Row over Patna Medical College alumni association election
Patna Medical College
alumni came to fore after principal,
Dr Vidyapati Chaudhary
, on Wednesday called for a general body meeting next week to hold the election of the alumni association. This is contrary to a letter, which the former alumni association released, regarding the completed election process and names of the newly elected members.
As per another letter by Dr Chaudhary on Wednesday, the general meeting will be held on the PMCH campus at 1pm on April 29, stating every member was welcome to contest and participate in the
alumni association election
. He also expressed shock over the formation of a new body on Feb 25 during the PMCH's centenary celebration, alleging the said meeting was done in a drawing room and no one was aware of the election process. "Even the members who were elected were not aware of the said process. Even, I being the patron, was not aware of this election," Dr Chaudhary said, adding so long they were busy conducting the centenary celebrations. "So, now we have decided to hold the election so that everyone gets a fair chance."
However, Dr Sachchidanand Kumar, the incumbent treasurer of the association, denied the allegations levelled by Dr Chaudhary. "The alumni association is an independent body formed in 1936, and the principal has nothing to do with it. The principal has a role in the College Foundation Day committee but no jurisdiction over the alumni association," said Dr Sachchidanand, adding the election process was completed on Feb 25 itself. "The date is followed every time as maximum number of members are present because we celebrate the foundation day. A letter in this regard with the sign of former president Dr Satyajit Kumar Singh and secretary Dr Narendra Pratap Singh was also released."
The letter read Dr R N Singh was unanimously elected the president, Dr Dinesh Kumar secretary, and Dr Sachchidanand continuing as the treasurer. Among other new members, Dr Ram Raj Ravi is the senior vice-president (VP), Shishir Kumar and Dr Rekha Sinha VP, and Dr Braj Nandan Kumar senior joint secretary. The principal is the chief patron (ex-officio) and the superintendent the patron (ex-officio), read the letter.

Dr Sachchidanand even levelled various allegations over the centenary celebration, citing huge amount being charged from the members in the name of registration and poor management of the function. "The registration was like a movie ticket being sold in black. It started from Rs 7,000 and went up to a whopping Rs 25,000," alleged Dr Sachchidanand.

India's R&D deficit: Just where are the scientists?
(NOTE: This article was originally published in the India Today issue dated August 18, 2025)Nobel laureates and physicists Duncan Haldane and David Gross have just pointed out a huge mismatch: India has the talent, but is not benefitting because there's not enough funds for scientific research. Speaking at the Quantum India Summit in Bengaluru on July 31, Gross, who chairs an advisory board at the International Centre for Theoretical Sciences here, says India's lack of investment in R&D doesn't bode GDP is up, but its contribution to 'investments to the future', which will drive new technologies and industries, is low. In 2009, India's R&D spend was 0.84 per cent of GDP; it fell to 0.64 per cent by 2021 and is estimated to be 0.7 per cent in 2025. This is much less than what the US (3.5 per cent) and China (2.4 per cent) Rs 1 lakh crore Research Development and Innovation (RDI) fund, announced in this year's budget, should help. It will be operationalised this year, with Rs 20,000 crore already allocated. The Anusandhan National Research Foundation, launched last year, also has a fund, but will primarily invest in academic research and research labs. The RDI fund is meant for private sector R&D, with its Deep Tech Fund 1.0 focusing on strategic autonomy in critical sectors like clean energy and advanced materials. Last year, India was ranked 39th in the Global Innovation Index of 133 countries, up one spot from 2023. The number of full-time equivalent (FTE) researchers per million people in India is 255, abysmal when compared to the USA (4,452), China (1,307), Korea (7,980), and far below the global average of 1,198. The trend of fewer FTE researchers and minimal spends points to an underlying crisis in the R&D sector. As one researcher at the summit put it: 'Cutting-edge research is so fast; if we lose the first few years [due to cost-cutting], we are behind our colleagues abroad already.'Subscribe to India Today Magazine- EndsMust Watch

