Jamie Foxx suffered a stroke that left him unable to walk in April 2023
He returned to work in January 2024 after months of rehab
Foxx thanked his family for taking care of him in his acceptance speech at the 2025 BET AwardsJamie Foxx feels lucky to be alive after his life-threatening health emergency in April 2023.
While filming Netflix's Back in Action in Atlanta, Foxx suffered a brain bleed that led to a stroke. Things were "touch and go" for roughly 15 days; afterwards, the actor was in the hospital and rehab for months, relearning to walk and talk.
During the 2025 BET Awards, Foxx got emotional while discussing the medical crisis, recalling asking for "one more crack" at life.
"I gotta be honest — when I saw the 'in memoriam' [portion of the awards show], I was like man, that could have been me," he said. "But I don't know why I went through what I went through, but I know my second chance I'm not going turn down. I'm not going to turn down."
He continued, "Whatever reason you put this on me, I promise I'mma do right. I'mma do right in front of y'all, because I know a lot of times, when we get on we forget about where we come from."
So what happened to Jamie Foxx? Here's everything to know about the actor's medical emergency and how his health is today.
On April 11, 2023, Foxx suffered a brain bleed that caused a stroke. The first doctor the "Blame It" singer visited that day gave him a cortisone shot for a bad headache and sent him home, according to Foxx, who recalled his scary health crisis during his Netflix special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was....
His sister, Deidra Dixon, knew something more serious was going on, so she took Foxx to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. The Ray star was evaluated by a second doctor, who determined that emergency brain surgery was necessary.
"When you dream about what you want to be in life, you don't dream tragedy. But when something does go wrong, you need a sister," Foxx said to the audience.
Following the surgery, the doctor informed Dixon that her brother "may be able to make a full recovery, but it's going to be the worst year of his life."
In an eerie twist of events, Foxx had a conversation with his team about getting his affairs in order just before his stroke.
"[They asked], 'Jamie, wanna go over some papers just in case something happens?' I said, 'What's gonna happen to me?' [Then], boom! Gone," he exclusively told PEOPLE in March 2025.
Foxx lost all memory of his medical incident, claiming in his Netflix special, "I don't remember 20 days."
According to the star, things were "touch and go" for roughly 15 days. "They thought they were going to lose me because my vitals were out of control. That's when a miracle happened and that miracle was working through my youngest daughter," Foxx continued, sharing that his younger daughter, Anelise, snuck into his hospital room with her guitar.
"When she was playing my vitals went down. It was God in that guitar," he added.
Foxx woke up in early May only to discover that he was in a wheelchair unable to walk. Shortly after, he gave fans a health update on Instagram, which read: "Appreciate all the love!!! Feeling blessed."
The Stealth actor was flown to Chicago in May 2023, where he spent weeks learning how to walk again at a rehabilitation facility. During his comedy special, Foxx described himself as "irreverent" in the early days of working with his physical therapist Holly, and psychiatrist Dragana, but he eventually turned a corner.
In July 2023, a source told PEOPLE that Foxx threw a party at the rehab center to "celebrate being better."
By August of that same year, the "You Changed Me" singer finally started to feel like himself again. "It's been an unexpected dark journey ... but I can see the light," he wrote on Instagram.
Foxx returned to work less than a year after his stroke. He resumed filming Back in Action with Diaz in January 2024, and a month later, he teased his return to stand-up comedy.
"I got some jokes, and a story to tell," Foxx wrote on Instagram.
In March 2024, the actor also announced his return to Beat Shazam, which he hosts alongside his daughter Corinne. Nick Cannon and Kelly Osbourne stepped in as hosts for season 6 amid Foxx's health scare.
The Annie star didn't just get to return to work in 2024 either: He also had the honor of walking Corinne down the aisle at her wedding to Joe Hooten in October.
"It was incredibly special, considering his health scare last year," Corinne told Vogue. "There wasn't a dry eye in the house when we came down the aisle."
Foxx tearfully shared the long-awaited story about his health emergency in his Netflix comedy special Jamie Foxx: What Had Happened Was.... He told the audience that he was "angry" with God and didn't understand why something so traumatic had happened to him.
"Finally, it came to me. It's about blessings. God blessed me with his talent. He blessed me with all this money and this fame. And when I forgot about God, he blessed me with a stroke," Foxx said.
Foxx added that he never let go of his comedic background during the ordeal.
"The only thing I could hold on to was my sense of humor," Foxx told the audience. "I couldn't necessarily walk that good. I couldn't talk that good. But I didn't let go of my funny. I said, 'If I can stay funny, I can stay alive.' "
After filming the show in October 2024, Foxx spoke to CBS Mornings' Gayle King backstage and admitted that creating his special was emotionally taxing. "It was an excruciating time, to be able to open those wounds every single day for three months," he said.
On June 9, 2025, Foxx received the Ultimate Icon Award at the 2025 BET Awards. In his emotional acceptance speech, he touched on his medical crisis and paid tribute to those who saved his life.
"I have to thank my sister, Deidra. When I went through what I was going through, she shut it down. She made sure that she took care of her brother," Foxx said, before shouting out his daughter Corrine.
"I cannot say enough about you. You've always taken the backseat to everything. But when you needed to drive it, you drove. And you made sure I was here. And I ain't going to turn down," the actor continued.
Lastly, Foxx mentioned his younger daughter, Anelise.
"My baby with the big hair. She hides under that hair because she's got something special. You're so beautiful man," he said. "She snuck into my hospital room with her guitar and said, 'I know what my daddy need.' "

