Sky TV users urged to check emails now after free 'gift' apology offer

Daily Record23-05-2025

Sky users need to check their inbox as the broadcaster is sending out free gifts in an important email.
Sky is making a big apology to its customers nationwide after they were hit with frustrating issues over a week ago. Users across the UK were disrupted while watching their favourite TV shows and movies.
As a result, the TV broadcaster is sending out free gifts to its loyal customers by email. So if that's you, then go and check your inbox now.

The issue began as the firm's popular Sky Q boxes suddenly started freezing and showing error messages. While Sky was quick to fix the bug, the glitch still left many customers across the country irritated.

Some users even reported that they were still experiencing difficulties days after the initial outage, reports the Express. As Sky 'gremlins' are very rare, the company takes incidents such as these incredibly seriously.
While the firm has already sent numerous messages - even through text - apologising for the Q box outage, they are now taking an extra measure to smooth things over with their customers.
Sky has issued a new email to those affected by the Q box glitch saying that they can now grab a Sky Store Buy & Keep movie for absolutely free.
On May 16, the Sky Help Team posted on X: "We're sorry some customers had trouble accessing Sky Q last night. There was a technical issue causing some Sky Q boxes to go into a standby state.
"Our technical support teams have resolved this. If you are still having trouble accessing your Sky Q services, please switch off the box at the power socket for 30 seconds and back on again to restore service. Please also reboot your main Sky Q box if you're having trouble accessing a mini box."

Since then, Sky Q box users have been receiving emails from the provider informing them that they are being given a free film.
The message reads: "We're gifting you a Sky Store Buy & Keep movie - it's our way of saying thank you for bearing with us.

"To redeem this gift, go to your TV homepage and vist Sky Store. Click on the 'Your Sky Store gift on us' tile and choose your movie. Once downloaded, this is yours to keep forever."
The email also warned: "You'll need to make your gift selection before 31 May."
Some of the films included in the gift include Bullet Train, Jumanji: The Next Level, Les Misérables, Venom, Gladiator, Bridesmaids and The Equalizer.

However, some Sky users on X have complained that only a limited amount of films are available. One person said: "Why are the "gift" movies so limited and exclude current releases?"
Another person replied: "They are an absolute pitiful choice of movies." While another user also agreed, writing: "Absolutely woeful selection."

For people who are still experiencing issues with their Sky Q box, the firm is reminding users to give things a reboot to try and resolve the problem.
If you're still experiencing disruption to your Sky Q services, you need to try the following steps:
Switch off your Sky Q box at the mains.
Wait for 30 seconds.
Switch it back on to restore services.
Please also reboot your main Sky Q box if you're having problems with a connected Mini box.
Hopefully, this will fix things and get users back to watching all their favourite shows with ease.

Over half of Brits fume voice notes 'are turning into podcasts' - list of do's and don'ts

Voice notes are a handy way of keeping in touch but Brits are starting to dread listening to them There has been a growing trend in recent years of Gen Z individuals preferring texting and other forms of communication over phone calls. This could be down to the landline's demise and the rise of instant messaging. Many Scots find it easier to shoot off a quick text than speak to someone on the phone. The person on the other end might go off on a tangent, meaning you get roped into a conversation you don't have time for. ‌ This is where voice notes come in handy. But while voice notes - where you record yourself speaking into your phone and send as an audio message - are booming, so is voice note fatigue, as per a new study from Sky Mobile. ‌ "Voice notes began as a quick shortcut, but now they're turning into podcasts," Ben Case, Managing Director of Connectivity at Sky, said. The study revealed that more than half of Brits are getting fed up of the high volume of audio messages they receive - and the length of them. One in ten Brits say they receive over 10 voice notes a day, while 44 per cent say they listen to voice notes on double speed due to the amount of time they take up. Although three-quarters say they like to use voice notes because they are quick, expressive, and a heartfelt way to stay in touch, mobile phone users are getting annoyed by filler words, muffled voices and multiple voice notes. It has even reached the point where the average Brit is calling for the messages to be capped at two minutes. ‌ What's more, more than one in ten admit they'd call for the talking message to be banned altogether. A further 14 per cent dreading listening to them, and a third confessing sending voice notes is a dating turn-off. ‌ The main gripes? Not getting to the point quick enough, stop-and-start messages, and voice notes longer than five minutes. Voice notes can be a great way to communicate, but not everyone gets it right. ‌ To avoid getting wound up by your pal's lengthy spiel, Sky Mobile has pulled together a do's and don'ts guide to voice messaging. Do: Keep it brief. Aim for a maximum of two minutes and remember people don't have time for a podcast. Be clear and to the point. Rambling and filler worlds are major turn-offs. Get to the point quickly. Speak clearly. Muffled audio and monotone delivery make it hard to engage with your message. Be mindful of background noise. Nobody wants to hear your dog barking or the train announcements. Don't: Send endless voice note chains. Multiple short messages create notification overload and can be frustrating. Overuse voice notes. While convenient, sometimes a quick text is all you need. Send overly long voice notes. Anything over five minutes is pushing it. Monologue message. Acknowledge the recipient and engage in a two-way conversation. Be afraid to switch it up. Sometimes a phone call is the best way to connect. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! The 7 TV channels disappearing from all Virgin Media boxes in June as major station shuts down after 10 years