Activist Sonam Wangchuk Threatens Self-Immolation Over Ladakh Statehood Demand
Activist Sonam Wangchuk said the Leh Apex Body and Kargil Democratic Alliance should write to the Centre asking if the sixth schedule or statehood will be discussed In a video statement through which he is purportedly encouraging self-immolation, activist Sonam Wangchuk has said he is ready to set himself on fire over statehood for Ladakh and its inclusion in the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. In his message, released two months ago, he claimed that Ladakhis are upset over the 15-year domicile policy. Calling for a protest to send a message to the Centre before the next round of talks, Wangchuk said the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) should write to the central government asking if the sixth schedule or statehood will be discussed. If there is no response, it is implied that the Centre is delaying the matter until the code of conduct for council elections comes into force, he said in his message that was uploaded to YouTube two months ago as per the time stamp. He alleged that without the sixth schedule, Ladakhi tribals will be a minority like in Tripura. He said he was offered a BJP ticket and a ministerial position in 2019 but he refused. Watch the video here (translation to be available shortly): Wangchuk further alleged that he is being harassed as two infrastructure projects — a Rs 10-crore one by GAIL and another Rs 4-crore one by Coal India — were cancelled due to government pressure as they to be undertaken by his institution, Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL). He purportedly suggested an agitation on the lines of the 'Arab Spring" if the government is unwilling to grant the sixth schedule. In the video, he also asked for suggestions on a venue for self-immolation or death through hunger strike — proposing the home minister's residence, Parliament, the UN Office in New York as options. According to top government sources, however, Wangchuk's video message and appeal show that he is frustrated as he has failed to provoke ABL leaders and others against the domicile policy. His messages have become increasingly provocative over time, the sources said. The sources said he has repeatedly been trying to convince some supporters to commit self-immolation, similar to protests in Tibet. Sonam is exploiting the leadership vacuum and positioning himself as the face of the Ladakh agitation after Thustan Tsewang's resignation. He is exploiting Ladakh's geopolitical location and proximity to hostile borders, and his provocative speeches may be exploited by enemy countries. WHAT ARE THE PROTESTS OVER LADAKH STATEHOOD ISSUE? A three-day hunger strike jointly organised by the KDA and LAB seeking statehood and sixth schedule demands ended with a massive rally on Monday, with participants warning to intensify their agitation if the Centre continues its 'delaying tactics" to hold fresh round of talks with them. Leaders of both the groupings, including LAB co-chairman Chering Dorjay and Wangchuk, KDA co-chairmen Asgar Ali Karbalai and Qamar Ali Akhoon, and Ladakh MP Mohammad Haneefa Jan led from the front. Thousands, including religious leaders and hill council members, marched through the town chanting slogans in favour of statehood, Sixth Schedule, Public Service Commission and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil — the four major demands for which the KDA and the LAB are jointly spearheading the agitation over the past four years and have held several rounds of talks with the High Powered Committee (HPC) of ministry of home affairs. The participants also raised slogans like 'Hindustan Zindabad' and 'Hum bheek nahi apna haq maangte' (We do not beg for alms, we demand our rights), following which the leaders of the two bodies addressed the gathering and accused the government of forcing them to come on the roads by delaying the talks. 'This is a historic rally and a powerful message that the people of Ladakh are united in support of the four demands. We have started the fresh protest from Kargil but it will not be restricted to this district alone but will be taken to every nook and corner of Ladakh if the government does not show its willingness to continue the dialogue and address our concerns," Dorjay said. 'We are in agitation for a long time now and if the government of India calls off the talks, we have no option but to intensify the struggle," he said. Karbalai said the core group of both groups will meet later in the day to chalk out the future course of action. 'We have already decided to intensify our agitation as the government had promised to hold the next round of talks within one month after our last meeting in May. They are not showing seriousness," he said. tags : ladakh Sonam Wangchuk view comments Location : Ladakh, India, India First Published: August 11, 2025, 23:43 IST News politics Activist Sonam Wangchuk Threatens Self-Immolation Over Ladakh Statehood Demand Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
