Kia eyeing broader EV, PBV expansion, says Ahmed Soudodi

Image: Supplied With the launch of the K4 compact sedan and Tasman pickup, Kia is positioning itself for deeper relevance in the Middle East's fast-shifting auto market — from design-led sedans challenging SUV dominance to rugged pickups blending utility with comfort. In an interview, Ahmed Soudodi, VP of Product & Marketing for You've launched the new K4 globally and in the US. Can we expect it in the region? Yes, absolutely. We're still finalisng the market rollout timeline, but our intention is to bring the K4 to the region. The K4 offers something refreshing in a world dominated by SUVs. Not every consumer wants an SUV. The K4 appeals to buyers who value sleek design, tech features, and practicality in a compact sedan format. We see strong potential for it among young professionals and families in the Middle East. What makes the K4 a compelling proposition for this region? It's bold and dynamic in design, loaded with advanced connectivity, and offers great value. The cabin experience and tech stack are really where it shines — large curved displays, OTA updates, and a refined layout. These are features Middle East customers now expect even in non-premium segments. The K4 answers that demand. What about the new Tasman pickup — will it come to the Middle East? Yes. We're very excited about the Tasman and can confirm it will be part of our offering in the region. The pickup segment in the Middle East is evolving, especially with more urban users seeking trucks for both work and leisure. The Tasman isn't just rugged, it's versatile. It combines the practicality of a utility truck with comfort and features for everyday driving. Image courtesy: Do you see off-road and desert culture influencing your strategy? Without question. Off-roading is embedded in the lifestyle here, and that's shaping how we approach product development and positioning. Whether it's SUVs or trucks, we're factoring in durability, terrain capability, and visual presence. But customers also want tech, safety, and refinement. That's the sweet spot we're targeting. How is Kia building its electric vehicle lineup in the region? Our EV strategy is rapidly evolving. We've already introduced the EV6 and EV9, and next up are the EV3 and EV5. These models will cater to broader price segments and market needs. The EV3, in particular, is a compact electric SUV with a lot of appeal for urban buyers. We're also focused on ecosystem partnerships, from charging infrastructure to service, so that adoption becomes seamless. Kia's also been talking about PBVs. What's the plan there? PBVs, or purpose-built vehicles, are central to our long-term mobility vision. The Middle East is very relevant for this because of smart city developments and logistics growth. Our PV5, the first dedicated PBV, will cater to fleet operators, ride-hailing, and delivery services. What makes it unique is its modular interior and flexibility — it's a tech-enabled workhorse. And because we're building it on a scalable architecture, we can quickly adapt based on market needs. Read:

These 3 GCC sovereign wealth funds now have AUM over $1tn each: Global SWF

Image: Getty Images/ For illustrative purposes The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is now home to three sovereign wealth funds with assets under management (AUM) exceeding $1tn each, according to the July 2025 rankings published by Topping the GCC list is Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), with AUM estimated at $1.15tn, followed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) with $1.11tn, and Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), which just crossed the $1tn threshold with $1.002tn. Globally, the top sovereign investor remains Norway's Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM), managing $1.76tn in assets. It is followed by China's SAFE Investment Company and the China Investment Corporation, managing $1.41tn and $1.33tn, respectively. PIF sees AUM increase among GCC SWFs despite profit drop Despite a 60 per cent year-on-year drop in net profit, attributed to rising interest rates and mounting costs from delayed or scaled-down mega-projects, PIF saw its AUM increase by 18 per cent from SAR3.66 tn ($977bn) last year. According to Global SWF data, 37 per cent of the fund's portfolio is committed to alternative assets including real estate, infrastructure, hedge funds and private equity. PIF, which backs signature Saudi initiatives such as NEOM and the Red Sea Project, also holds major positions in Saudi Aramco, Saudi National Bank, and Softbank. It is targetting $2tn in AUM by 2030, a milestone that would make it the world's largest sovereign wealth fund. Close behind is the UAE's ADIA, ranked fifth globally, with 32 per cent of its portfolio in alternative investments. Global SWF describes it as one of the world's largest investors in real estate, infrastructure and private equity. In its most recent annual review, ADIA stated a strategic shift in investment focus: 'Our approach has moved toward maximising total returns across the portfolio, rather than relying on individual asset classes to outperform benchmarks.' Kuwait's KIA, ranked sixth worldwide, continues to diversify its holdings. With 23 per cent of its portfolio in alternative assets, the fund maintains stakes in leading international firms including BlackRock and Mercedes-Benz Group. Global SWF's July rankings reflect the shifting dynamics in sovereign wealth, with GCC funds increasingly commanding a larger share of global institutional capital, and positioning themselves as pivotal players in alternative investments and global economic transformation. Sovereign giants PIF, ADIA, KIA thrive in trillion-dollar club with surging AUMs

The GCC is home to three wealth funds with more than $1 trillion each in assets under management (AUM), with Saudi's Public Investment Fund (PIF) leading the pack, followed by the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) and the Kuwait Investment Authority (KIA), according to the July 2025 rankings by Global SWF. The sovereign wealth fund tracker ranks Norway's Norges Bank Investment Management (NBIM) in first place with $1.76 trillion in AUM, followed by two China wealth funds, SAFE Investment Company (IC) with $1.41 trillion, and the China Investment Corporation (CIC) with $1.33 trillion. The state-backed PIF has an estimated $1.15 trillion in AUM, despite reporting a 60% slump in net profit last month on the back of high interest rates and spiralling costs on several giga projects that have either been scaled down or delayed. PIF's total AUM rose 18% from 3.664 trillion riyals ($977 billion) a year earlier, with 37% of its portfolio invested in alternative assets, including real estate, infrastructure, private equity and hedge funds, Global SWF data revealed. With a portfolio of investments that include giga-projects NEOM and the Red Sea coastal development, along with multi-billion investments companies such as Softbank, Saudi Aramco and Saudi National Bank, the fund is on track to become the world's largest SWF with AUM of $2 trillion by 2030, according to Global SWF. The UAE sovereign investor ADIA is a close second to PIF, with $1.11 trillion in AUM, while ranking in fifth place in global rankings in July, and just below the Saudi wealth fund. 'Due to its size and significant allocation to private markets, ADIA is one of the world's largest investors in real estate, infrastructure and private equity,' Global SWF noted, with 32% of the wealth fund's portfolio invested in alternative assets. In its review published in November, ADIA highlighted an investment strategy the fund has adopted in recent years is 'to emphasise total returns at a portfolio level, in contrast to the more traditional approach of tasking individual asset classes to outperform benchmarks.' Kuwait's sovereign wealth fund, KIA, with $1.002 billion in AUM, is ranked sixth by Global SWF. KIA has 23% of its portfolio invested in alternative assets with stakes in companies such as BlackRock and Germany's Mercedes-Benz Group. (Writing by Bindu Rai, editing by Seban Scaria)
