Sabah Tourism Board hosts GSTC workshop to drive sustainable tourism

Advertisement Organised by the Sabah Tourism Board, the workshop featured speakers from GSTC, namely, Randy Durband, CEO of GSTC and Kingston Khoo, a certified GSTC trainer. Both experts led insightful sessions that introduced participants to the GSTC Criteria and provided guidance on sustainable tourism implementation. The workshop was officiated by Datuk Josie Lai, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Environment, who emphasised Sabah's responsibility as a steward of its natural and cultural treasures. 'Sustainable tourism is not just a goal; it is a necessity to safeguard Sabah's environment and culture for future generations while supporting economic growth and community well-being,' she said. Following her keynote address, Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of Sabah Tourism Board, delivered a briefing on the importance of GSTC in guiding Sabah's sustainable tourism efforts. He mentioned that the objective for implementing the GSTC criteria is to align Sabah's tourism sector with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by integrating these global standards. This approach enhances Sabah's international credibility, fosters sustainable business opportunities, and strengthens its position as a premier ecotourism destination on the world stage. Sabah is already making significant progress, with three key sites – Maliau Basin, Imbak Canyon, and the Borneo Rainforest Lodge in Danum Valley – having achieved GSTC certification, demonstrating local commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism best practices. The workshop provided an in-depth overview of sustainable tourism principles, current global trends, and the pivotal role of the GSTC and its international standards in guiding both public and private sector practices. The morning sessions highlighted successful case studies from abroad, providing helpful information regarding real-world implementation of sustainability in tourism. A highlight of the day was a sharing session by Grace Pounsin from Yayasan Sabah Group, who detailed their successful journey in achieving GSTC certification for the Maliau Basin and Imbak Canyon Conservation Areas – powerful examples of Sabah's leadership in conservation and sustainability. The afternoon sessions focused on local context, emphasising the role of various stakeholders in applying GSTC standards in Sabah. Interactive discussions encouraged participants to explore practical and collaborative approaches to enhancing sustainability across the tourism value chain. In his closing remarks, Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of the Sabah Tourism Board, encouraged all participants to turn knowledge into action. 'We now have a clearer understanding of how sustainable tourism can drive real change for our communities and ecosystems. 'Let us take the GSTC standards and make them part of how we plan, operate, and innovate in Sabah's tourism sector. Together, we can ensure that tourism development benefits both people and the planet.' Mayor Walk returns this year to promote health, community spirit

The event, which is expected to attract 10,000 participants, will kick off at 6am at the MBKS Boulevard here. All registered participants will stand a chance to win exciting lucky draw prizes. At a press conference yesterday, Kuching South mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng said the initiative, first introduced in 2017, is part of the council's Youth, Culture, and Sports programme. It reflects the Kuching South City Council's (MBKS) mission to foster healthy lifestyles, encourage public participation, and strengthen community bonds. 'Mayor Walk brings together people of all ages, from young children to senior citizens, encouraging families and friends to walk side by side in a spirit of togetherness. 'It reinforces Kuching South's identity as a caring, safe, and inclusive city,' said Wee. The event also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). These goals guide MBKS in creating impactful and sustainable programmes that promote balance, awareness, and a connection with nature. Wee acknowledged the crucial role of sponsors in making the event a large-scale annual success. Among the key contributors are Ibraco Berhad, which has supported the event since 2018 by contributing RM80,000 worth of T-shirts; 38 Yayasan Amal Cinta, which has been a T-shirt sponsor since 2023; Chagee, which donated RM10,000 along with 600 free drink vouchers valued at RM10,140; and Lalamove, which donated RM20,000 and 10,000 branded hand fans. Other sponsors and supporters include Premier Echo Sound and Light System Sdn Bhd, which provide the sound system; Revive, which contributed 10,800 canned drinks for participants; Sarawak Energy Berhad, which contributed RM10,000; Go Beyond, WG Cycle, and Kok Siong, which contributed lucky draw items; and City Joggers Club (CJC), which has served as an event partner since 2017, assisting with planning, coordination, and volunteer mobilisation. Participants are reminded to collect their event T-shirts at the MBKS lobby on Friday (Aug 15), from 9am to 4pm, or on Saturday (Aug 16), from 9am to 1pm. Sagah: AI, TVET and renewable energy key to achieving SDGs

