MP Indra Hang Subba raises demand for Limboo-Tamang seat reservation in Lok Sabha

Gangtok, July 31(UNI) Bringing long-standing concerns to the national spotlight, Sikkim's Lok Sabha MP Dr Indra Hang Subba yesterday raised the critical issue of political representation for the Limboo and Tamang communities in the Sikkim Legislative Assembly.
Addressing the Lok Sabha, Dr. Subba made an earnest appeal to the Centre to fulfill the long-pending constitutional demand for seat reservations for these two Scheduled Tribe communities.
The Limboo and Tamang communities were officially recognized as Scheduled Tribes (STs) in 2003. However, even after more than two decades, they continue to be denied dedicated representation in the state assembly. This delay, according to Dr. Subba, is not only deeply unjust but also a violation of constitutional provisions designed to safeguard the political rights of marginalized communities.
Dr. Subba referred specifically to Article 371F, which provides special provisions for the State of Sikkim, and Article 332, which deals with reservation of seats for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in legislative assemblies. Despite the recognition of Limboo and Tamang as STs, the Representation of the People Act has yet to be amended to reflect the need for seat reservation. This legal inaction has left these communities politically sidelined for over 20 years.
The Sikkim MP reminded the House that the issue is not merely administrative or political—it is constitutional and moral. 'The constitutional rights of the Limboo and Tamang people must not remain on paper,' he said. 'It is the duty of the Government of India to ensure that every recognized tribe is granted equitable political participation, in letter and spirit.'
Dr. Subba also stated the urgency of the matter by highlighting the upcoming delimitation exercise, scheduled to be conducted after 2026. He called upon the Union Government to take timely action and incorporate necessary amendments in the Representation of the People Act before the delimitation process begins, so that the legitimate demands of these communities can be addressed without further delay.
The issue of Limboo and Tamang seat reservation has been a matter of public discourse and political advocacy in Sikkim for several years. Successive state governments and various tribal organizations have repeatedly urged the Centre to resolve the matter. However, no conclusive steps have been taken so far, leading to growing discontent among the two communities.

Bimal Gurung meets Suvendu in Kol

1 2 Darjeeling : In a significant move ahead of the 2026 assembly polls, GJM president Bimal Gurung on Thursday met Bengal opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari in Kolkata. Gurung was accompanied by party general secretary Roshan Giri and son Avinash Gurung. Sources suggest discussions in the closed-door meeting involved BJP 's strategy to rebuild its base in the Hills ahead of the polls. Gurung, on his part, is said to be weighing his options as he attempts to regain his political influence. Interestingly, on July 27 — observed as Martyr's Day in the Hills — Gurung had issued an ultimatum to BJP, demanding that the party fulfil its long-pending promises to the Gorkha community by Dec. "We have supported BJP since 2009, but they've given us nothing in return. With elections approaching, we cannot keep misleading our people. If BJP continues playing politics, we will be forced to explore other options," Gurung had said. GJM's journey with BJP dates back to 2009, when Gurung's support helped the saffron party gain a foothold in Darjeeling. Since then, BJP has consistently won the Darjeeling Lok Sabha seat. In 2020, Gurung dramatically exited NDA. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata

Russian FM accuses West of moving towards a ‘Fourth Reich' by calling for European militarisation

Moscow, Aug 1 (UNI) In a strong attack against Western nations and their allies, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Germany, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) are pursuing the establishment of a 'Fourth Reich' through their militarisation of Europe, reports RT. The accusation was levied in an article published today in the newspaper Rossiyskaya Gazeta, commemorating the 50th anniversary of the 1975 Helsinki Final Act on European security. Accusing the West of betraying the Helsinki Accords- signed to relax the back then strained ties between West and East Europe, emphasising equal status and security to all - he claimed that Western powers have pursued unilateral dominance, NATO expansion, and political interference in sovereign states under the guise of promoting democracy and human rights. Further alleging the Western powers of promoting Russophobia by staying silent 'on the eradication of the Russian language and culture in Ukraine' and the repression of Russian communities in Moldova and other Baltic states, Lavrov cited calls made by former Chancellor Olaf Scholz to rebuild European military superiority through conscription, and kill Russian soldiers in Ukraine if necessary, as signs of Europe's dark descent into 'Nazism'. He argued that the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) has failed in its mission and has instead become a vehicle for Western propaganda and selective enforcement. He claimed that the West ignored Moscow's calls for equitable security guarantees, and that NATO's continued encroachment on Russia's borders left Moscow no choice but to launch a military assault in Ukraine. Calling for 'honest dialogue', Lavrov said that all tensions could be resolved via a new security framework based on sovereign equality and the principles of the UN Charter. 'There will be a place for European countries within this architecture,' he wrote, 'but they certainly will not be the ones calling the tune. If they want to be part of the process, they must learn proper manners, abandon diktat and colonial instincts, and get used to equality and teamwork.' Lavrov concluded by warning that if NATO and the EU continue to hollow out the OSCE's core principles, the organisation may collapse altogether, and history will remember those who 'buried' the last chance for peaceful coexistence in Europe.