MILLIONS of Virgin TV customers are set to see big changes this week as seven TV channels are going to disappear forever – including one much loved reality station. The major shake-up could see users lose access to their favourite channels – including reality station ITVBe – in a behind the scenes revamp recently revealed by a Sky employee. From Friday, Virgin TV users will notice several channels have disappeared. Similar changes will affect Sky TV customers. There's no need to panic, with most stations being rebranded, not removed entirely. 2 What TV channels are changing? On Friday 6 June, Sky Romance will be replaced by SuperheroHD, although this name is set to be temporary. A day later (Saturday June 7) Sky Comedy HD will wave farewell and be replaced by PitchPerfectHD. These changes come after several other Sky channels were renamed on June 2. Sky Fairytale became Sky Family on Monday June 2, returning to its original name. Sky Karate Kid also got the chop, reverting back to Sky Action. Sky Pride will become Sky Drama HD. That's Dance is the new name for the popular That's Pride channel. The biggest shake up to schedules is the closure of ITVBe. What will happen to ITVBe? In a blow to reality TV lovers, ITV bosses confirmed to The Sun in April that ITVBe was being shut down. The switch off will take place on Friday after 11 years. There's good news, too. Favourite shows like The Only Way Is Essex and the Real Housewives moving to ITV2, to join Love Island 2025. The station will be replaced by a dedicated channel ITV Quiz. The new station will be the new home for Deal or No Deal, Wheel of Fortune, Tipping Point, Lingo, Tenable, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? 2 Why are the channels being closed? The ITVBe switch off is all part of massive cost-cutting at ITV as bosses try to balance the books. Despite having huge hits like Love Island 2025, the broadcaster is struggling to compete with streaming services. The closure of ITVBe comes after the bombshell news that Lorraine Kelly's morning show would be cut to just 30 minutes. There are also dramatic changes to long-running lunchtime show Loose Women. ITV fans will need to stay tuned to see if there are any more changes to channels and programmes.

Outlander star unrecognisable in chart-topping Scottish Netflix series

Netflix's brand new crime drama has proven to be a hit, and Outlander fans might remember one of its stars. Outlander enthusiasts may have noticed a familiar face in Netflix's latest series, Department Q. The crime drama has quickly become popular with Netflix viewers, swiftly rising to the top of the UK chart. Penned and directed by The Queen's Gambit creator Scott Frank, Department Q features Matthew Goode in the lead role as DCI Carl Morck, a bold yet brilliant detective heading up a new cold-case unit in Edinburgh. ‌ The programme is based on Afdeling Q, a collection of ten Danish Nordic noir crime novels penned by author Jussi Adler-Olsen. Department Q boasts a star-studded cast, including Kelly Macdonald, Mark Bonnar and Chloe Pirrie. ‌ Alec Newman also joins the cast as Paul Evans, introduced as an enthusiastic climber, reports the Express. Although he appears unrecognisable in his latest role, Outlander fans might recall him as Joseph Wemyss from the Starz romance drama. Joseph is the father of Lizzie Wemyss, portrayed by Caitlin O'Ryan. Get Netflix free with Sky from £15 Sky Get the deal here Product Description Alec's other roles include Edward Crowther in Protection, Niven Guthrie in Shetland and Michael Byrne in Waterloo Road. Meanwhile, viewers are likely to recognise leading actor Matthew Goode from his previous roles in shows such as Downton Abbey, The Crown and A Discovery of Witches. Renowned actress Kate Dickie, known for her role as Lysa Arryn in the HBO series Game of Thrones, also makes an appearance. ‌ Alexej Manvelov, who plays Akram in the show, expressed his excitement about working alongside such a talented cast. "It was just amazing," he told Reach in an exclusive interview. "I'm from Sweden and there's a bit of a different style in Sweden where we're a bit more process-oriented. ‌ "But just to come in and work on this high of a level of craft of acting. It was amazing and the ensemble is just... "I mean I've been a fan of Kate Dickie's for ages, since Red Road," he admitted, referring to his co-star who plays DCS Moira. "So just to have a scene with her, I was like 'Oh my god'." ‌ The official Netflix synopsis for Department Q reads: "DCI Carl Morck is a brilliant cop but a terrible colleague. His razor-sharp sarcasm has made him no friends in Edinburgh Police. "After a shooting that leaves a young PC dead, and his partner paralysed, he finds himself exiled to the basement and the sole member of Dept. Q; a newly formed cold case unit. ‌ "The department is a PR stunt, there to distract the public from the failures of an under-resourced, failing police force that is glad to see the back of him. "But more by accident than design, Carl starts to build a gang of waifs and strays who have everything to prove. "So, when the stone-cold trail of a prominent civil servant who disappeared several years ago starts to heat up, Carl is back doing what he does best - rattling cages and refusing to take no for an answer." All episodes of Department Q are available to stream now, exclusively on Netflix.