Netflix just added a fast-paced action thriller — and it's my favorite Gerard Butler movie

"Plane" is my favorite movie new on Netflix this week. It might even be my favorite movie coming to Netflix this month. It's definitely my favorite Gerard Butler movie — well, at least for live action. Now, I'll fully admit I have a soft spot for the Scottish actor. I've written about how "Gamer" is my favorite "bad movie," and I'll gladly hit play on "Den of Thieves," "300" or even "The Ugly Truth." I could go on and on, but honestly, if I could recommend just one Gerard Butler movie — setting aside "How to Train Your Dragon" — it'd be "Plane." This movie delivers what it promises. It's not overly convoluted and the action sequences are great, even if they're not on par with something you'd get from a "John Wick" movie. So sit down, grab some popcorn, and set the phone aside for this fast-paced 107-minute-long action thriller. Here's why "Plane" is the movie you need to be streaming right now on Netflix. In "Plane," Butler stars as commercial airline pilot Brodie Torrance. He's looking to join his daughter for some quality time, and the only thing standing in his way is completing Trailblazer Airlines Flight 119. This looks set to be an uneventful flight, with just 14 passengers heading from Hawaii to Japan. Even the addition of a fugitive being extradited by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police seems unlikely to send things into chaos. But Torrance is forced to go through a storm, during which a lightning strike fries the plane's avionics. He manages to land the plane safely — only to discover he's in the pirate-controlled Jolo Islands. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Now, Brodie, a former RAF pilot, and the fugitive Louis (Mike Colter), a former French Foreign Legionnaire, have to use their military training to keep the surviving passengers and crew alive until they can finally be rescued — or find another way off the island. In retrospect, "Plane" came at just the right time for me. Too many movies, including more than a few disappointing Marvel movies, were convoluted, filled with bad CGI and just too often ... well, boring. Not "Plane" though. This movie harkens back to the era of 2000s action movies that were slick but not campy, with just the right level of production value and a simple premise. This movie also does get one little thing right, which many action movies struggle with. Butler is the star of this movie, and he gets in some great fights during it. But he's supposed to be an aging, perhaps even washed-up, former RAF pilot. The movie leans into this, letting Butler get beat up more than once, and it's clear as you watch it that Louis, who is a former French Legionnaire (it seems likely he was involved in some special or black ops while in the service) and still in peak shape, is the better killer of the two. Which he should be, based on what we know about the characters. Many action movies would force Butler to be the one to always get the glory and come away looking the best, but "Plane" allows Butler to perform the way we'd expect his character to perform. Most importantly, though, the action in this movie is fun. There's a scene where Colter's Louis takes out some bad guys with a sledgehammer, and that's never a bad time. Don't just take my word for it, though. If you head over to Rotten Tomatoes, you'll see this has a 79% rating from critics (not bad) but a 94% rating from audience viewers. After looking through the reviews, it's clear the audience got this one right, because they view a "standard" action thriller as a good thing, not a failure to be something greater. To be clear, "standard" is pretty apt for describing "Plane," but that's exactly why it works so well. It's all killer, no filler, giving you exactly what you want from a fast-paced extraction action movie. I promise you that there are better action movies out there. But, I also promise you that you'll have a great time watching "Plane." I know I did. Stream 'Plane' now on Netflix Malcolm has been with Tom's Guide since 2022, and has been covering the latest in streaming shows and movies since 2023. He's not one to shy away from a hot take, including that "John Wick" is one of the four greatest films ever made. Here's what he's been watching lately:

Tyrese Haliburton teases dad for ‘out of pocket' fashion faux pas at NBA Finals

John Haliburton was 'out of pocket' on Wednesday, but it wasn't for an interaction with an opposing player. The father of Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton caught some flak from his son over his wardrobe choice for Game 3 of the NBA Finals, which culminated in a 116-107 win for Indiana over the Thunder. A clip circulated on social media of the younger Haliburton — who scored 22 points with 10 assists and nine rebounds — going up to his dad during pregame warmups and joking with him about the pants he had on. 'You're out of pocket for them jeans,' Tyrese said as he dapped up his dad. 'You out of pocket for them jeans.' 3 Tyrese Haliburton made fun of his dad before NBA Finals Game 3 on June 11, 2025. CJ Fogler/X John appeared to smile and patted his son on the chest as Tyrese walked back onto the court. It wasn't immediately clear what made John's wardrobe choice so egregious that his son took a playful jab at him, but the elder Haliburton seemed to be all smiles on Wednesday night as he returned to his courtside seat for the first time since he got into a confrontation with Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo in Game 5 of the first round. His seat was directly behind an ESPN cameraman behind one of the baskets. 3 Tyrese Haliburton of the Indiana Pacers reacts during the fourth quarter against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game Three of the 2025 NBA Finals at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on June 11, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Getty Images John had not attended games in person following the first round incident until Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals against the Knicks, when he sat in a suit far from the courtside view he usually had. Tyrese poked fun at the situation following that game — a 130-121 win for Indiana — when discussing his dad's return to Gainbridge Fieldhouse. 'I know people were saying, 'Free Pops' and Pops is free, but he was not in jail,' he told reporters at the time. 'He has a very beautiful home, very pretty to watch basketball. So he was just fine. I just wanted to win.' 3 John Haliburton attends Game 3 of the 2025 NBA Finals between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Kyle Terada-Imagn Images John has become a bit of a folk hero for Pacers fans, with one local TV reporter posting to social media on Wednesday that she believed she found 'John Haliburton's biggest fan, and he just so happens to be from Taiwan!' With the win, the Pacers took a 2-1 series lead in the Finals.