Speaking at the official opening of the 8th Technology and Innovation International Conference (TECHON) 2025 at a hotel here today, Sagah said the conference's theme, 'AI, TVET, and Renewable Energy: Driving a Sustainable Future through the Sustainable Development Goals', is timely and relevant in addressing the complex challenges of the modern world. 'We are living in an age of rapid transformation. Technologies are advancing at unprecedented speeds. Climate change is no longer a distant concern, it is a present-day crisis. 'Economic disruptions, digital divides, and shifting job markets are redefining how we live, learn, and work. In this ever-shifting landscape, three pillars emerge as crucial enablers of sustainable development: artificial intelligence (AI), Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), and renewable energy,' he said. The two-day international conference is organised by Politeknik Mukah, in collaboration with the Department of Polytechnic and Community College Education (JPPKK), Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka, Universitas Negeri Makassar (Indonesia), and Ecole Nationale de Commerce et de Gestion – Agadir, Ibno Zohr University (Morocco). In his officiating address, Sagah highlighted the transformative role of AI across sectors, from predictive healthcare and automated logistics to smart agriculture and digital learning. 'Al is not merely about replacing human effort. At its best, it is a tool that empowers decision-making, drives innovation, and solves real-world problems when applied ethically, equitably, and with human values at its core,' he said. According to him, AI has the potential to accelerate several SDGs, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure). However, he stressed that realising this potential depends on one essential ingredient: skills. 'TVET serves as the bridge between ideas or innovation and implementation, between technology and society. It is the system that equips our youth, our workforce, and our communities with the practical skills, technical competencies, and problem-solving mindsets needed to thrive in an evolving world,' he said. Sagah added that in Malaysia and across the region, TVET is becoming increasingly critical as industries shift toward automation and digitalisation. 'When we align TVET with technological advancement and sustainability goals, we are preparing a generation not only to adapt but to lead,' he said. On renewable energy, Sagah said it represents the most urgent response to the global climate emergency. 'With rising global temperatures and escalating environmental risks, we are already witnessing the consequences of unsustainable energy use. The world can no longer afford to rely on fossil fuels,' he said. He noted that Malaysia is making progress in renewable energy through initiatives in solar, wind, hydro, and biomass, but reminded that the transition is not just about technology. 'It is about people. It is about building green economies, creating climate-resilient communities, and securing a just energy future for all,' he said. Sagah emphasised that AI, TVET, and renewable energy must not be seen as isolated domains, but as interconnected strategies that must be developed in harmony. 'AI provides the intelligence to analyse, predict, and optimise. TVET provides the skills to act, build, and implement. Renewable energy provides the sustainability to protect and preserve. 'And TECHON 2025 brings us all together to share ideas, research, and best practices to move this vision forward,' he said. Malaysia hosts SDMX workshop to boost regional statistical capacity
IPOH: Malaysia recently concluded a high-level International Workshop on Advanced Statistical Data and Metadata Exchange (SDMX) at the Malaysian Statistical Training Institute (ILSM) in Sungkai, Perak. The three-day event, held from July 28 to 30, was organized by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) in partnership with the United Nations Statistics Division (UNSD), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The workshop gathered over 30 statisticians, data professionals, and IT officers from national statistical offices (NSOs) in Bhutan, Brunei, India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. DOSM stated that the event reinforced Malaysia's leadership in promoting global data standards and fostering a resilient, data-driven ecosystem. 'This workshop marks a strategic milestone in capacity-building and institutional empowerment, supporting structured governance and interoperability in statistical systems,' said DOSM. Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Uzir Mahidin emphasized SDMX's role in enhancing institutional integration and public trust. 'SDMX is not just about technical interoperability—it strengthens accountability, transparency, and the impact of official statistics,' he said. The workshop aligns with global efforts to modernize statistical ecosystems, backed by organizations like the UN, IMF, World Bank, and Eurostat. It also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving data quality and comparability. Mohd Uzir highlighted the need for structured data standards, integrating frameworks like the Generic Statistical Business Process Model (GSBPM) to enhance policy formulation. 'Data is a national asset, crucial for economic resilience and inclusive governance,' he added. DOSM also announced preparations for the 2026 Economic Census, which will provide detailed economic data to guide policymaking nationwide. - Bernama
