BBC launches investigation into Strictly stars' ‘cocaine use'

ITV News4 days ago
The BBC has launched an investigation into alleged cocaine use by two of the stars of Strictly Come Dancing.
Reports in The Sun allege their drug use was discussed on the BBC dancing show, and said that the corporation had appointed law firm Pinsent Masons to lead the investigation.
According to reports, the allegations were made in a legal submission by law firm Russells in March on behalf of former contestant Wynne Evans, who was dropped by the BBC after apologising for using 'inappropriate language' during the launch of the Strictly tour.
Others have also reported drug use on the show.
A BBC spokesperson said: 'We have clear protocols and policies in place for dealing with any serious complaint raised with us.
'We would always encourage people to speak to us if they have concerns. It would not be appropriate for us to comment further.'
it is understood that the BBC often appoints external law firms to help it lead investigations, while reporting back to an internal team.
The cast members involved in the investigation were not named by The Sun.
It comes after the BBC launched a review into Strictly in 2024 that looked into allegations of bullying and harassment against former professional dancer Giovanni Pernice, made by his former dance partner Amanda Abbington.
The corporation upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made – and introduced a series of new measures aimed at improving welfare.
This included the introduction of a chaperone who is present 'at all times' during training room rehearsals.
EastEnders star James Borthwick was also suspended from the BBC after a video emerged of the actor using a disabled slur on the set of the dance programme.

BBC presenter accused of 'showing penis picture' to staff member who burst into tears

BBC presenter accused of 'showing penis picture' to staff member who burst into tears It's the latest scandal to hit the BBC which has had to take action against a number of stars after a series of varied incidents (Image: Getty Images) The BBC has reportedly been embroiled in yet another controversy involving a prominent female presenter who allegedly displayed a 'penis picture' to a junior colleague - reducing them to tears. ‌ The broadcaster is accused of showing an image of male genitalia on her mobile phone during an informal chat whilst asking the producer whether she "liked d*** pics". Masterchef viewers said they noticed one thing about John Torode and Gregg Wallace in the show's return - read the full story here. ‌ Sources suggest the star posed an inappropriate question to the young employee before revealing the photograph. For our free daily briefing on the biggest issues facing the nation, sign up to the Wales Matters newsletter here ‌ The junior producer was reportedly left "horrified and in tears" following the incident. It remains unclear whose private parts appeared in the image, reports the Mirror. Management were informed of the encounter, with the presenter subsequently called into a confidential meeting where she was instructed to offer an apology for her behaviour. BBC personnel have characterised the crisis as a "ticking time bomb", with concerns mounting over potential widespread consequences should the presenter's name emerge publicly. ‌ A source told The Sun: "This incident goes beyond ordinary workplace banter. The staff member felt intimidated and upset, believing the act was meant to shock under the guise of a joke. "There's a sense that if this had involved a male presenter, the repercussions would have been immediate and severe. The fact that it's a woman at the centre of this makes the situation even more striking." The insider suggested the exchange was intended as 'jokey, locker-room type banter' but ultimately left the young producer in distress. ‌ A spokesperson for the BBC stated: "While we do not comment on individual cases, we take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously." The past year has seen the BBC embroiled in a series of controversies, including the dismissal of several Strictly Come Dancing stars due to their behaviour, as well as Gregg Wallace and John Torode's recent departure from MasterChef. The corporation also faced criticism for its coverage of the Glastonbury Festival. ‌ This year, Welsh presenter Wynne Evans was let go from his radio role at the BBC following allegations regarding his conduct. Jermaine Jenas, host of The One Show, was also dismissed by the corporation for sending inappropriate messages to two female colleagues. In another incident, Huw Edwards admitted guilt to possessing indecent images of children and avoided a custodial sentence after confessing to three counts of 'making' indecent photographs when he received 41 illegal images from a convicted paedophile via WhatsApp. Article continues below The former BBC presenter was given a six-month prison sentence, suspended for 24 months, and added to the sex offenders register for seven years.

