BJP, DMK slam Vijay for indoor meet with sanitation workers amid privatisation row

India Todaya day ago
Tamil Nadu BJP unit and DMK leaders have taken a swipe at actor-turned-politician Vijay over his decision to meet protesting sanitation workers indoors instead of at their protest site.BJP senior leader Tamilisai Soundararajan said a leader should meet people where they are, questioning why Vijay chose to remain indoors.'It's good that he met them, but if his excuse is traffic, why did he even become a party leader? What kind of politics is this? He is sitting at home and not coming out fearing the crowd. Why should he be a party leader?' she remarked.advertisement
DMK spokesperson A Saravanan said Vijay was failing to understand the pulse of the people of Tamil Nadu.'People want leaders who are reachable, who see, meet and have a conversation, not someone sitting in an ivory tower, in an AC room, and issuing statements on Twitter. His excuse of saying traffic hindrance is laughable. Is he the only celebrity in Tamil Nadu? Vijay is ill-advised,' he said.In a post on X, Vijay wrote, 'While I had planned to personally meet the sanitation workers who are fighting for their just demands, I learned that they themselves wished to meet me. Considering that my visit to them might cause disruptions to traffic and the public, the sanitation workers came to the Tamil Nadu Victory Association's headquarters to meet me.'Sanitation workers have been protesting for the past few days against the privatisation of solid waste management in Zones 5 (Thiru Vi Ka Nagar) and 6 (Egmore), fearing loss of employment and demanding regularisation of jobs. The GCC has appealed to them to return to work, clarifying that all workers employed before the July 16, 2025, privatisation will now be hired by private contractor Ramkey and entitled to all benefits under labour laws.It added that since these workers were originally hired through outsourcing from the National Urban Livelihoods Mission (NULM), there will be no government jobs for them. The civic body said no worker had been denied employment, noting that 300 striking workers have already resumed duty. Ramkey is contracted to employ 3,809 workers, of which 1,770 have been hired; the remaining 2,039 posts are reserved for the protesting NULM workers.- EndsMust Watch

PhD student refuses to receive degree from TN Governor, accepts from Vice-Chancellor

Chennai: A dramatic incident unfolded at the 32nd convocation of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University (MSU) in Tirunelveli on Wednesday, when a PhD graduate refused to receive her degree from Tamil Nadu Governor and University Chancellor R.N. Ravi, and instead accepted it from the Vice-Chancellor. The convocation ceremony, attended by more than 650 graduates, was proceeding as scheduled, with each recipient going up to the Governor to collect their degree and exchange greetings. However, when it was the turn of research scholar Jean Joseph, hailing from Nagercoil, she walked past the Governor without acknowledging him and went directly to Vice-Chancellor N. Chandrasekar, from whom she accepted her degree. The unusual move drew murmurs among the attendees, with both officials on stage and students in the audience watching in surprise. Governor Ravi maintained composure as the student bypassed him. Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Jean Joseph explained her decision, saying, "Governor R.N. Ravi has been acting against the interests of Tamil Nadu and Tamils. I did not want to receive my degree from him." Her statement quickly went viral, adding fuel to ongoing political tensions between the Tamil Nadu government and the Governor over various issues. According to reports, Jean Joseph is the wife of M. Rajan, Deputy Secretary of the DMK's Nagercoil town unit. Political observers have linked her action to the broader political standoff between the ruling DMK and the Governor, which has seen repeated confrontations over policy matters, university appointments, and the Governor's public remarks. The incident has sparked sharp debate on social media. Supporters of her action praised it as a bold expression of dissent against what they see as the Governor's overreach, while critics argued that a university convocation was not the appropriate platform for political protest. University authorities have so far not issued an official statement on the matter. The Governor's office also declined to comment. This is not the first time Governor Ravi has faced visible protests in public forums. In recent months, his presence at events in Tamil Nadu has been met with boycotts and symbolic demonstrations by sections of students and political groups aligned with the state government. As videos of the convocation moment circulate widely online, the episode has once again underlined how political tensions in Tamil Nadu are spilling over into academic and ceremonial spaces.

Thoothukudi college blast: Palaniswami blames DMK govt, demands CM's response

Chennai: AIADMK general secretary and Leader of Opposition in Tamil Nadu Assembly Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Wednesday expressed shock over the explosion of what he described as a 'country-made bomb' allegedly brought in by students of the Government Polytechnic College in Thoothukudi. He accused the DMK regime of presiding over a deteriorating law and order situation and urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to 'step out of his denial zone' and respond to questions on public safety. The incident occurred on Tuesday during the lunch break when two first-year Diploma (Mechanical) students -- M. Mathavan (16) of P&T Colony and M. Murali Karthick (16) of Indra Nagar, Thoothukudi -- allegedly set off firecrackers inside their classroom. According to sources, the crackers were of the type used for fishing in ponds. Mathavan sustained severe injuries to his right hand, while Murali suffered injuries to his right eye. Both were admitted to the Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital. While Palaniswami alleged that the blast involved a 'country-made bomb' and reflected a collapse in campus security, Thoothukudi Superintendent of Police Albert John clarified that the explosion was caused only by firecrackers. He appealed to the public not to spread false or misleading information about the incident. In a strongly worded social media statement, the AIADMK leader drew parallels with recent violent incidents involving students. 'From knife fights among school children to machetes in school bags, and now a bomb explosion in a government college -- this is the grim reality in Tamil Nadu today,' he said. He contrasted the present situation with what he called the 'educationally progressive' image of the state under the previous AIADMK regime, claiming it was now 'drifting under the so-called Stalin-model governance.' Palaniswami criticised what he alleged was the DMK government's tendency to downplay such incidents as 'personal issues' and called it shameful. 'The presence of deadly weapons in an educational institution reflects a collapse in governance. Why is there hesitation when questions come from the people?' he asked, accusing the Chief Minister of remaining silent when confronted with uncomfortable queries on law and order. The AIADMK leader demanded that the state provide immediate medical care for the injured students and conduct a thorough probe into the blast. He also called for stringent legal action against those responsible and measures to prevent such incidents in the future. 'It is time to reclaim the state from a regime that has allowed weapons and explosives to enter our institutions,' Palaniswami said, warning that public confidence in the government's ability to maintain safety was rapidly eroding.

Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi snubbed at convocation by DMK leader's wife

A convocation ceremony in Tamil Nadu saw the Governor RN Ravi snubbed by a student who refused to accept her degree from him, opting instead for the Vice-Chancellor. The student is the wife of a DMK leader. This incident has ignited a political controversy, with the BJP stating it is a "deplorable drama" and "low-grade politics by DMK". The AIADMK described the act as "staged and enacted" for political mileage. The DMK, however, claims the student acted independently. This public display comes amidst an escalating tussle between the Governor and the state government concerning educational institutions, Vice-Chancellor appointments, and the Governor's assent to various bills, including one related to the creation of Kalinjar Karunanidhi University. The opposition has also decided to boycott the Governor's Independence Day reception.
