The North Carolina Tar Heels, who aced the basketball transfer portal earlier this offseason, still have a major roster need to fill at small forward.
Many expected Drake Powell's return to UNC for his sophomore season, but Powell entered his name in the NBA Draft instead. Powell made a North Carolina return possible, but he's staying in the draft, thanks to a strong performance at the NBA Draft Combine.
Speaking of the 2025 Draft, we have an early installation of projections – and Powell lands in it. In a recent mock draft from ESPN NBA Draft Analysts Jonathan Givony and Jeremy Woo, Powell goes 31st overall – the second round's first pick – to the Minnesota Timberwolves.
If Powell lands in Minnesota, he'll be joining an extremely-talented team led by the likes of Anthony Edwards, Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert. The T-Wolves are currently in the Western Conference Finals, but they are in big need of small forward depth.
During his lone season as a Tar Heel, Powell showcased he can be a special offensive talent, but defense is the highlight of Powell's game. UNC head coach Hubert Davis would typically assign Powell to the opposition's best scorer, with Powell proving to give those players fits.
Today's NBA is dominated by iso ball and launching 3-pointers, both of which Powell is successful at, but defense will carve Powell out a spot in The League. Powell can perfect chase-down blocks, steal the basketball, rebound at high clips and race down the court for a dunk, or give you 10 points in 10 minutes.

Former Wisconsin class of 2026 quarterback commit pledges to new program Former Wisconsin class of 2026 quarterback commit Jarin Mock pledged to Bowling Green on Thursday. Mock previously joined the Badgers' class last July, back when Phil Longo was the program's offensive coordinator. Longo was then fired in mid-November after a 16-13 loss to No. 1 Oregon dropped his offense's outputs to 363.1 yards per game (91st nationally) and 23.9 points per game (98th). Mock went on to decommit from the class in mid-January after the program hired new OC Jeff Grimes. 247Sports lists Mock as a three-star recruit. He's specifically ranked as the No. 891 player in the class of 2026, No. 55 quarterback and No. 35 recruit from his home state of Ohio. Aside from Wisconsin, Purdue was his only Power Four offer. Mock's departure was part of Wisconsin's top-down overhaul of its quarterback room after Grimes' arrival. Braedyn Locke (Arizona), Tyler Van Dyke (SMU) and Mabrey Mettauer (Sam Houston State) transferred out, while class of 2025 signee Landyn Locke (Sam Houston State) committed elsewhere. The program then added transfers Billy Edwards Jr. and Danny O'Neil during the winter window, retained 2025 signee Carter Smith and landed a commitment from 2026 quarterback Ryan Hopkins. Mock now joins a Bowling Green program that has made three consecutive bowl games dating back to 2022. Entering 2025, the team is ranked No. 104 in the nation and No. 5 in the MAC by ESPN's Football Power Index. Wisconsin's quarterback recruiting in the class of 2026 appears finished with Hopkins' commitment. The Badgers' class currently ranks No. 28 in the nation and No. 8 in the Big Ten at this stage of the cycle It will be interesting to watch how Wisconsin's new-look quarterback room, led by Edwards Jr., performs in 2025. That output will inevitably be compared to how the program's former transfers fare with new programs, as well as to how Longo's Sam Houston State team performs in his first year in charge. The WNBA is no different. With roster cuts, a salary cap, and young talent oozing from the collegiate level, roster management has never been harder than it is right now. The Indiana Fever, who feature young stars such as Caitlin Clark and Aliyah Boston, began building through the WNBA draft while also exploring free agency to show the constant balancing act required to find success. Their current roster is young, but it is also very talented. That combination puts the Indiana Fever atop ESPN's rankings of the best young cores in the WNBA. With Clark and Boston, Indiana has the No. 1 picks from the 2023 and 2024 drafts -- each of whom went on to win Rookie of the Year in back-to-back seasons as well. When healthy (and both have been extremely durable throughout college and the pros, up until Clark's recent injury), no team has a dynamic duo this good and this young. That's particularly true when you consider how well their games complement each other's, with Clark serving as the WNBA's ultimate heliocentric perimeter creator and initiator, and Boston scoring inside the arc with high volume and efficiency. The two took some time to figure out how to mesh in Clark's rookie season last year, but both were improving their numbers early this season before Clark got hurt. Boston has a sky-high 65.7 True Shooting % (TS%) this season, for instance, while scoring 16.8 points per game. Don't sleep on Hull, either; the fourth-year guard out of Stanford has improved each year of her WNBA career and is tracking for a breakout performance. - Neil Paine, ESPN It isn't overly shocking that the Fever have found their place at the top of this list. They have the last two WNBA Rookie of the Year winners and are arguably the face of the entire league. Caitlin Clark has transcended the WNBA and is barely in her second season. Aliyah Boston is only getting better, and the rest of the Fever are going to be forced to develop alongside Clark, who makes life easier on everyone with the attention she demands from other teams. If the Indiana Fever can avoid major injuries or catastrophic departures in free agency, they are as primed as any team in the league to be contending for titles over the next decade.