Strictly legend says 'why not?' as he makes bold statement about show's future

Strictly legend says 'why not?' as he makes bold statement about show's future The flagship Saturday night show has been airing on the BBC for 21 years this year Edwina Currie and Vincent Simone (Image: PA) Former Strictly Come Dancing favourite, Vincent Simone says he expects Strictly Come Dancing to air for at least another decade. ‌ The 46-year-old dancer featured on the BBC's Saturday night show - which celebrated its 20th anniversary last year - between 2006 and 2012 and believes that the programme's immense popularity will see it remain on screens for a long time to come. ‌ Vincent exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I think it will carry on for at least another 10 years. I mean, I don't see why not. ‌ "We meet all the Strictly fans who come and see our own shows and they just love it too much. It's the best excuse to get together, families or friends, a bunch of ladies, and they just gossip about the show, they just get entertained from amazing dancing or, you know, fit celebrities. "There is everything in that show and every year you have the variety because you get 16 new celebrities joining the show so it's going to be fresh. You can't say, 'Oh it's always the same thing', yes, they might do the same dances but every person is so individual, especially when they have character and personality. "It's an amazing show. I can't see it ever ending but I will say at least another 10 years just by meeting the fans at the stage door afterwards, they're just obsessed with the show. They will always watch it, no matter what." ‌ Vincent felt the time was right to leave Strictly when he announced his departure in 2013 but revealed that he would be open to a return to the programme, particularly after watching his friend Ian Waite thrive on Dancing with the Stars - the Australian version of the show. Vincent left the show more than a decade ago (Image: UK Press via Getty Images) The Italian star said: "When I left, I thought that was the right time. I was super busy and it go the point where it was seven years in a row, it got to the point where I just needed a change. I did get my change with West End shows and so many other things. ‌ "I think now with age, like Ian is taking part in the Australian version. He loves it, he's doing really well. When you watch him dancing with these celebrities on the Australian version you think, 'Oh my gosh'. For me, because he's my friend, but for me he still has it. He could easily be on Strictly the UK version and I like to think that I could do the same because I could bring my personality and my dancing. "So I wouldn't mind that as a challenge at some point.' Vincent will appear with ex-Strictly pros Ian Waite, James Jordan, Brendan Cole and Pasha Kovalev in The Return of the Legends tour this autumn and revealed that the shows will be bigger and better than last year's sell-out tour. ‌ He said: "We've got a semi-new show coming up and we're all looking forward to it because obviously it's been nearly a year. It will be nice to be back all together and come out bigger than last year. "We're also gonna have our solos which for me personally are the most special numbers in the show, when each individual couple gets the stage on their own and for me that's just magic. Everybody has the chance to showcase their talent and their own style of dance. I'll be doing my Argentine Tangos, Ian will be doing his beautiful ballroom dances and Pasha, the Latin king, will be doing his Samba numbers and so on." The Return of the Legends tours nationwide from 5th September until 17th October. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter Article continues below

Thomasina Miers won MasterChef in 2005 (Image:for Pen) Thomasina shared a look back to her time on the show during a chat on the Spooning with Mark Wogan podcast. She disclosed what she thought about the news of Torode's upheld allegation: "I felt awful for John. I mean, and also the elegance of his response to it, how he conducted himself." ‌ She added: "I think, yeah, I was kind of gobsmacked by John (the news of the allegation being upheld), who was so caring and intent on the people under his watch, under his care." Thomasina was crowned winner of MasterChef in the first of the rebooted series of the show in 2005. A year after winning the competition, she co-founded her own restaurant chain, the popular Mexican-style street food brand Wahaca, which now has 14 sites in the UK. Amanda Holden and McFly star Danny Jones liked the former MasterChef star's post on Instagram from July 14 where he confirmed that he was the individual who was alleged to have used "racial language". A BBC spokesperson released a statement saying: "John Torode has identified himself as having an upheld allegation of using racist language against him. "This allegation – which involves an extremely offensive racist term being used in the workplace – was investigated and substantiated by the independent investigation led by the law firm Lewis Silkin. John Torode denies the allegation. ‌ She was the first winner of the rebooted MasterChef in 2005 (Image: Getty Images for Freuds) "He has stated he has no recollection of the alleged incident and does not believe that it happened. He also says that any racial language is wholly unacceptable in any environment. "The BBC takes this upheld finding extremely seriously. We will not tolerate racist language of any kind and, as we have already said, we told Banijay UK, the makers of MasterChef, that action must be taken. John Torode's contract on MasterChef will not be renewed." Article continues below The first three episodes of the latest series of MasterChef - featuring Torode and Wallace before they were axed - dropped on iPlayer yesterday morning (Wednesday, August 6). The episodes appear to have been edited to include fewer jokes between the pair and less chat between them and the amateur chefs than usual.
