that I was with him, so neither of us felt the need to go and publicly announce that we were married. We never felt that need." Not KGF. This small-budget Rs 70 lakh film with no big stars changed Kannada cinema: Meet the director who shaped Yash and Puneeth Rajkumar's career

How this movie changed Kannada cinema forever? Yogaraj Bhat's journey in cinema In cinema, where crores are often poured into high-budget films with star-studded casts, a quiet revolution was born in 2006 in Karnataka. A small Kannada film titled Mungaru Male was made on a shoestring budget of just Rs 70 lakh. Yet, what followed was nothing short of historic; the film went on to earn over Rs 75 crore globally, a return of over 100 times its budget. To this day, it holds the distinction of being India's most profitable film ever in terms of return on mastermind behind this success was Yogaraj Bhat , a then relatively unknown filmmaker, who directed a poetic romantic drama set against the lush monsoon backdrop of Karnataka. The story followed a heartbroken boy meeting a spirited girl, with rain playing both a backdrop and metaphor. But Mungaru Male was more than just a love story, it was a turning point in Kannada the film hit theatres in December 2006, no one expected what came next. Not only did Mungaru Male become a blockbuster, it broke records left and right. It was the first Indian film to run continuously for over a year in a multiplex, completing 460 days at PVR Bangalore, a record still rarely matched. It also became the first Kannada film to cross Rs 50 crore in box office collections, an unimaginable feat at the made this achievement even more remarkable was the fact that the film had no big stars. Ganesh, who played the lead role, was known mostly for TV and supporting roles. Pooja Gandhi, his co-star, was a newcomer. But their on-screen chemistry, combined with stunning visuals and emotional depth, struck a chord with audiences. The film turned both actors into overnight the film's success didn't come without consequences. The exact earnings of Mungaru Male remain unclear. Initially, the movie was released with just 13 prints (physical film reels that allow screenings in theatres). However, at the height of its popularity, the number of prints grew to 150 across Karnataka and neighbouring regions. As reported by Bangalore Mirror, due to the huge success, producer E Krishnappa and distributor Jayanna faced multiple Income Tax raids, as authorities claimed the film had grossed Rs 67.5 crore and demanded taxes its earnings, Mungaru Male left a lasting cultural legacy. Its soundtrack, composed by Mano Murthy with lyrics by Yogaraj Bhat, became a sensation. Songs like Mungaru Maleye, sung by Sonu Nigam, are still played today and are considered modern classics in Kannada Yogaraj Bhat, Mungaru Male was just the beginning. He followed it up with several acclaimed films, such as Gaalipata, Manasaare, Pancharangi, and Drama. Each of these films carried his signature mix of philosophy, humour, and cultural depth. He became a unique voice in Kannada also became known for launching or redefining the careers of several major stars. He introduced Ganesh to superstardom, played a key role in Yash 's rise with Drama, and later collaborated with Puneeth Rajkumar in Paramathma. While not every film was a box office smash, many of them gained cult status for their storytelling and themes that were often ahead of their from directing, Bhat is also an acclaimed lyricist, having penned songs like Bombe Adsonu, Life-u Ishtene, and Kathlalli Karadige, known for their thoughtful yet relatable lyrics. It's a rare gift in mainstream cinema.
